“We had a ring designed already, and our mock-up looked so shitty that Michelle was like, ‘That cannot be the ring I wear,’” the movie’s director, Jon M. Chu, told Vulture about the original piece of jewelry. “I’m like, ‘I know, I know. I’m so embarrassed by it, but we don’t have the money.’ She’s like, ‘I have a better ring than that.‘” … [Read more...] about Michelle Yeoh Wears the Massive Emerald Engagement Ring from
“The ring in the movie, it belonged to me, yes,” Yeoh tells The Knot. “It was very important for it to be real. And Eleanor was a character who knew what she wore had to be flawless. Her [own] mother-in-law did not approve and did not give her the family ring at the end of the day… so that ring had to be very special.” … [Read more...] about The Engagement Ring in
Shootings in predominantly white schools repeatedly receive an outpouring of support, such as donations to pay for funerals and the almost immediate provision of trauma-based services. Yet the regular shootings in urban communities get little help or attention, in large part because many Americans view urban violence as normal and someone else’s problem. According to a report by AmericanViolence.org, despite an overall decline in violence in the United States, homicide rates in many urban areas remain above 20 per 100,000, a level typically associated with war-torn nations. Thus, every day, somewhere in our country, a young person, usually black or Latino, is experiencing the terror of violence in their community. … [Read more...] about Gun violence in urban communities must get the same attention as suburban school shootings
National Broadcaster Doordarshan, in its bid to keep people engaged while they are indoors following the 21-day lockdown, has introduced reruns of its popular shows of the bygone era. Joining the rerun schedule today is Chanakya, a 47-part epic drama written and directed by Dr. Chandraprakash Dwivedi, originally telecast between 1991 and 1992. Dwivedi had produced the fictionalised account of the life and times of the 4th century BCE Indian economist, strategist and political theorist Chanakya, also known as Vishnugupta. Dr Dwivedi also played Chanakya in the show. However, few would know that the show was rejected by the broadcaster when it was first pitched to them. Recalling the time, Dr Dwivedi told us, “I had pitched it sometime in the mid-1980s. The response I got from them was that the show didn’t fit the channel’s scheme of work but they had liked my skill as a writer. It baffled me because they had historical shows like Tipu Sultan but did not feel that a … [Read more...] about What! Chanakya was rejected by Doordarshan!

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh reported its first two casualties due to Covid-19 on Wednesday – a 25-year-old man from Basti and a 72-year-old man from Meerut. Worryingly, the 25-year-old from Basti was detected positive for the contagion after his death, setting off a hunt to trace all people who came in contact with him. With the youth having no recent travel history, the authorities were trying to establish how he contracted the infection. While principal health secretary Amit Mohan Prasad ruled out the possibility of community transmission, the district magistrate of Basti, Ashutosh Niranjan, said the immunity of the youth was severely compromised owing to a prolonged history of asthma for the past 10-12 years. The administration traced and isolated 15 people in Basti and in Gorakhpur, where the youth was brought for treatment in the city's BRD Hospital on Sunday. The 15 included six doctors and paramedics who had come in contact with him, said district magistrate of Gorakhpur, … [Read more...] about Uttar Pradesh reports its first two casualties due to Covid-19

Cities of all sizes there have been actively recruiting legal immigrants to combat population decline and replenish their workforce. In an important study for the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, public policy consultant Rob Paral found that the native-born working age population declined from 2000-2010 in dozens of Rustbelt cities––from Detroit, St. Louis and Kansas City to Akron and Sheboygan––as families left for faster-growing regions. Those places all mitigated that crippling contraction by increasing their population of working-age foreign-born adults. Cotton and Perdue, of course, do not represent such areas. And that realization leads to the ugly underlying motive for restrictions on immigration, past, present, and future: It’s about stopping demographic change on behalf of people who see the mythological America of their youth slipping away. … [Read more...] about Here Comes the GOP Attack on Legal Immigration
