It was an image that broke hearts as it was televised to the world: Dressed all in black, her head bowed, Queen Elizabeth II sat isolated and alone inside the chapel of St George's as the royal family gathered under stringent coronavirus restrictions to say goodbye to Philip, Duke of Edinburgh . After 73 years of marriage and a loving union that saw her husband often by her side or two steps behind, the British monarch cut a lonely figure as the coffin entered the venue. To many she appeared vulnerable – perhaps for the first time in her long reign – that has frequently seen her hailed as a pillar of strength in the country throughout myriad crises and periods of darkness. On social media, many said that they were heartbroken and deeply saddened at scenes of the monarch sitting by herself during the funeral, while others said the images were a nod to her strength of character – as a woman, wife and queen. The image of a family forced to gather as a small group to say goodbye to … [Read more...] about Image of Queen Elizabeth II sitting alone at Prince Philip’s funeral breaks hearts around the world

Prince Charles will be ‘quasi-king’ but Queen will not abdicate, claims expert
Prince Charles is set to become a "quasi-king" but the Queen will "never abdicate", a royal expert has claimed. Biographer Robert Jobson said the next in line to the throne will takeover as patriarch of the family following the death of his father Prince Philip . He will also do state visits on behalf of his mum, who turns 95 in a matter of days - but there is "no doubt" she will continue as monarch until her death, he added. Speaking to Omid Scobie on ABC's podcast The Heir Pod, Mr Jobson went on to say there is "scope for change", and that the 72-year-old prince could essentially become king in all but name. "The Prince of Wales will step up, in a way he’s already been doing that for the past five years, but now he truly is the patriarch of the family because the Duke of Edinburgh is dead," the author of Prince Philip's Century said. Royal correspondent Scobie said Charles is "almost between roles now". Do you enjoy reading about the royal family? Line of Duty episode 5: Is Kate dead, and how exactly is Jo related to Tommy Hunter?
No sooner had Line of Duty fans vaguely recovered from last week’s DNA cliffhanger, than the BBC1 crime thriller dropped its most nerve-shredding ending yet. After an extremely tense face-off between DI Kate Fleming (Vicky McClure) and corrupt cop PC Ryan Pilkington (Gregory Piper), with both screaming at each other to drop their gun, two gunshots were fired. But who shot first? And if that wasn’t enough to worry about, DCS Patricia Carmichael (Anna Maxwell Martin) swanned back into AC-12 to take control. It was revealed that DCI Jo Davidson (Kelly Macdonald) is related to crime lord Tommy Hunter. Suspicion was reignited over our favourite TV gaffer Supt Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar). And James Nesbitt popped up as the new suspect on the block. Mother of God, it’s a wonder the nation has any nails left... With fans still reeling, we ask the burning questions... Has Kate survived? In dramatic final scenes of the episode, Kate realised she’d been played by … [Read more...] about Line of Duty episode 5: Is Kate dead, and how exactly is Jo related to Tommy Hunter?
Martha MacCallum: Goodnight, sweet and salty prince
close Video Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and Queen Elizabeth II's husband, dead at 99 Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and Queen Elizabeth II’s husband of 73 years, died at Windsor Castle; Greg Palkot reports. Like Princess Diana alone on the bench at the Taj Mahal, the enduring image from Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral, is dignified Queen Elizabeth alone in St. George’s Chapel; at times, far bent over in prayer in her pew, her large black hat pitched forward like a shield. At 94, the Queen now stands alone. Those who shared her life experience, father, mother, sister and now husband, all gone. No one left to call her by her first name. Her hand written note on the flowers to her husband appears to be signed, "Lilibet." FILE - In this Wednesday Aug. 2, 2017 file photo, Britain's Prince Philip, in his role as Captain General of the Royal Marines, attends a Parade on the forecourt of Buckingham Palace, in central … [Read more...] about Martha MacCallum: Goodnight, sweet and salty prince
Countdown: The 165 Greatest American Movies Ever Made (165-141)
Lists are subjective and almost always widely criticized, argued, and debated — which is the whole point. This is especially true for movie lists. Nevertheless, the top 100 movie list released by the BBC back in 2015 is one of the most derided in recent memory. The BBC polled 62 international film critics and asked them to choose the 100 greatest American films of all time. About half the list is little different from the one compiled and updated by the American Film Institute every decade. The other half is full of surprises. There is no right or wrong answer to listing your favorite films. It is all subjective. Regardless, it is still a shock to see 62 film critics choose a bunch of films everyone has written off as, at best, marginal: Spike Lee’s forgettable 25th Hour (2002) at #94; Michael Cimino’s infamous 1980 debacle Heaven’s Gate at #98; Hitchcock’s swing-and-a-miss Marnie at #47, etc. You can see the full list here . The BBC’s surprising omissions, however, … [Read more...] about Countdown: The 165 Greatest American Movies Ever Made (165-141)
Global death toll passes 3M
The global Covid-19 death toll passed three million on Saturday as the pandemic speeds up despite vaccination campaigns, leading countries like India to impose new lockdowns to fight spiraling infection numbers. It is the latest grim milestone since the novel coronavirus first surfaced in central China in December 2019 and went on to infect more than 139 million people, leaving billions more under crippling lockdowns and ravaging the global economy. An average of more than 12,000 deaths were recorded globally every day in the past week, shooting the overall toll past three million on Saturday, according to a tally of Agence France-Presse (AFP). For comparison, three million people is more than the population of Jamaica or Armenia — and three times the death toll of the Iran-Iraq war, which raged from 1980-1988. The pandemic is showing no sign of slowing down: the 829,596 new infections reported worldwide on Friday was the highest number yet, according to AFP’s tally. BEL MOONEY: As with so many of us, Covid made this a profoundly intimate ceremony
How fitting it was that the mourners who walked behind the splendid Land Rover hearse did not wear uniforms. Whatever painful juggling of competing vanities our Queen had to undertake (at a time when she should have been spared), and no matter how miffed her third son and grandson might have felt — the absence of gold braid and epaulettes was surely a blessing. Because black is the colour of grief — and sombre funeral clothes made those mourners look so much more normal. That may seem a strange thing to say, when so much magnificent military pomp and ceremony surrounded them and when, after all, this was a moving State occasion. Yet we must never forget the Royal Family is exactly that — a family. And dressed in black and obeying the rules on Covid funerals to the letter, they prompted thoughts of all the countless other families who, in the long, hard pandemic months, have endured and had to bid farewell to their loved ones in small ceremonies. In many cases, it added to the … [Read more...] about BEL MOONEY: As with so many of us, Covid made this a profoundly intimate ceremony
