George Floyd: US House of Representatives approves police reform bill banning chokeholds
A police reform bill in honour of George Floyd that will ban chokeholds and "qualified immunity" for law enforcement officials has been passed by the US House of Representatives. The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act would also ban no-knock warrants, mandate data collection on police encounters, prohibit racial and religious profiling and redirect funding to community-based policing programs. The 220-212 vote comes nine months after Mr Floyd , a black man, died when a police officer in Minneapolis pressed a knee on his neck for several minutes. As he died, Mr Floyd was repeatedly heard to say: "I can't breathe." His death in May 2020 prompted massive protests across the US and around the world calling for an end to racial injustice and police brutality. EAGLE-EYED fans are convinced Hollywood actor Jason Sudeikis is living with former Page 3 girl Keeley Hazell. The pair have set tongues wagging after appearing to be caught on camera in the same house. Immigration reform a tough task for Biden
US President Joe Biden's efforts to reverse his predecessor Donald Trump's hard-line, regressive policies, including his attempt to reform the US immigration system, encountered bumps in the very first week of his presidency. On Jan 26, a federal judge in Texas temporarily blocked Biden's 100-day deportation moratorium. However, days later Biden unveiled hefty immigration reforms-formally named the US Citizenship Act of 2021-which would include providing an eight-year path to citizenship for more than 11 million undocumented immigrants if it becomes law. The act will also preserve and strengthen the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program introduced by former president Barack Obama in 2012 to allow individuals with unlawful presence in the US after being brought to the country as children to receive a renewable two-year period of deferred action from deportation and become eligible for a work permit. On Feb 18, Biden and congressional Democrats submitted the citizenship … [Read more...] about Immigration reform a tough task for Biden
Biden has to act to save Iran deal: China Daily editorial
It is certainly a pity that Teheran rejected the European Union's proposal of an informal meeting with the other five parties to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, with the United States to attend as a guest. The earlier Teheran and Washington re-engage directly under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the better. Neither party can afford leaving a security concern of such immensity and damaging potential unattended indefinitely. Although it would be unrealistic to expect the knot of complexities to be untied overnight, given the fact that neither Teheran nor Washington has shown any intention to slam the door shut to further engagement, it is more advisable to take Iran's statement as an invitation for the US to act. Or the prelude to a new, perhaps protracted, diplomatic process. It is not that Teheran doesn't want to meet. Now is "appropriate" for such a meeting, Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman said. The Iranian official also talked about a return to the commitments of the … [Read more...] about Biden has to act to save Iran deal: China Daily editorial
Delta to spend US$30 million to neutralize most of its 2020 climate impact
REUTERS: Delta Air Lines said on Thursday it would spend more than US$30 million to offset 13 million metric tons of carbon emissions over 10 months last year as part of its pledge to help combat climate change. Delta said it had also cut emissions by retiring more than 200 older aircraft early in 2020 as it dealt with a plunge in demand from the coronavirus pandemic. Replacement planes will be 25per cent more fuel efficient, the U.S. airline said. Delta in February 2020 announced plans to invest US$1 billion over the next decade in initiatives like offsets, sustainable aviation fuel and carbon sequestration that would limit the impact of global air travel on the environment, the first airline to make a commitment of that scale. That followed moves in Europe by easyJet to offset emissions on all flights and British Airways and Air France on domestic flights. The amount Delta plans to pay for offsets from March 1 to Dec. 31 would equate to less than 0.35per cent of its … [Read more...] about Delta to spend US$30 million to neutralize most of its 2020 climate impact
Trump says he tells the truth – at least he tries
WASHINGTON: Can all those people accusing President Donald Trump of lying cut him some slack? He really is trying to tell the truth, he says. "I try, I do try," he told ABC television late Wednesday (Oct 31). "I always want to tell the truth. When I can, I tell the truth. And sometimes it turns out to be where something happens that's different or there's a change, but I always like to be truthful," Trump said. The Republican is famous for going off script during frequent impromptu press gatherings at the White House and at campaign rallies in the final run-up to next Tuesday's midterm congressional elections. A billionaire former real estate magnate and reality TV host, Trump keeps even his own aides on their toes with surprise announcements and headline-grabbing declarations. On frequent occasions, Trump also makes statements that are clearly exaggerations, plain wrong or at minimum unaccompanied by evidence. These include his recent claim that "unknown Middle … [Read more...] about Trump says he tells the truth – at least he tries
