A PAIR of childhood sweethearts have rekindled their relationship after bumping into each other in a bar in Benidorm after 34 years apart. Gaynor Williams, now 50, was just 16 when she met 19-year-old Dean Ryan, now 53, at Memories bar in Chester, Cheshire, in 1986. The pair became a couple and dated for 18 months before they split in 1987 when Dean moved to Pontins, in Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset, to become a performer. But 34 years later, in August 2019, they fell in love all over again after a chance meeting in a bar in Benidorm - where Dean lived and Gaynor was on holiday - and they have now started a new life together in Spain. Gaynor had just split up from her partner of 15 years and moved out of their shared home in Dunham Hill, Cornwall, when she took a week-long solo trip to Benidorm, Spain, in August 2019 to do some soul searching. The mum-of-one couldn't believe it when she saw her former childhood sweetheart, Dean, working as a singer in the Rock and Roll house … [Read more...] about Childhood sweethearts rekindle relationship after bumping into each other in Benidorm 34 years later

Int’l Critics Line: Todd McCarthy On ‘Language Lessons’ – Berlin
Whether by accident or design, the ultra-low-budget Language Lessons feels like a definitive film for the Covid-19 era, as the two main actors never appear in the same shot together until the very end. Seemingly created on two computers, this exceedingly modest tale of a Spanish-language instructor and pupil who meet online becomes more genially engaging as it goes along, although it never aims very high other than as a technical experiment that more or less succeeds. It plays just fine on home equipment and it’s hard to imagine that there would be anything to be gained from experiencing this Berlinale Special world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival on the big screen. The script by indie stalwart Mark Duplass and director-actress Natalie Morales is entirely restricted to the chats the two characters, Adam and Cariño, have in the course of online language lessons bought for the former by his partner — 100 of them, no less. Adam and his mate Will are … [Read more...] about Int’l Critics Line: Todd McCarthy On ‘Language Lessons’ – Berlin

Berlin Review: ‘Ted K’ Delves Into World Of The Unabomber
Director Tony Stone delves into the world of “Unabomber” Ted Kaczynski in Ted K , premiering in the Panorama strand of the Berlin Film Festival . More of a mood piece than a biopic, it stars an understated Sharlto Copley as the former math professor, who’s living off grid in the Montana mountains, fostering a burgeoning grudge against technology. We drop in on him over the decades as he gathers materials to experiment with bombs, targeting people he believes are harming the environment. We watch him write coded rants against industrialization, and about the invasive noise of airplanes. Sound is key to communicating Ted’s point of view. In the wilderness, we hear the ripple of a stream, the crackle of a fire, the clank of his spoon on a tin — he is alone and uninterrupted. When an airplane flies over, he’s visibly distressed. When he takes a trip into the city, the voiceover (based on his writings) becomes almost inaudible under the noise of traffic. Classical music seems to … [Read more...] about Berlin Review: ‘Ted K’ Delves Into World Of The Unabomber

‘Incredible’ findings prove existence of space plasma hurricanes
Scientists say they have confirmed the existence of space hurricanes, with a 600 mile-wide mass spotted above the North Pole. Researchers led by China's Shandong University used satellite data to identify the space hurricane, finding it was not a whirling pattern of air but of plasma - ionised gas. The mass was raining electrons instead of water and it lasted nearly eight hours before it broke down. Professor Mike Lockwood, space scientist at the University of Reading, said the hurricanes could be a universal phenomena at planets and moons with magnetic fields and plasma. He said: "Until now, it was uncertain that space plasma hurricanes even existed, so to prove this with such a striking observation is incredible. Advertisement "Tropical storms are associated with huge amounts of energy, and these space hurricanes must be created by unusually large and rapid transfer of solar wind energy and charged particles into the Earth's upper atmosphere. … [Read more...] about ‘Incredible’ findings prove existence of space plasma hurricanes
