PHUKET: The Islanders fell back into into the five-team relegation zone following a 1-0 loss last night to 3rd place Sri Racha Suzuki FC. Despite a wide margin in league points, the competition, played in front of 3,100 fans, was evenly matched with the Sri Racha “Blue Marlins” enjoying only slightly more possession than Phuket. Indeed, it was looking as if Phuket FC – reinforced with the leadership of a capable new head coach, Anuruck “June” Srikerd as of Wednesday – were going to earn at least a point last night. The crowd were on their feet on a number of occasions with near-scoring chances enjoyed early on by Phuket’s Narakorn Wisetthanakarn and Koreans Boash Chun and Seongwon Byeon. However, Sri Racha’s Thai keeper Chanin Sae-ie coordinated well with his Brazilian backs, team captain, Douglas Cobo and Diego Mendes, who greatly limited Phuket’s attacking game. For much of the game, Phuket’s midfielders Niran Panthong and Roland Vargos stepped up their game to reinforce … [Read more...] about Phuket Sports: Marlins reel in the Islanders

New Banyan Tree Phuket hotel manager “at home’
PHUKET: Hery Kuswoyo has taken the helm as the hotel manager for Banyan Tree Phuket, the Banyan Tree group’s flagship property. Mr Kuswoyo joined the Banyan Tree family in 2010 as the Food and Beverage Executive Assistant Manager for Banyan Tree Bangkok. Prior to joining the Phuket team, he was the executive assistant manager for Banyan Tree Macau – the group’s first urban resort. Mr Kuswoyo has extensive experience in various management roles at luxury hotels, including the Hyatt, JW Marriott, Four Seasons and The Ritz Carlton. However, the moving from place to place has taken its toll and he’s ready to call Phuket ‘home’. “When we arrived in Phuket, it was like returning to Bali. There was the beautiful weather, white-sand beaches, landscape, food and especially the people!” Mr Kuswoyo said. “The respect, kindness and sincerity they have on a daily basis makes our job fun and easy. We simply don’t feel like strangers in Phuket! We’re home!” Mr Kuswoyo also noted that the … [Read more...] about New Banyan Tree Phuket hotel manager “at home’

Go north to Mai Khao and the Sarasin Bridge
PHUKET: The Mai Khao region in Phuket’s northwest has long been home to breeding Andaman sea turtles, not to mention an abundance of other species of flora and fauna, although Homo Touristicus remained noticeable by their absence until quite recently. Nowadays, that’s all changed, as a gathering influx of both tourists and residents flood this formerly quiet corner. The opportunities for quiet, traffic-free cycling in beguiling surroundings, it seems, are certainly still a major draw for Phuket’s lycra louts. Peace and quiet are becoming rare on Phuket and are now found only in a few places, of which Mai Khao is definitely one. Here, there’s still a vision of a tropical island as it used to be. The sand stretches for miles, palms sway in the breeze and the sea is begging for you to swim, although seasonal rip tides need to be carefully researched prior to jumping in. There are a few big-name Mai Khao resorts now, but on the whole the area has yet to be overtaken by development. … [Read more...] about Go north to Mai Khao and the Sarasin Bridge
