10 years after quake, New Zealand’s Christ Church Cathedral finally rising

CHRISTCHURCH: The Christ Church Cathedral was arguably New Zealand's most iconic building before much of it crumbled in an earthquake 10 years ago. The years of debate that followed over whether the ruins should be rebuilt or demolished came to symbolize the paralysis that has sometimes afflicted the broader rebuild of Christchurch. As the city on Monday marks one decade since the quake struck, killing 185 people and upending countless more lives, there are finally signs of progress on the cathedral. It's being rebuilt to look much like the original that was finished in 1904, only with modern-day improvements to make it warmer and safer, even to add extra much-needed bathrooms. But first, workers must stabilize the remains. Peter Carrell, the Anglican bishop of Christchurch, said reopening it will represent a key milestone. “I think it will be hugely significant because it will be one of the final pieces in the jigsaw of putting Christchurch back together," Carrell said. … [Read more...] about 10 years after quake, New Zealand’s Christ Church Cathedral finally rising

Renault Espace F1 Revival Rendering Says No To Boring Minivans

The V10 family hauler is back... in Photoshop. Renault took the 1994 Paris Motor Show by storm with the unveiling of what is arguably the most ludicrous minivan ever built. We’re using “ludicrous” in the most positive way possible as the one-off Espace F1 had a lot going for it. Built to celebrate the minivan’s tenth anniversary, the impressive build was co-developed with Matra as a mid-engined family hauler with a V10 taken from a Formula 1 car. The spirit of the Espace F1 is alive and well some 27 years later as a talented artist has resurrected the rear-wheel-drive minivan with its 3.5-liter engine producing up to 820 horsepower. If you recall, the original concept had the powertrain sourced from the 1993 Williams-Renault FW15C Formula 1 car and used a carbon fiber body to keep weight down to a low 2,866 pounds (1,300 kilograms). The adjacent rendering is based on the latest Espace, an endangered model in Renault’s lineup as the minivan could bite the dust as … [Read more...] about Renault Espace F1 Revival Rendering Says No To Boring Minivans

Will British Airways’ new business class seats restore its luxury credentials?

When, in 1999, British Airways (BA) showed me the mock-ups of its new flatbed business class seats, the idea was considered so high-class that my write-up appeared in How To Spend It magazine (my first and only appearance in the FT’s style bible). BA had other ideas that seemed wildly futuristic back then. It was going to provide personalised jet-lag advice to its high-paying customers. They would tap their details into a palm-held computer that would give them a sleeping, diet and exercise programme in the days leading up to their flights. The airline was even trying out electronic books. “It’s a novel-book size with a screen,” a BA tech guru told me. Imagine. What was once innovative becomes ordinary very quickly, and BA’s previously pioneering offerings have been looking tired for a while. Many other airlines’ business class sections have for years outclassed BA’s. Particular scorn has been directed at BA’s one forward-facing, one backward-facing seat-pairs which, crammed … [Read more...] about Will British Airways’ new business class seats restore its luxury credentials?

Joe Biden sworn in as 46th President of the United States

WASHINGTON: Democrat Joe Biden was on Wednesday (Jan 20) sworn in as the 46th President of the United States. With his hand on a five-inch thick heirloom Bible that has been in his family for more than a century, Biden took the oath of office administered by US Chief Justice John Roberts that binds the president to "preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States". Biden, 78, became the oldest US president in history at a scaled-back ceremony in Washington that was largely stripped of its usual pomp and circumstance, due both to the coronavirus and security concerns following the Jan 6 assault on the US Capitol by supporters of outgoing President Donald Trump . READ: 'Democracy has prevailed': Biden in first speech as US president The norm-defying Trump flouted one last convention on his way out of the White House when he refused to meet with Biden or attend his successor's inauguration, breaking with a political tradition seen as affirming the … [Read more...] about Joe Biden sworn in as 46th President of the United States

The changes for better or worse after 45 years as a doctor

Medical treatments and care have improved greatly since the 1970s, but a retiring Nelson GP says while there’s been leaps and bounds in his 45 years of service, there’s one thing he’s hoping to resurrect in his retirement. When Dr Rob Riley first became a doctor in 1973, technology for treating patients was in its infancy. Riley said asthma inhalers were only just rolling out, CT scans didn’t exist to quickly diagnose strokes and brain tumours, colonoscopies weren’t around to allow early detection of bowel cancer and the treatment for heart attacks was just medication where “survival was not often great”. But while the improvements had been huge, he said, the support for doctors had been sacrificed and “GP burnout” was “a real threat to the world of medical care”. When Riley was a young doctor, he was a part of a global GP support initiative, the Balint Group, he said. “I was lucky that for 30 years I was involved in a GP support group. We used to meet every week to share … [Read more...] about The changes for better or worse after 45 years as a doctor

2/26: How Two Llamas And A Dress Gave Us The Internet’s Greatest Day

February 26, 2015, was hardly one minute old when the day’s first big news broke. At 12:01 a.m., Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser allowed the city’s marijuana legalization law to take effect. Plenty more news would follow. As the East Coast braved its morning commute, the Palm Beach Post reported news of a man who checked into a local hospital complaining of a headache, before doctors found a bullet lodged in his head. The New York Times reported news of “3 Brooklyn Men Accused of Plot to Aid ISIS’ Fight.” British intelligence officials identified the notorious ISIS executioner Jihadi John. A paper in Nature discovered evidence of a “ Supermassive Black Hole Dating to Cosmic Dawn .” The Federal Communications Commission was scheduled to vote on net neutrality, prompting the editors of Tech Policy Daily to ask, “ Will February 26, 2015 Mark the Death of Internet Freedom? ” And late-evening reports that billionaire Donald J. Trump was “more serious than ever … [Read more...] about 2/26: How Two Llamas And A Dress Gave Us The Internet’s Greatest Day

Singapore is paying ‘close attention’ to welfare of foreign workers amid COVID-19 outbreak: PM Lee

SINGAPORE: Singapore will do its best to take care of the needs of foreign workers here amid the COVID-19 outbreak, said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Friday (Apr 10). The number of COVID-19 cases in foreign worker dormitories has surged in recent days, with clusters emerging in nine dormitories so far.
