But while the group’s perennial earworms have soundtracked weddings, bar and bat mitzvahs, and other life events for decades, their boisterous, exuberant live shows often get forgotten. In 1982, they appeared on West German show Musikladen for a wild 45-minute set spanning 1979’s Ladies’ Night (“Too Hot,” “Ladies’ Night”) through 1982’s then-recent As One (“Big Fun,” “Let’s Go Dancing”). … [Read more...] about Flashback: Kool & the Gang Dance, Flip, and Electrify in Wild 1982 Live Set
When I started DJing, there’s not a Kool & the Gang record from that early era that I didn’t play at some point. Of course I would play “Hollywood Swinging” — that’s one of the greatest dance tunes of all time. People talk about “Celebration” being one of the biggest wedding tunes, and it kind of is, but “Hollywood Swinging,” you hear that horn-line, and it’s, “everybody get to the dance floor right now.” It’s opened some of the biggest party records of all time as well: Mase with Puffy, “Feel So Good,” DJ Kool’s “Let Me Clear My Throat.” Even if you think about the horn lines in “Jungle Boogie” [starts singing], they’re really minimal, but they do so much. And then obviously “Too Hot” was a big R&B record, so you could definitely play that later on in the DJ sets as an R&B classic. The more commercial stuff was more like you would … [Read more...] about Mark Ronson Talks Kool & the Gang’s Massive Influence and Legacy
Frederick “Toots” Hibbert, who died Friday at age 77, wasn’t just a pioneer and key popularizer of Jamaican music; he was also an essential bridge between the worlds of ska, rocksteady, reggae, and the great American R&B tradition. His vocal delivery, raspy yet gorgeously supple, and poignant way of writing — “I realized it’s like you’re writing a letter to a girl; it’s got to sound like you mean it!” he told Rolling Stone recently of his craft — placed him firmly in the tradition of legends like Ray Charles and Sam Cooke, and contemporaries like Otis Redding. “As a singer, he’s amazing,” friend and collaborator Keith Richards told RS recently of Hibbert. Here are 15 songs that chart Hibbert’s remarkable six-decade journey with his signature group, the Maytals, and beyond. … [Read more...] about Toots and the Maytals: 15 Essential Songs

While SBTB takes place in Bayside High School, California, the Miss Bliss season — which was actually created as a completely different show — takes place in John F. Kennedy Junior High in Indianapolis, Indiana. What happened: Welcome to Good Morning, Miss Bliss, the 1988, 13-episode Disney Channel show that preceded the series you know and love. THE SHOWSTOPPER: Some said this gown reminded them of Big Bird, or Spongebob, or melted cheese. Don't listen to any of them, I say. The Met Gala is not an occasion for tasteful LBDs – it's about big, bold show-stopping looks that may be divisive at the time, but will go down in fashion lore as iconic. Rihanna smashed this one out of the park - and got bonus points for being one of the few attendees at that year's event, where the theme was "China: Through the Looking Glass", to actually wear a Chinese designer. … [Read more...] about Best & worst dressed celebrities: The dresses that went viral
