Countdown: The 165 Greatest American Movies Ever Made (165-141)

Lists are subjective and almost always widely criticized, argued, and debated — which is the whole point. This is especially true for movie lists. Nevertheless, the top 100 movie list released by the BBC back in 2015 is one of the most derided in recent memory. The BBC polled 62 international film critics and asked them to choose the 100 greatest American films of all time. About half the list is little different from the one compiled and updated by the American Film Institute every decade. The other half is full of surprises. There is no right or wrong answer to listing your favorite films. It is all subjective. Regardless, it is still a shock to see 62 film critics choose a bunch of films everyone has written off as, at best, marginal: Spike Lee’s forgettable 25th Hour (2002) at #94; Michael Cimino’s infamous 1980 debacle Heaven’s Gate at #98; Hitchcock’s swing-and-a-miss Marnie at #47, etc. You can see the full list here . The BBC’s surprising omissions, however, … [Read more...] about Countdown: The 165 Greatest American Movies Ever Made (165-141)

Farage: ‘Desperately Sad’ to See Queen Alone at Funeral Due to ‘Inhuman’ Covid Rules

Brexit leader Nigel Farage has slammed the “inhuman” coronavirus rules which saw the Queen, 94, left sitting masked and alone at the funeral of her husband of 73 years. The Queen, who along with her late husband Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, was vaccinated against the Chinese virus all the way back in January, was following social distancing rules for funerals imposed on the rest of England by Boris Johnson’s administration. “So desperately sad to see the Queen sat alone during the funeral service,” wrote former UKIP, Brexit Party, and Reform UK party leader Farage on social media. “These Covid rules are inhuman.” So desperately sad to see the Queen sat alone during the funeral service. What’s New (and Old) in the DSM-5 Personality Disorders

When DSM-5.0 ( Diagnostic and Statistical Manual ) is published in May of 2013 by the American Psychiatric Association, mental health professionals will face the task of learning a new classification system to use when they provide diagnoses of their clients. The draft versions of the DSM were available for comment and review until December 2012, when final changes were voted into effect. Highly anticipated were proposed changes in the section of the DSM dealing with long-standing personality disturbances, known as " Personality Disorders ." After reviewing the extensive studies available on the website and in the psychiatric literature, all of which suggested that changes were all but certain to occur I had expected the personality disorder section to be radically revamped. It wasn't. Here you will learn the background to the proposed changes and what the ultimate decision not to change the system (for now) will mean for you. I should note that many of the people who … [Read more...] about What’s New (and Old) in the DSM-5 Personality Disorders

Addressing racial health inequities includes addressing the minimum wage

Over the past year, we have witnessed the national outcry against our “ race-based caste system ,” the frailty of our social safety nets and economic precarity disproportionately affecting communities of color . This stems from barriers rooted in poverty and discrimination with downstream collateral of inaccessible housing, education, transportation, healthcare and job security with paid sick leave and a living wage. It is well established that poverty and low-income status are associated with worse health status and outcomes . Currently, there is a feverish inward focus on increasing inclusion, representation and research to challenge structural racism within healthcare systems. However, empowering patients entangled in this complex web of racially-driven societal structures and intergenerational poverty cannot be achieved with insulated healthcare initiatives and policy changes. One of the ways to do this is to support federal policy that … [Read more...] about Addressing racial health inequities includes addressing the minimum wage

Nolte: What Should’ve Won the Best Picture Oscar – 1940 to 1949

In part three of this series , we look at the movies that should have won the Best Picture Oscar between 1940 and 1949. Let’s begin… 1940 What Did Win: Rebecca While director Alfred Hitchcock never won a competitive Oscar, his first American film did win a Best Picture Oscar and launched a career that would ride success after success right into the ’70s, including on television. Rebecca is remembered today as something of a stiff. Well, it’s not. What we have here is a masterpiece of mood and mystery anchored by a breathtaking performance from Joan Fontaine, in her first starring role. If you give this one a chance, if you shut off the lights and turn off your phone, Rebecca will transport and thrill. What Should’ve Won: The Grapes of Wrath John Ford’s stunning adaptation of John Steinbeck’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel has lost none of its power. The director (who won his second of a still-record four Best Director Oscars) brilliantly shaped … [Read more...] about Nolte: What Should’ve Won the Best Picture Oscar – 1940 to 1949

David Bossie: Cuomo nursing home deaths scandal should lead to resignation or impeachment – it’s that simple

close Video New York Democrat lawmaker alleges threatening phone call from Cuomo FOX News correspondent Bryan Llenas joins 'Special Report' with more on the developing story. On March 25, 2020, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo sentenced tens of thousands of New York’s most vulnerable residents to die. The now-infamous directive, sent to nursing home administrators, directors of nursing, and hospital discharge planners, forced nursing homes to accept patients who had either contracted COVID-19 or had been exposed to others infected with the virus. Over the following months frustrated New Yorkers demanded answers about the circumstances that led to the deaths of their loved ones. This determined group of grieving families stood firm and vowed to do what politicians and their allies in the mainstream media refused to do—hold Cuomo accountable. One of these New Yorkers is Fox News’ Senior Meteorologist Janice Dean. Last spring, Dean lost both her mother- … [Read more...] about David Bossie: Cuomo nursing home deaths scandal should lead to resignation or impeachment – it’s that simple
