China accused of using Twitter, Facebook against Hong Kong protests

SAN FRANCISCO: Twitter and Facebook said on Monday (Aug 19) they had dismantled a state-backed social media campaign originating in mainland China that sought to undermine protests in Hong Kong. Twitter said it suspended 936 accounts and the operations appeared to be a coordinated state-backed effort originating in China. It said these accounts were just the most active portions of this campaign and that a "larger, spammy network" of approximately 200,000 accounts had been proactively suspended before they were substantially active. Twitter to no longer accept advertising from state-controlled news media

SAN FRANCISCO: Social networking service Twitter on Monday (Aug 20) said it would no longer accept advertising from state-controlled news media. Twitter said in a statement that this measure would be a “global approach” and will be enforced across its "entire business". Affected accounts will be free to continue using the platform to engage in public conversation, but will not be allowed to use Twitter's advertising products, the microblogging platform said. The policy will apply to news media entities that are either financially or editorially controlled by the state, it added. Policy determinations will be made on the basis of critical issues of media freedom and independence. Twitter said. Microblogging website Twitter has opened the support for its audio chat room — Spaces — to Android users. This was announced via Spaces’ official Twitter account. Gigi Hadid says ‘joke’s on the hacker’ who broke into her Twitter account

Supermodel Gigi Hadid fell victim to hackers on Friday (May 10). The 24-year-old’s timeline was flooded with racist and anti-Semitic messages after a security breach. The racially-charged tweets included the phrases “I wish Germany won WWII” and “Hitler did nothing wrong”. The hacker also call Donald Trump the best president ever and used the word “n*****” several times. A number of the tweets asked her 9.2million followers to follow another user @grinchsquad13. The hacker shared a purported Twitter direct message exchange between Hadid and Kendall Jenner dating back to June 2013 to convince her followers of the authenticity of the posts. The tweets have since been deleted after the model regained control of her account. ‘Vial Of Death’: Louis Farrakhan Pushes Vaccine Conspiracy Theories In Videos Posted On Facebook, Twitter

Louis Farrakhan, the leader of the Nation of Islam, called the coronavirus shot a “vial of death” at an event held this weekend, and falsely claimed that the vaccine has killed people. Videos of the event are found on the Nation of Islam’s Facebook and Twitter accounts. Both social media sites have recently developed policies to combat vaccine-related misinformation. Farrakhan chided black celebrities who have promoted the vaccine, saying that they were ‘being bought and paid for’ by the government and aid in the ‘destruction of your people.’ Louis Farrakhan, the influential leader of the Nation of Islam, continued his crusade against the coronavirus vaccines over the weekend, calling the vaccine a “vial of death” during remarks at the extremist group’s convention, where other speakers falsely claimed that the vaccines have caused more than 900 deaths. Priyanka Gandhi joins Twitter

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday joined Twitter and garnered a massive response with tens of thousands following her on the social media platform within hours. Her logging on to Twitter with the account @priyankagandhi came on the day of her maiden visit to Uttar Pradesh as an All India Congress Committee general secretary. "Smt Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is now on Twitter. You may follow her at @priyankagandhi," a tweet from the Congress' official Twitter handle said.
