Higher unemployment rate, more retrenchments in Q2: MOM

SINGAPORE: Singapore's labour market saw higher unemployment and more retrenchments in the second quarter of 2018, although there was also employment growth and more job vacancies available, according to Ministry of Manpower (MOM) figures released on Thursday (Sep 13). In its quarterly labour market report, the ministry reported that the overall seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose slightly from 2 per cent in March to 2.1 per cent in June 2018. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate among residents rose from 2.8 per cent in March to 2.9 per cent in June, while the rate among citizens rose from 3 per cent to 3.1 per cent from March to June 2018. As of June, there were 67,300 residents and 59,800 citizens unemployed, MOM said. The higher unemployment comes "as more people entered the labour force to look for work on the back of continued expansion in economic activities" and remains lower than a year ago, the ministry added. Work-at-home will stay in play long after the pandemic recedes

After years of slowly easing toward remote work arrangements, companies and their employees had to take the plunge fully clothed in March. Instead of drowning, they learned to make it work, saving an untold number of jobs and ushering in profound changes that will carry into a post-pandemic world. “Remote work has been all or nothing in the past,” said Sara Sutton, founder and CEO of FlexJobs. “It doesn’t have to be all or nothing.” FlexJobs connects workers with remote work opportunities, and the Boulder-based company, practicing what it preaches, has operated remotely for 14 years. Despite being well-versed in what many companies were pushed into unwillingly, Sutton said this year has proved to be the hardest in the company’s history. What happened this year doesn’t at all reflect the benefits that remote work can offer, Sutton said. And yet, despite all the limitations, many employees came to prefer it. “It has been far more challenging than what typical remote work is by … [Read more...] about Work-at-home will stay in play long after the pandemic recedes

A day after her lengthy evidence session before a Scottish parliament committee, Ms Sturgeon said she would now "rest on that". Mr Salmond, who was first minister from 2007 until 2014, was awarded a pay-out of more than £500,000 by the Court of Session after it ruled in January 2019 that the Scottish government had acted unlawfully. As fewer buy homes, apartment construction surges

WASHINGTON — Builders have found a way to make money in a decrepit home market: apartments. Permit requests to build apartments jumped to a three-year high last month. In 12 months, they’ve surged 63 percent. Blame the housing bust, which left many people without the means, the credit or the stomach to buy. More people need apartments. The demand has driven up monthly rents. And apartment-home builders are rushing to cash in. That said, the overall home market remains depressed. Builders are still struggling. They broke ground on a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 628,000 homes last month, the government said Thursday. That’s barely half the pace that economists equate with a healthy market. High unemployment, stagnant pay and foreclosures have slowed sales of single-family homes, which make up about 70 percent of the homebuilding market. Apartment construction may be surging, but it’s a small portion of the industry. More apartment building won’t add enough jobs to … [Read more...] about As fewer buy homes, apartment construction surges

Talent migration section in LinkedIn report ‘misunderstood’, says Manpower Ministry

SINGAPORE: The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) said on Thursday (Sept 13) that a recently published LinkedIn report on emerging jobs in Singapore cited a statistic that had been "misunderstood" by some. The report, which came out last Thursday, used the LinkedIn data of over two million people with an account in Singapore to determine the top five fastest-growing jobs locally, such as data analysts and scientists. The 26-page report had a section on talent migration which showed a breakdown of LinkedIn users, who were previously based overseas, holding emerging jobs in Singapore. According to the LinkedIn report, it looked at members who, on their profile page, changed their location to Singapore after Jan 1 last year. LinkedIn also tracked the members' previous location. "The report thus shows which countries this 'talent migration' is from. Some people have misunderstood the LinkedIn report as saying that many or even most of the jobs are being held by foreigners," said MOM in … [Read more...] about Talent migration section in LinkedIn report ‘misunderstood’, says Manpower Ministry

Got just a weekend in Montreal? Here’s what you can do

Its cobblestone streets and French architecture make Old Montreal, the original settlement on the St Lawrence Seaway, compelling. But Montreal, now 376 years old, also has much to offer in its surrounding neighbourhoods. From the new restaurants of Gay Village to the annually updated murals of the Plateau and the trendy shopping of Mile End, the city’s districts make a strong case for buying a subway pass. Street festivals, outdoor performances, pop-up markets: Montreal so likes to mingle that even tourism boosters call it “the smoking and drinking section of Canada”. Come for the innovative food and drink – namely, the recently opened natural wine bars, speakeasies and restaurants serving Quebecois small plates – and stay for the culture, especially the new mural tours, digital light shows and symphonic experiments. FRIDAY 3PM: MEET MONTREAL'S MASTERS The expansive Montreal Museum of Fine Arts is known for its vast collection, including encyclopaedic holdings of … [Read more...] about Got just a weekend in Montreal? A celebration of the sick day: If you need that MC tomorrow, just take it

From a young age, I learned that sick is comfort; sick is to be cared for. When I stayed home with an earache in second grade, my dad didn’t double-check my homework or make me practice piano exercises twice on each hand. He brought me a bell so I could ring him and gave me three M&M’s for every dose of antibiotics that went down without a fuss. Undoubtedly, my penchant for minor ailments comes from a place of privilege. My physical body is healthy, which is why its occasional maladies have become phenomena that I get to relish. I recognise that chronic illness is another story, of course. But when I feel a cold coming on, I don’t stir Emergen-C and up my citrus intake, I lean in. My taste for illness solidified in high school, when I came down with mono. For two weeks, I lay in bed with a high fever while the kissing disease transformed my reputation. Along with the virus, I had contracted an air of mystery — the possibility that I was locking lips with someone my … [Read more...] about A celebration of the sick day: If you need that MC tomorrow, just take it
