Stay at home jobs

Work-at-home will stay in play long after the pandemic recedes

After years of slowly easing toward remote work arrangements, companies and their employees had to take the plunge fully clothed in March. Instead of drowning, they learned to make it work, saving an untold number of jobs and ushering in profound changes that will carry into a post-pandemic world. “Remote work has been all or nothing in the past,” said Sara Sutton, founder and CEO of FlexJobs. “It doesn’t have to be all or nothing.” FlexJobs connects workers with remote work opportunities, and the Boulder-based company, practicing what it preaches, has operated remotely for 14 years. Despite being well-versed in what many companies were pushed into unwillingly, Sutton said this year has proved to be the hardest in the company’s history. What happened this year doesn’t at all reflect the benefits that remote work can offer, Sutton said. And yet, despite all the limitations, many employees came to prefer it. “It has been far more challenging than what typical remote work is by … [Read more...] about Work-at-home will stay in play long after the pandemic recedes

Got just a weekend in Montreal? Here’s what you can do

Its cobblestone streets and French architecture make Old Montreal, the original settlement on the St Lawrence Seaway, compelling. But Montreal, now 376 years old, also has much to offer in its surrounding neighbourhoods. From the new restaurants of Gay Village to the annually updated murals of the Plateau and the trendy shopping of Mile End, the city’s districts make a strong case for buying a subway pass. Street festivals, outdoor performances, pop-up markets: Montreal so likes to mingle that even tourism boosters call it “the smoking and drinking section of Canada”. Come for the innovative food and drink – namely, the recently opened natural wine bars, speakeasies and restaurants serving Quebecois small plates – and stay for the culture, especially the new mural tours, digital light shows and symphonic experiments. FRIDAY 3PM: MEET MONTREAL'S MASTERS The expansive Montreal Museum of Fine Arts is known for its vast collection, including encyclopaedic holdings of … [Read more...] about Got just a weekend in Montreal? Solution to gender imbalance is gender equality

Editor's note: Shanxi-based expert Wu Xiuming has sparked a heated public debate by proposing that the large number of single men in rural areas be encouraged to "pair with" single women in urban areas. The gender imbalance in urban and rural areas has become a social and demographic problem. Two experts share their views with China Daily's Yao Yuxin on how to address this problem. Excerpts follow: Marriage is a matter of choice for many women That China has a serious gender imbalance is evident from the latest official data released in early 2020, which show that in 2019, there were more than 715 million men compared with 684 million women in the country. But to suggest that the gender imbalance problem can be addressed by "pairing" the single men in rural areas with single women in urban areas is unrealistic, because there is little similarity in the two groups' attitude toward life and thought process. Most of the single men in the countryside lack the quality and … [Read more...] about Solution to gender imbalance is gender equality

New rules came into force, but ordinance published late

Font size: A - | A + 0 Although several new, stricter anti-pandemic rules, on which the cabinet agreed on the evening of February 28 , came into force already on the morning of Wednesday, March 3 , the respective ordinance by hygienists was missing. Our paywall policy: The Slovak Spectator has decided to make all the articles on the special measures, statistics and basic information about the coronavirus available to everyone. We believe this is an issue where accurate and fact-based information is important for people to cope. The Public Health Authority (ÚVZ) published it only in the evening. Here are the rules that now need to be followed: a night curfew was introduced between 20:00 and 1:00 the following day. Exceptions include: going to and from work; going to and from the doctor; walking pets; going … [Read more...] about New rules came into force, but ordinance published late

Mothers Deserve to Feel Like Heroes of the Pandemic

Source: BRO(.)vector/Shutterstock All of us have been impacted by the pandemic, but mothers in particular are bearing a burden of responsibility that is almost intolerable. Recent headlines and data from the last year are grim: Women have lost more jobs than men. According to U.S. Department of Labor data, women lost 156,000 jobs overall in December 2020, while men gained 16,000. More than just a lost foothold in a profession, reduced work hours, layoffs, and vacated jobs often trigger food insecurity and homelessness. The pandemic economy has hit child care workers, who are predominantly women, especially hard. Sixty percent of licensed child care centers have closed during the pandemic, and as many as 4.5 million child care slots could be permanently lost due to the pandemic. Interruptions caused by child care affect women more than men. Studies show that as a result of school, child care, and camp closings, significantly more women than men have reduced their work … [Read more...] about Mothers Deserve to Feel Like Heroes of the Pandemic

The status quo is not an option amid a crisis in this land of plenty

We have proven to ourselves, and to the world, that we are very good at handling emergencies when we all pull together for a common cause. An example is our covid-19 response which has been one of the most effective in the world. We also know that when we don’t pull together for the common good emergencies can become catastrophic for the most vulnerable in the community. We learned that in the mid-1980s when an economic downturn hit business and employment very hard. Jobs were lost, private enterprise was severely mauled and big corporates closed down to survival mode. Making matters worse were banks and other lending institutions who, instead of pulling their belts in a notch with everyone else and helping the nation weather the storm, charged in like starving hyenas on a wounded buffalo, increasing interest rates almost weekly to unsurvivable levels. We now have two new closely linked emergencies for many people simply because one section of the community is taking advantage of … [Read more...] about The status quo is not an option amid a crisis in this land of plenty

He couldn’t lose weight on his own. Then he opted for surgery that’s gaining ground

SINGAPORE: At his heaviest, Vasoo Kesevan weighed 212 kilogrammes. Even before he reached that point, he was hurting. Whenever he took his children to the playground, he could see some of the parents looking at him, “as if they’d never seen a big-sized guy in their lives before”. It was the kind of look he got wherever he went. Sometimes there was more, for example once when he was waiting for a taxi with his two children. “A small boy — I think he must’ve been (in) Kindergarten Two or Primary One, somewhere around there — looked at me. He started to tell his mother, ‘Look at this fat man,’” recalled the 47-year-old. “The mother didn’t say anything.” These are stories that one doctor has heard many times before. Tan Chun Hai, a consultant in Khoo Teck Puat Hospital’s (KTPH’s) department of general surgery, has seen many patients like Vasoo. “They have difficulty fitting into the society. They take up more than one MRT seat (and) have difficulty getting on the bus,” he … [Read more...] about He couldn’t lose weight on his own. Then he opted for surgery that’s gaining ground

ASEAN countries among world’s outperforming emerging economies: Report

SINGAPORE: Driven by pro-growth policies and presence of dynamic companies, members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) are among the world’s best performing emerging economies, said a report released by the McKinsey Global Institute (MGI) on Thursday (Sep 14). Nevertheless, the region “cannot rest on its laurels” and will need to address issues, such as income inequality, to maintain its rapid growth momentum. For the report, MGI, the business and economics research arm of McKinsey & Company, analysed 71 major emerging economies around the world, and identified 18 that show records of stronger and more consistent growth than their peers. ASEAN accounted for eight of these “outperformers”, the report said. They include the "long-term outperformers" comprising Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand, which averaged at least 3.5 per cent annual per capita gross domestic product (GD) growth over 50 years. Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam also made … [Read more...] about ASEAN countries among world’s outperforming emerging economies: Report
