A House Judiciary Committee meeting Wednesday was derailed as members sparred over masks, vaccines and social distancing in the later stages of the coronavirus pandemic. Republicans, including Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., said that wearing masks even as most members of Congress have had the opportunity to get vaccinated sends the wrong message to Americans. Democrats, meanwhile, said that members still need to observe health protocols in accordance with the recommendations of the attending physician and because not all members have been vaccinated. The meeting is technically a markup of several bills, including one in response to the Trump travel ban and another creating a commission to study reparations. But it got off track early when Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Calif., lodged his complaint that there aren't … [Read more...] about House reps spar over masks and social distancing, derailing committee meeting on immigration

: The Mundane Disarranged by a Heart of Darkness
With Joji , Dileesh Pothan has found a way, once more, to use everything he has learnt to further push the boundaries of his art, observes Sreehari Nair. IMAGE: Fahadh Faasil in and as Joji . Greed may be good or bad, but what does Greed sound like? In Dileesh Pothan's Joji , a freewheeling adaption of Macbeth , Composer Justin Varghese serves up a clue. Macbeth's curse is that he has to be careful, above all, of those who encourage him; spurred on to commit regicide by a wife and three witches, he quite literally dies of encouragement. In Joji , there are no permanent witches. The witch, in fact, turns up by chance and he's a distant relative (Shammi Thilakan plays Dr Felix as a dodger and an inadvertent promoter of bad habits) who -- under a beautiful moonlit sky, with alcohol stirring in his veins -- tells Joji Panachel (Fahadh Faasil) that his well-heeled father, now paralysed, would not survive the fortnight. Delighted by the news, Joji turns his car away … [Read more...] about : The Mundane Disarranged by a Heart of Darkness
Allison doesn’t want Mercedes F1 team boss role – Wolff
It was announced last week that, as of July 1, Allison will hold a newly-created position of chief technical officer, a change that some interpreted as a possible first step to him eventually being the overall head of the team. Wolff retains the team principal job for the foreseeable future, having explored his options over the past year. The Austrian has made it clear that he will eventually move aside, but he stressed that the job won't go to Allison. "I would say if you look at things, he would absolutely be capable to be the team principal," Wolff said of Allison. "And also the people here, there's so much respect [for him] within the organisation. "But the thing is very easy. He said, 'Never, ever I would do this. Team principal requires different skills.' And so he said, 'No, thank you. No'. "James and I speak multiple times every single day. And we're totally coordinated on the strategic direction of Mercedes Motorsport, and Mercedes Grand Prix. So much earlier … [Read more...] about Allison doesn’t want Mercedes F1 team boss role – Wolff

GOP White House hopefuls move forward as Trump considers 2024 run
WASHINGTON — Less than three months after former President Donald Trump left the White House, the race to succeed him atop the Republican Party is already beginning. Trump’s former secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, has launched an aggressive schedule, visiting states that will play a pivotal role in the 2024 primaries, and he has signed a contract with Fox News Channel. Mike Pence, Trump’s former vice president, has started a political advocacy group, finalized a book deal and later this month will give his first speech since leaving office in South Carolina. And Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has been courting donors, including in Trump’s backyard, with a prominent speaking slot before the former president at a GOP fundraising retreat dinner this month at Mar-a-Lago, the Florida resort where Trump now lives. Trump ended his presidency with such a firm grip on Republican voters that party leaders fretted he would freeze the field of potential 2024 candidates, delaying preparations as he … [Read more...] about GOP White House hopefuls move forward as Trump considers 2024 run
Heartbroken parents pay tribute to ‘brave’ son, 3, who died of cancer in their arms
The heartbroken parents of a "brave" three-year-old boy say he struggled against his terminal cancer without ever losing his smile. Described as a "true Nottingham Forest fan", Archie Warriner's Hepatoblastoma liver cancer spread to his lungs after battling against the illness for almost 15 months. Although there were signs some of the treatments seemed to be working, his family said his bones became extremely brittle. They were told by an oncologist he needed a "miracle". The "very loved boy" died in his parents' arms on Wednesday, reports Nottinghamshire Live . Dad Michael Warriner, 41, said: "All day we kind of knew it was going to happen from the morning, he was nonresponsive, he was just kind of lying there, his eyes were rolling a bit, he was on a lot of morphine. Money can be donated to a fundraising page set up to support the family by clicking here "It was probably to do with that. But moments before he passed, he kind of just sat up and opened … [Read more...] about Heartbroken parents pay tribute to ‘brave’ son, 3, who died of cancer in their arms
Telco commissioner Tristan Gilbertson has two big tasks and a ‘paradox’ to fix
Telecommunications commissioner Tristan Gilbertson will need to decide this year whether Chorus should be forced to cut, or allowed to raise the wholesale price of ultrafast broadband. He also looks set to release guidelines to ensure internet providers are upfront about the options facing the 30 per cent or so of consumers in UFB areas who could start to be forced off the copper phone network from September. And he has a mystery to solve; why complaints about telcos continue to rise, despite his assessment it is in their interests to behave well and that they are not actually trying to do the dirty on customers. After nearly a year in the job and despite the inevitable battle ahead over broadband pricing, the former industry lawyer paints quite a glowing picture of the industry.
