Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi said Tuesday she would have fought Capitol rioters should they have entered the House chamber, according to USA Today. Pelosi and other members of Congress were in the House chamber on Jan. 6 when a group of rioters entered seeking to disrupt the certification of the 2020 presidential election. Pelosi was asked by USA Today what she would have done if she wasn’t evacuated in time, to which she responded, “Well, I’m pretty tough. I’m a street fighter. They would have had a battle on their hands.” Pelosi held up her four-inch stiletto heels and said, “I would have had these,” according to USA Today. In a wide-ranging interview with USA TODAY, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi described what she would have done if her security agents hadn’t managed to evacuate her in time during the Jan. 6 insurrection. https://t.co/Da06BDxUMZ — USA TODAY (@USATODAY) April 13, 2021 One of the Capitol rioters, Richard Barnett, was photographed … [Read more...] about ‘I’m A Street Fighter’: Pelosi Says She Would Have Fought Capitol Rioters

Red paint in Burmese streets mark 700+ deaths
Marking over 700 deaths in the Burmese military crackdown, anti-coup protesters splashed red paint across the streets of Yangon to represent the blood of those killed in the growing crisis. Myanmar has ground to a halt as the military junta attempted to silence opposition to their February 1 takeover with deadly force. 714 deaths have been verified by local monitoring groups, but they warn the actual number may be much higher. The economy and daily functioning of the country is immobile, the internet has been cut off to many citizens, even Myanmar’s Thingyan New Year festival, similar to Thailand’s Songkran holiday, has been cancelled. Instead of water fights in the street, protesters explained they used the holiday to draw a parallel, splashing red paint “blood” instead to draw attention to the Burmese deaths at the hands of the military. “The purpose of the “bleeding strike” is to remember the martyrs who died in the struggle for democracy. We should not be happy during this … [Read more...] about Red paint in Burmese streets mark 700+ deaths
Coinbase Makes Its Debut—and Bitcoin Arrives on Wall Street
Physicists are constantly rethinking how bubbles burst. It’s one of those nagging problems in physics, deceptively simple, like working out the forces that keep a bike upright . The problem is that while bubbles pop around us all the time, those pops occur in a fraction of a second, making the basic principles hard to glimpse. But a few years ago, using exceptionally quick cameras, scientists noticed an unusual phenomenon: bubbles, when they rupture, form many other bubbles—“daughters,” they call them—that encircle the parent. In other words, a bubble contains innumerable others waiting to be created and destroyed in an instant. How many bubbles lie in wait during this speculative spring? In recent months, money has floated away from reality and entered new realms of weirdness: nonfungible tokens , memecoins , and stonks . Ask an economist why, and they will tell you money has had few places to go. During the pandemic, a lot of money has been printed. For many people, it … [Read more...] about Coinbase Makes Its Debut—and Bitcoin Arrives on Wall Street

Fashion St shops to be rebuilt soon
In absence of govt aid, shopkeepers to use earlier funds of Rs 27 lakh to bring livelihood back on feet Shopkeepers who lost all their means of livelihoods in the fire that gutted the Fashion Street market on March 27 night have now decided to use the Rs 27 lakh — given by the state earlier to compensate for their lockdown losses — to rebuild their business. Instead of lamenting the lack of help from the Pune Cantonment Board ( PCB ), the shopkeepers will use the government aid given during the 2020 lockdown to rebuild the market in adherence to all fire and safety norms. The structure will also be more spacious than the previous one. To the saved Rs 27 lakh, they are expected to pool in money after selling what remained of the shops post the fire like tin sheets and furniture. The shopkeepers have also met deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar and other politicians for monetary aid. PCB chief executive officer Amit Kumar said, “We are in talks with the … [Read more...] about Fashion St shops to be rebuilt soon
Girl, 8, who fought Covid for 3 weeks in intensive care saved by ‘amazing’ NHS staff
A dad whose eight-year-old daughter fought Covid in intensive care has lauded the 'amazing' NHS medics who saved her life. Paul Mercer and wife Jeanette watched daughter Kennedy spend three weeks in intensive care fighting for her life. Medics - many staying away from their own families - battled to save Kennedy's life at Great Ormond Street in London. Kennedy, sister of TOWIE star Kelsey Stratford, has a rare condition called Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) which makes her particularly vulnerable to coronavirus . Paul, 42, told The Mirror she would not have survived without the care she received. He was stunned by the Government's recent one per cent pay rise offer, which has sparked widespread condemnation, feeling it did not properly reward the NHS medics. He said: "It's an insult. "They do an amazing job at the best of times, in a global pandemic they're putting their lives on the line. "A lot of people, including Kennedy, wouldn't be here if it wasn't for the … [Read more...] about Girl, 8, who fought Covid for 3 weeks in intensive care saved by ‘amazing’ NHS staff

The next big thing in design? No new design at all
advertisement advertisement advertisement Heading into the summer of 1833, Lexington, Kentucky, was home to about 6,000 people. By fall, more than 500 of them had died from cholera. The fortunate died fast. Others hung on for days, their brains aware of their dehydrating bodies. Bodies piled up faster than they could be buried. Orphaned children wandered the streets begging for food. advertisement advertisement Like many cities, Lexington grew up around a river. The Town Branch Creek gave the city life, providing a steady supply of water for drinking, growing crops, and running mills. When the Town Branch flooded, however, its water mixed with human excrement from outhouses and animal excrement from free-roaming pigs and cows. Because Lexington rests on porous limestone, the aboveground floodwater cesspool seeped into the underground water that supplied the city’s wells. Lexington’s decimation by cholera could have been prevented … [Read more...] about The next big thing in design? No new design at all
