GRANADA HILLS (CBSLA) — Residents of a Granada Hills neighborhood fear for their safety and property values after what looks to be a junkyard has taken over one home’s yard. Neighbors have been trying to get the city to force the owner to clean it up for nearly three years, but to no avail. Now, the city, the Los Angeles Police Department, and even the television show “Hoarders,” have gotten involved. CBSLA learned that the city is finally going to stand up and try to fix the problem for neighbors by filing a nuisance abatement. The Los Angeles Police Department was also seen on Bircher Street, going door-to-door interviewing neighbors — the same people who say they have been fighting for … [Read more...] about Granada Hills Junk House: ‘Hoarders’ TV Show, City, LAPD Get Involved As Junk Remains Piled In Yard Of Granada Hills Home

Govt to build more off-road cycling paths
SINGAPORE : The government will continue to develop off-road cycling paths for intra-town cycling, and see if it can do more on the infrastructure front to make it safer to cycle on the roads. Cycling penalties are also being reviewed to ensure that they are commensurate with the severity of offences. Parliamentary Secretary for Transport, Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, highlighted these points in Parliament on Monday, amid calls for the government to do more to make the roads safer for cyclists. 48-year-old David Belette was hit by a car while cycling along East Coast Service Road recently. The company director suffered multiple injuries, including a broken neck and knee cap, as well as ribs. He is recovering but fears he may never be able to cycle again. Mr Belette said: "We all want to use the roads. We all want to get to work safely. We all want to see our families safely. So I think the only way we are going to achieve that is when cyclists start to obey all of the … [Read more...] about Govt to build more off-road cycling paths
The Psychological Impact of the COVID-19 Vaccines
The incredible COVID-19 vaccination effort is underway around the world, something we had dreamed about but were hardly sure of a year ago when the frightening shutdowns began across the globe including the United States. A combination of factors (most importantly, some preparatory work started during the “dry runs” of the smaller but worrisome SARS and MERS outbreaks) allowed this one shining success to flourish during a year of horrific tragedy and missteps, with over half a million now dead in our country to the horrible novel coronavirus . More than a few people have noted feeling very emotional after receiving their first shot of the COVID-19 vaccine; even stereotypically stoic grown men have admitted to crying afterwards. Receiving the shot is more than just a lifesaving intervention; it is a symbol of so many things, a turning point during one of the hardest years in our modern history. Essentially for a year we have been living under the gun of a potentially deadly … [Read more...] about The Psychological Impact of the COVID-19 Vaccines
Parliament: More areas to be marked as public paths; LTA approval needed to import e-scooters, e-bikes
SINGAPORE - Open spaces such as courtyards and plazas will be designated as public paths later this year, enabling the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to take enforcement action against cyclists and personal mobility device (PMD) users flouting rules in such areas. And LTA's approval will be required before any business or individual can import PMDs or power-assisted bicycles (PABs), with offenders facing a fine and jail time from the first quarter of next year. These are measures introduced under two separate Bills passed on Tuesday (May 26) as the authorities take steps to strengthen the laws and enforcement as an increasing number of people use mobility devices to get around. The debate for both Bills was held concurrently in Parliament, with 11 MPs speaking on the issues. Senior Minister of State for Transport Lam Pin Min told the House that the Active Mobility (Amendment No. 2) Bill will allow path-connected open spaces such as courtyards, plazas, squares and atriums … [Read more...] about Parliament: More areas to be marked as public paths; LTA approval needed to import e-scooters, e-bikes

Suncor refinery north of Denver faces state review of outdated permits, plans $300 million push to be “better not bigger”
Colorado officials committed to cleaner air and reducing reliance on fossil fuels have reached a turning point on whether to tolerate the hulking oil refinery north of Denver that ranks among the state’s major polluters and regularly malfunctions . They must approve or deny Suncor Energy’s applications to renew its operating permits, which serve as contracts governing the emission levels of toxic pollutants that can cause cancer and serious heart, lung and other health problems. This is oversight power Colorado air pollution regulators have declined to use over nearly a decade of letting Suncor run the refinery under the equivalent of an expired driver’s license — a perk granted to companies if they submit timely renewal applications. Suncor’s outdated permits, which records show were issued in 2006 and 2012, allow emissions of 866,100 tons a year of heat-trapping gases and toxics including sulfur dioxide, benzene and hydrogen cyanide . During malfunctions, pollution … [Read more...] about Suncor refinery north of Denver faces state review of outdated permits, plans $300 million push to be “better not bigger”

Richarlison scores winner as Everton beats West Brom 1-0
WEST BROMWICH, England - Richarlison kept up Everton’s charge toward the Champions League by scoring a second-half header in a 1-0 win at West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League on Thursday. The Brazil forward earned Everton a third straight win by glancing the ball home from the edge of the six-yard box in the 65th minute following an inswinging corner from Gylfi Sigurdsson. It was his fourth goal in the last four games. Everton moved into fifth place, four points behind third-place Leicester with a game in hand. Mbaye Diagne’s stoppage-time goal for West Brom was ruled out for offside as Sam Allardyce’s next-to-last team remained nine points adrift of safety and slipped closer to relegation. Everton rode its luck at times against the energetic hosts, but managed to keep a clean sheet for the third straight game. Diagne had two early chances, firstly from a hanging header that was clawed away by goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and then from a shot that flew over. While … [Read more...] about Richarlison scores winner as Everton beats West Brom 1-0
