REUTERS: As the PGA Tour gets set to make its return this week in Fort Worth, Texas, some golfers used part of their pre-tournament news conferences on Tuesday to spread a message of unity amid worldwide protests against racism. The death of George Floyd, who died on May 25 after a white police officer in Minneapolis knelt on his neck, ignited a wave of protests against the mistreatment of black people. World number two Jon Rahm has been an outspoken supporter of the Black Lives Matter movement and explained during a virtual news conference from Colonial Country Club, site of this week's Charles Schwab Challenge, why it was important to do so. "I've never been racially profiled for the colour of my skin, but I have had some experiences. And it's not a good feeling," said Spain's Rahm. "I can't fathom the reason why anybody would treat somebody differently just the way you look or they sound or what you believe in. We're all the same. We're all human beings, and we should all … [Read more...] about PGA Tour players call for social justice

Rugby: Pichot pushing for British and Irish Lions to tour Americas
REUTERS: World Rugby vice-chairman Agustin Pichot says he intends to turn the British and Irish Lions into a global phenomenon by making the touring side visit North and South America if he is elected the global governing body's new chairman. The Lions, a squad made up of players from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland, tour every four years and play against New Zealand, Australia and South Africa in rotation. Pichot, a former scrumhalf who is on the campaign trail for an election in which he is up against current chairman Bill Beaumont, said he loves the tradition but hopes to make the Lions tour other continents in future. "People think I don't like tradition, but I speak to Lions players like Brian O'Driscoll and it's a great product," Pichot told the Daily Mail newspaper. "I love it, there is still room for the Lions. It is a traditional thing, but we can still add a modern look to it. I would use the Lions on a more worldwide scale, I would like to see that brand … [Read more...] about Rugby: Pichot pushing for British and Irish Lions to tour Americas
PGA Tour makes subdued return, Rose sets pace at Colonial
REUTERS: The PGA Tour quietly returned to action for the first time in three months amid the COVID-19 pandemic as the world's best golfers competed at a spectator-free Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas on Thursday. Everyone in a field featuring the top five golfers in the world rankings underwent mandatory testing prior to teeing off at the Charles Schwab Challenge where the PGA Tour ended its longest unscheduled break from competition since World War Two. "Just being out here is successful, to be honest with you, getting started," said American Ryan Palmer, who hit the day's opening tee shot. "I don't see anything holding us back moving forward. I think today was the biggest day, just getting this first day off." Despite an unusually deep field that was reminiscent of a major championship as players were eager to shake off the rust of a forced shutdown, the action was subdued with no spectators to applaud the awe-inspiring shots. Englishman Justin Rose showed no … [Read more...] about PGA Tour makes subdued return, Rose sets pace at Colonial

Wales coach says tour to Japan, New Zealand highly unlikely
CARDIFF: Wales are continuing to prepare for their mid-year tour to Japan and New Zealand but with the sporting world still paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic, coach Wayne Pivac said on Wednesday he is not confident it will go ahead. The Welsh, who still have to complete their Six Nations campaign, are scheduled to play Japan on June 27 and then two tests against the All Blacks on July 4 and 11. "It does seem unlikely and, as each day and each week goes by, that seems more and more the case," Pivac said in a video conference call with reporters. "But until it is called off, or postponed, we have to prepare as if it's going ahead and that's certainly what we are doing." Wales' new coach, who took over after last year's World Cup, said players were continuing to keep up their fitness while locked down at home in anticipation of touring in two months' time. Pivac suggested, however, players would need five to six weeks of full-time training, once regulations on social … [Read more...] about Wales coach says tour to Japan, New Zealand highly unlikely

Varner not getting ahead of himself despite blistering start at Colonial
REUTERS: Harold Varner III said he is taking it one hole at a time after firing a first round seven-under-par 63 to grab a share of the lead at the Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth on Thursday. The 29-year-old American's bogey-free round is a boost to his hopes of capturing a maiden PGA Tour victory but he said he is staying focused on the present. "If I'm thinking about winning a golf tournament right now, I've probably lost it," he told reporters. Varner is one of only a handful of black players on the PGA Tour and has been in discussions with commissioner Jay Monahan about how to make the pro game more diverse in light of widespread protest against racial inequality. He said that while he wants to help foster change in the sport he loves, he knows the best way to elevate his voice is to do what he does best - hit the ball like he did on Thursday. "The reason I have a platform is because I'm really good at golf," he said. "I just need to focus on that." The PGA … [Read more...] about Varner not getting ahead of himself despite blistering start at Colonial
