Fukushima farmers plant indigo to rebuild battered town

A decade after nuclear plant disaster The two women farmers believe indigo dyeing could help people in the area recover from effects of devastating tsunami and N plant disaster MINAMISOMA For two years after the Fukushima nuclear plant disaster in Japan, farmers in nearby Minamisoma were not allowed to grow crops because of radiations. After the restriction was lifted, two farmers, Kiyoko Mori and Yoshiko Ogura , found an unusual way to rebuild their lives and help their destroyed community. They planted indigo and soon began dying fabric with dye produced from the plants. “Dyeing lets us forget the bad things,” for a while, Mori said. “It’s a process of healing for us.” The massive earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011, caused three of the reactors at the nuclear plant to melt and wrecked more than just the farmers’ livelihoods. The homes of many people in Minamisoma were destroyed by the tsunami. Mori and Ogura believed that indigo dyeing could help people in … [Read more...] about Fukushima farmers plant indigo to rebuild battered town

Japan’s JCR Pharma to build new plant to produce COVID-19 vaccine solution

TOKYO -- JCR Pharmaceuticals Co said on Thursday it would build a new plant in Japan to expand production of ingredients for COVID-19 vaccines over the longer term. JCR Pharma along with Daiichi Sankyo Co and other Japanese partners are cooperating to produce and distribute the COVID-19 vaccine developed by AstraZeneca Plc and Oxford University. The Japanese government has arranged to buy 120 million doses of the vaccine, which was submitted to domestic regulators for approval on Feb. 5. JCR Pharma said in a statement that it has been making bulk substances for the vaccine at an existing plant but will build another one to comply with government requirements. The Japanese drugmaker signed a contract in December to make substances for the AstraZeneca vaccine. But as a condition for a government grant to reinforce the country’s vaccine production capability through 2030, it needed to build another facility. JCR said it will spend about 11.6 billion yen ($108.28 million) to build … [Read more...] about Japan’s JCR Pharma to build new plant to produce COVID-19 vaccine solution

4-Billion-Year-Old Fossil Proteins Resurrected

Researchers have reconstructed the structure of 4-billion-year-old proteins. The primeval proteins, described today (Aug. 8) in the journal Structure, could reveal new insights about the origin of life, said study co-author José Manuel Sanchez Ruíz, a physical chemist at the University of Granada in Spain. Exactly how life emerged on Earth more than 3 billion years ago is a mystery. Some scientists believe that lightning struck the primordial soup in ammonia-rich oceans, producing the complex molecules that formed the precursors to life. Others believe that chemical reactions at deep-sea hydrothermal vents gave rise to cell membranes and simple cellular pumps. And still others believe that space rocks brought the raw ingredients for life — or perhaps even life itself — to Earth. [ 7 Theories on the Origin of Life ] But it's difficult to recreate events that happened so far in the distant past. Sanchez Ruiz and his colleagues decided to study a class of proteins called … [Read more...] about 4-Billion-Year-Old Fossil Proteins Resurrected

2011 Comic-Con: ‘The Walking Dead’ Unveils Season 2 Premiere Date, New Trailer, More

Deadline Comic-Con TV correspondent Gary Hodges filed his report: UPDATED: The Walking Dead ( AMC ) enjoys an overlap of fans at Comic-Con, both fans of the series and the graphic novel it’s based on. The panel held off bringing out the cast at first, instead introducing writer/director/producer Frank Darabont, makeup artist Greg Nicotero, and executive producers Gale Anne Hurd and Robert Kirkman (who’s also the writer of the comic book series). Hurd was the first to make news, announcing that the season premiere of season 2 would air Sunday, October 16 th at its new time, 9pm. A trailer was next (video below), which did a good job of creating a feeling of dread but with too many fast cuts to discern anything specific about future episodes. (People fleeing zombies, shooting at zombies, hiding from zombies. And so on.) It closes with spoken dialogue: “I guess I’m losing hope. But like I said, it’s all about slim chances now. And a slim chance is better than none.” With … [Read more...] about 2011 Comic-Con: ‘The Walking Dead’ Unveils Season 2 Premiere Date, New Trailer, More

The Big Read: As countries wage war on plastics, the jury’s still out on how best to tackle the problem

SINGAPORE: In Rwanda, being caught with a plastic bag is a crime. The African nation is so serious about tackling the global plastic pollution crisis that since a decade ago, it is illegal to import, produce, use or sell plastic bags and plastic packaging except for specific industries such as healthcare and pharmaceuticals. Those caught carrying illegal plastic are liable to be fined, jailed or forced to make public confessions, the New York Times reported last year. In 2017, another African nation, Kenya, also enacted a law to punish anyone making, selling or importing plastic bags with as much as four years in jail or a US$19,000 (S$26,140) fine. While their measures to combat plastic pollution are not as drastic compared to Rwanda or Kenya, more than 40 countries the world over including China, the United Kingdom, Australia and Malaysia have banned, restricted or taxed the use of single-use plastics. The European Union (EU) is planning to enact a ban on such use among its … [Read more...] about The Big Read: As countries wage war on plastics, the jury’s still out on how best to tackle the problem

Revealed: Potential Wrestlemania 37 matches of WWE Raw

So both the confirmed matches are from the SmackDown division. But Raw isn't lagging behind either as they've started planting seeds for WrestleMania 37 matches from their side. As seen on this week’s episode, at least four big bouts for the Show of Shows have been teased and these are waiting to be confirmed. Bobby Lashley has finally accomplished his goal to become the WWE Champion when he forced The Miz to tap out to the Hurt Lock in a Lumberjack Match in the main event of RAW. Following this Title change, it's almost certain that Lashley will face Drew McIntyre for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 37. Now that The Miz has dropped the WWE Championship, he will go back to the unfinished feud with Bad Bunny and Damian Priest. The Miz and John Morrison are booked to face Damian Priest and Bad Bunny in a tag team match at 'Mania and there won't be any change in that angle. A storyline has been going between Shane McMahon and Braun Strowman which should produce a big singles … [Read more...] about Revealed: Potential Wrestlemania 37 matches of WWE Raw

The beauty of slow travel: Exploring South Korea’s Jeju Island on foot

The Jeju Olle Trail has been called the South Korean Camino de Santiago, the ancient pilgrimage route that leads to the shrine of the apostle St James in Santiago de Compostela, northern Spain. Though the Olle Trail doesn’t lead to resting places of saints, the trek can turn out to be a somewhat religious experience – usually around the time the faint throbbing in the vicinity of your feet becomes palpable. It’s at this stage you start praying the end of the trail is around the next corner. FINDING THE PATH The trail is the brainchild of former news editor Suh Myung Sook. Mentally drained after 23 years as a political journalist, Suh decided to quit her job and do some soul-searching for the next chapter of her life. At age 50, she decided to travel the 800km Camino de Santiago alone. The rustic, unspoiled vistas on the Camino reminded her of Jeju, where she was born and raised. It planted the thought of creating a similar trail back home, to explore “the beauty of … [Read more...] about The beauty of slow travel: Exploring South Korea’s Jeju Island on foot

Johnson & Johnson knew for decades that asbestos lurked in its baby powder

LOS ANGELES: Darlene Coker knew she was dying. She just wanted to know why. She knew that her cancer, mesothelioma, arose in the delicate membrane surrounding her lungs and other organs. She knew it was as rare as it was deadly, a signature of exposure to asbestos. And she knew it afflicted mostly men who inhaled asbestos dust in mines and industries such as shipbuilding that used the carcinogen before its risks were understood. Coker, 52 years old, had raised two daughters and was running a massage school in Lumberton, a small town in eastern Texas. How had she been exposed to asbestos? “She wanted answers,” her daughter Cady Evans said. Fighting for every breath and in crippling pain, Coker hired Herschel Hobson, a personal-injury lawyer. He homed in on a suspect: the Johnson’s Baby Powder that Coker had used on her infant children and sprinkled on herself all her life. Hobson knew that talc and asbestos often occurred together in the earth, and that mined talc could be … [Read more...] about Johnson & Johnson knew for decades that asbestos lurked in its baby powder

U.S. panel recommends export ‘choke points’ to prevent Chinese dominance in semiconductors

(Subscribe to our Today's Cache newsletter for a quick snapshot of top 5 tech stories. Click here to subscribe for free.) A U.S. national security commission on Monday recommended Congress tighten up "choke points" on chipmaking technology to prevent China from overtaking the United States in semiconductors in the coming years. The National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence (NSCAI), led by former Google Chairman Eric Schmidt, recommended clamping down on China's ability to procure the manufacturing equipment needed to make advanced computing chips. Such chips are used in surveillance technologies such as facial recognition. "China is making an aggressive push to promote authoritarianism around the world," an NSCAI official told Reuters. "It boils down to semiconductors." Much chip making equipment comes from U.S. firms such as Applied Materials Inc and Lam Research Corp which are already subject to American export controls. But keygear also comes from firms such … [Read more...] about U.S. panel recommends export ‘choke points’ to prevent Chinese dominance in semiconductors
