Vernon Reid and the Power of Comic Book Complexity
By Michael A. Friedman “Look in my eyes, what do you see? The cult of personality . I know your anger , I know your dreams . I’ve been everything you want to be. I’m the cult of personality.” — from “ Cult of Personality ” by Living Colour There is something enticing about viewing the world in simplistic all-or-none terms of “good” and “evil.” We love seeing ourselves as righteous and perfect, while viewing those with whom we have conflict as villainous and devoid of moral value. Why get involved in the stickiness of the complexity of human interaction? And often we choose our entertainment based on our desire for this fantasy world. Good guys versus bad guys, cops versus robbers, superheroes versus villains — these are the dichotomies that pervade our cultural landscape. And the more intense the retribution, the better – because if … [Read more...] about Vernon Reid and the Power of Comic Book Complexity
Is It COVID Stress or Is It Love?
From Hallmark cards to ballads of passion, the heart has intimately been connected to love, affection, and romance for much of our human existence. How cardiac function and emotion first became associated is a fair question and the answer lies in our response to stress. So what happens to those feelings when we find ourselves in a constant state of stress and social proximity is a health hazard? If the complex physiology of being in love is closely related to being stressed out, could simplifying that understanding be the key to maintaining our personal and social stability? Understanding the Anatomy of Our Emotions We often mistakenly think of our brains as purely rational organs of cortical and higher functions. In fact, significant areas in our brains are not governed by linear processes often ascribed to cortical function, but rather, they operate in a more ambiguous manner driven by exchanges of hormones and neurotransmitters that can evoke emotions like fear , … [Read more...] about Is It COVID Stress or Is It Love?

Kaley Cuoco Spoke About The Emotional Moment She And Johnny Galecki Found Out Jim Parsons Was Leaving “Big Bang Theory”
Kaley Cuoco has enjoyed a pretty massive career so far and, of course, it's largely due to her standout role in The Big Bang Theory . The CBS sitcom was huge and thrust its leading stars into the mainstream spotlight. It was so successful that the cast were even able to negotiate a million-dollar-per-episode payout from season eight onwards. Reflecting on the role of a lifetime in a recent interview with Variety, Cuoco said she didn't know how to react after signing her first big-money contract with the show, leaving her and costar Johnny Galecki stunned. And from the very beginning, Cuoco explained that she felt equal to her male costars in terms of pay, something which "set a standard" for the star moving forwards. "I knew that I was equal to them from day one," she said. "And that was never questioned in my experience with Big Bang — which I will always appreciate, because it set a standard for me." However, it all had to come to an end at … [Read more...] about Kaley Cuoco Spoke About The Emotional Moment She And Johnny Galecki Found Out Jim Parsons Was Leaving “Big Bang Theory”
Texas Bishop Warns Equality Act ‘Threatens the Heart of Our Nation’
Bishop Joseph Strickland of Tyler Texas warned late Wednesday the Equality Act is destructive legislation that would do untold damage to the country if passed. “The Equality Act being considered in Congress is a threat to people of faith in this nation,” Bishop Strickland said on Twitter. “I urge all who believe in God and the truth of His Divine Revelation to speak up and let their members of Congress and Senators know that this bill threatens the heart of our nation.” The bishop’s appeal dovetails with a recent summons by leaders of the U.S. Bishops’ Conference (USCCB) for Congress to reject the proposed legislation, insisting it would demolish “precious rights to life and conscience.” Writing to members of the U.S. Congress, the bishops warned the Equality Act would “discriminate against people of faith” and “inflict numerous legal and social harms on Americans.” Biden's HUD is charting a new course, including catering to LGBTQ supporters through discrimination cases … [Read more...] about Texas Bishop Warns Equality Act ‘Threatens the Heart of Our Nation’

Switching to Android: iOS 14 may look great, but Android launchers still put it to shame
Battle of the widgets Activating launchers, theme packs, and widgets felt as transformative as the world turning to color in Pleasantville . Michael L Hicks 25 Feb 2021 5 Source: Android Central As part of my Switching to Android journey, I'm documenting the differences between the two operating systems, exploring the Android features that you might take for granted, but that iOS users may find a compelling reason to switch sides. My first couple of days with Android 11 and One UI 3.1 underwhelmed me. I successfully transferred my compatible iOS apps over, and there they sat as plain little circles or rounded squares, crowded in on one another. In particular, my Pixel 3a icons looked insubstantial, the display so cramped that several app names ended in ellipses (i.e., Google P...). Bad aesthetics didn't exactly make me enthusiastic about the transition. Before iOS 14, iPhone users happily lived with the same aesthetics and similar UI for … [Read more...] about Switching to Android: iOS 14 may look great, but Android launchers still put it to shame
