Caesars to buy William Hill for US$3.7 billion in sports-betting drive
REUTERS: U.S. casino operator Caesars Entertainment agreed on Wednesday to buy British-based gambling group William Hill for 2.9 billion pounds (US$3.7 billion) to expand in the fast-growing U.S. sports-betting market. The U.S. group, owner of Las Vegas's Caesars Palace, intends to sell William Hill's non-U.S. operations, including more than 1,400 UK betting shops, and said it would integrate the U.S. business into Caesars with few, if any, job losses. It could sell the UK assets to private equity group Apollo , sources told Reuters this week, and if that failed, launch an auction process. Shares in William Hill, which already offers sports betting in Caesars casinos in the United States, hit a two-year high of 312 pence on Friday after the British company said it had received separate takeover offers from Caesars and Apollo. With the board backing the deal with Caesars, market pricing now indicates investors expect the 272 pence per share takeover by the U.S. company to go … [Read more...] about Caesars to buy William Hill for US$3.7 billion in sports-betting drive

F1: Hamilton a fantastic ambassador, deserves a knighthood, says Hill
LONDON: Lewis Hamilton has been breaking down barriers since he arrived in Formula One and deserves a knighthood for his achievements on and off the track, former world champion Damon Hill has said. Hamilton, the most successful grand prix racer of all time and the only black driver in F1, sealed a record-equalling seventh world title with his victory in Turkey this month, fuelling expectations of a knighthood. The 35-year-old Briton, who comes from an under-privileged, multi-racial background, has used his platform to campaign for racial equality, diversity and sustainability. "Lewis has always been breaking down barriers, the moment he arrived in F1 or even in karting he was breaking barriers and challenging the status quo," the Guardian quoted Hill as saying. "The knighthood will be seen as recognition of not just his driving but also as a black driver that has bust another door open for anyone who is not white. "He has destroyed the preconception that it can't be done, … [Read more...] about F1: Hamilton a fantastic ambassador, deserves a knighthood, says Hill

Mum gifted year’s supply of free milk after pushing massive lorry up hill in snow
A KIND-HEARTED mum who pushed a LORRY up a snow-covered hill has been gifted a year's supply of free milk as a thank you. Charlene Leslie, was filmed giving a Graham’s milk truck a helping hand in Cowdenbeath, Fife, as Storm Darcy brought heavy snow and the coldest temperatures for 26 years. The mum of three, originally from Edinburgh, went viral after footage emerged online. Speaking today, Charlene said she knows the stunt was dangerous but she couldn't stand by while the HGV struggled through the flurries. She said: “I would never just stand by when I see someone in trouble. I suppose what I did was really dangerous, but thankfully the Graham’s truck got safely up the hill. "In the moment I wasn't really thinking about me, I just wanted to help." Charlene was heading to a local shop with two of her three children, Rihanna, 10 and two-year-old Hunter as well as husky dog, Alaska, when she spotted a car in trouble in Cowdenbeath high street. Exeter lock Hill to make England debut v Italy
LONDON: Exeter's Jonny Hill will make his England debut against Italy on Saturday after coach Eddie Jones named him as lock partner to Maro Itoje for the game in Rome where the Six Nations title is at stake. Scrumhalf Ben Youngs will win his 100th cap, inside captain and flyhalf Owen Farrell. In the absence of the injured Manu Tuilagi, Jones has opted for the creative centre pairing of Henry Slade and Jonathan Joseph, with George Furbank at fullback in place of injured Elliot Daly. After much speculation about his backrow options, Jones has returned to the trio who performed so well in the World Cup, with Sam Underhill and Tom Curry flanking Billy Vunipola, making his first appearance since the final defeat by South Africa a year ago this week. Hooker Jamie George will win his 50th cap. There are three uncapped players on the bench - hooker Tom Dunn, centre Ollie Lawrence and winger Ollie Thorley, while Dan Robson is the backup scrumhalf. England will hope to beat Italy with … [Read more...] about Exeter lock Hill to make England debut v Italy
Commentary: The incredible resurrection of state capitalism in China
SYDNEY: While state sectors remain significant in the economies of many countries, China’s state-owned enterprises (SOEs) continue to generate the most controversy. Key commentators have noted that Chinese state capitalism has continued to strengthen since the launch of a new stage of SOE reforms in the Third Plenum of the 18th Party Congress in November 2013. This has provoked discussions on the need for revamping the rules of the WTO, which is now a central issue in the ongoing US-China trade war and subsequent negotiations. READ: The end of the WTO? Why China dropped a dispute against the US, EU, a commentary CHINA'S SOE REFORMS As an integral element of China’s economic reforms launched in 1979, SOE reform has come a long way. Whispering Hills, the mod that brings Silent Hill to Fallout 4, gets its first episode
Whispering Hills is a Fallout 4 mod that adds a whole lot of fog and a variety of familiar monsters to the Commonwealth. While an earlier version of it has been around for a while—we've been writing about it since Jon said no thanks to the Sirenhead update in 2019 —the Episode 1 update brings some significant additions. Chiefly, a questline to follow complete with a voiced NPC. Said questline will introduce you to Midwitch Elementary School (based on the original Silent Hill's school, Midwich), and part of the town of Whispering Hills. It's based on Centralia, the town used as the model for Silent Hill in the movie, and the mod apparently uses laser-scanning data to recreate the town's map. When Fallout 4 decides to change the weather there's a chance for the foggy town to be replaced by Silent Hill's dark nightmare world, and even more of its monsters. As for those monsters, Whispering Hills includes Silent Hill mainstays like Triangular Prism Head, Uncomfortably Sexy … [Read more...] about Whispering Hills, the mod that brings Silent Hill to Fallout 4, gets its first episode
