MORTON GROVE, Ill. (CBS) — The mayor of Morton Grove was not holding back Wednesday about the ban on indoor dining that Gov. JB Pritzker has imposed on suburban Cook County – as well as all the rest of the Chicago metro area – due to a surge in COVID-19 cases. Morton Grove Mayor Daniel DiMaria fired off a letter to Gov. Pritzker about the plan. RELATED: Republicans Mock Illinois House Democrats: Meet The New Rules, Same As Old Ones The letter says in part: “Let me be blunt. Your recent order to close indoor service in bars and restaurants is an unnecessary, heavy-handed deathblow to these businesses and must be reconsidered.” DiMaria wrote that when the state closed bars and restaurants across the board last month, many business owners were unable to make rent and payments and lost their life savings. But he wrote that some businesses began to see relief – first with outdoor service and then with limited indoor dining – as more was learned about the virus. He noted … [Read more...] about Morton Grove Mayor Fires Off Letter To Gov. Pritzker, Questions Why Bars And Restaurants Must Stop Indoor Dining Over COVID-19

Suranne Jones poses in shed and Samantha Morton goes ‘topless’ as nominees bring red-carpet glamour to their homes and gardens for glitzy online shoot by Rankin ahead of virtual BAFTA TV Awards
There is no red carpet this year – just patio furniture and even a garden shed. But the fact that the BAFTA nominees face spending UK television's glitziest night stuck in their homes has not stopped them dressing to the nines. Suranne Jones, Samantha Morton and Glenda Jackson were among stars posing for a shoot by photographer Rankin ahead of tomorrow's virtual ceremony. And incredibly, virus restrictions meant it was all done without the snapper even visiting their homes. Instead, the 53-year-old took the portraits through video calls set up by the thespians in their houses. Miss Jones, 41, up for leading actress for her role in ITV's Gentleman Jack, chose a cluttered garden shed as her backdrop. But her sharp white suit added a touch of glamour to the proceedings – as did the Bafta award next to her, which she won in 2016 for her role in Dr Foster. Meanwhile her rival for leading actress, Miss Morton, struck a rather more risque pose. The 43-year-old, who played a single … [Read more...] about Suranne Jones poses in shed and Samantha Morton goes ‘topless’ as nominees bring red-carpet glamour to their homes and gardens for glitzy online shoot by Rankin ahead of virtual BAFTA TV Awards
Rick Morton, Alice Pung, Stan Grant, Anita Heiss and others: the books to look forward to in 2021
E very year brings an abundance of delectable new titles to cram your bookshelf but 2021 promises to be an especially fruitful one, considering that many books scheduled for release this year were delayed due to Covid-19, and hence pushed back for publication in 2021. Here’s a curated list of just a few of the many Australian books to look forward to. Fiction Michael Mohammed Ahmad bounced on to the literary scene with the ferociously passionate The Tribe. His pugilistic follow-up, The Lebs, was further evidence that he’s a writer utterly unafraid to rip apart the strictures of ethnic stereotypes. The Other Half of You (June, Hachette) may reveal a softer side. As his publisher puts it: “This deeply moving story passed from father to son will break hearts and then mend them all over again”. Ever since her sparkling debut, her memoir Unpolished Gem, Alice Pung has worked across essays, nonfiction, middle-grade fiction and young adult fiction. One Hundred Days (June, … [Read more...] about Rick Morton, Alice Pung, Stan Grant, Anita Heiss and others: the books to look forward to in 2021
It’s a Long story!
Anaesthesiology, anaesthesia or anaesthetics is the branch of medical science that focusses on and specialises in pain relief for patients, both during and after surgery. It was in the 1840s that the pain-numbing capacities of certain substances were observed and documented, laying down the foundations of this medical speciality that now not only encompasses anaesthesia and pain medicine, but also intensive care and critical emergency medicine. Who gets the credit? There is no clarity, however, as to who exactly needs to be credited with the discovery of anaesthesia. There is American physician and geologist Charles T. Jackson, who is believed to have made the suggestion to compatriot William Thomas Green Morton to use sulphuric ether as an anaesthetic. Morton’s successful demonstration of the utility of ether as an anaesthetic took place in 1846 and was pivotal in winning over the public’s confidence. American dentist Horace Wells is said to have independently conceived the idea … [Read more...] about It’s a Long story!
Where is Harlots filmed? Filming locations for the BBC series including a country manor
BBC 's Harlots has viewers gripped thanks to the enthralling drama, plot twists, and dark humour. Set in Georgian London, the show follows the rivalry of Madams Margaret Wells ( Samantha Morton ) and Lydia Quigley ( Lesley Manville ), as they run their competing brothels and try to attract the city's finest gentlemen. When it first aired the show ran for three series, but it's currently back on BBC Two. Although the show is set in 18th century London, it wasn't actually filmed in the English capital. Instead, the bulk of filming took place at Langleybury Mansion , located northwest outside of Watford. The grandiose house dates back to the 1720s, and boasts its own farm and sprawling estate - meaning there were ample spots for filming scenes in Harlots. Some of the property is decrepit, which were used for shots set in Greek Street and scenes with the Wells family. However, some of the elegant rooms downstairs are still in great condition, which made them the … [Read more...] about Where is Harlots filmed? UK Sport to focus on 12-year medal potential
REUTERS: UK Sport plans to change its funding model after next year's rescheduled Tokyo Olympics with the focus on medal potential over a 12-year period instead of four, the body's Chief Operating Officer Simon Morton has said. Speaking at the Westminster Media Forum, Morton said the new model for funding elite sports would apply for Paris 2024 and beyond. "Previously, for those that know the system, we considered sports based on their medal potential within four years," Morton was quoted as saying by the BBC. "Subject to affordability, our new strategy will allow us to consider sports based on their medal potential within 12 years. That's a big shift. "So our strategy is still focused on creating medal-winning moments ... but it's a more progressive approach that recognises that broader success requires us to reach far deeper into the pathway." Morton said that future funding decisions would reflect an enhanced integrity system, more athlete support and better provision … [Read more...] about UK Sport to focus on 12-year medal potential

Lawyers for the Queen ‘lobbied to change law and hide her wealth’
Lawyers for the Queen lobbied ministers to alter a draft law so that her private wealth could be kept secret, newly-uncovered records have suggested. Legislation was changed so that any 'potentially embarrassing' investments she held could be concealed from the public, it was alleged. The incident, which happened almost 50 years ago during the premiership of Edward Heath but was unearthed by The Guardian last night, is one of the rare examples of behind-the-scenes political involvement from the monarchy. Her Majesty's lawyers are said to have pressed ministers into altering measures in a planned Companies Bill. This would have allowed directors to demand that front companies holding their shares reveal the identities of the real owners of the shares.
