That Dress: Fashion shoot by Indigenous artists sparks trauma, apologies—and reflection

A two-year-old photo shoot with a Cree model wearing an Anishinaabe designer’s dress that was dedicated to missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls (MMIWG) has ignited pain and trauma, and raised thorny questions for Indigenous women’s advocates. The images were posted to social media last week by Enoch Cree Nation member Ashley Callingbull. They were from a 2019 Toronto Fashion Week shoot. Anishinaabe designer Lesley Hampton, a member of Temagami First Nation, said she hoped to send a strong message about MMIWG. Both the model and the designer, who also advocate on Indigenous women’s issues, have apologized to families who called the images disrespectful. Some of the critics said whatever good intentions were behind the photo shoot or the dress design — which featured hundreds of red dots on a sheer fabric — it only triggered more trauma for them. Some remarked on social media the red dots, which Hampton said were meant to represent missing or murdered Indigenous women, … [Read more...] about That Dress: Fashion shoot by Indigenous artists sparks trauma, apologies—and reflection

Doctor who filmed nurse in toilet suspended from practice for 4 months

SINGAPORE: A doctor who filmed a nurse while she was using a toilet has been suspended from practice for four months by a disciplinary tribunal. Dr Lum Yang Wei placed his mobile phone under the door of a handicapped toilet at a hospital and filmed the nurse on Feb 19, 2016, said the tribunal's grounds of decision on Thursday (Jul 2). He took the video while the nurse was relieving herself, causing her to panic, said the tribunal. She remained hidden in the toilet for a period of time because she was afraid the person filming her was still in the area, it added. Dr Lum later admitted to the police that he had taken two videos of the victim on that day. He also said that he started taking such videos during his previous job at another hospital. Dr Lum was charged on May 29, 2017, with insulting the woman’s modesty and later sentenced to six weeks’ jail. He completed his housemanship on Feb 28, 2019 after his release from prison and was offered employment at a hospital, … [Read more...] about Doctor who filmed nurse in toilet suspended from practice for 4 months

Commentary: South Korea has pulled off a stunning coronavirus turnaround

CANBERRA: Worldwide demand for South Korea’s “drive-thru” COVID-19 test kits and other precision contact tracing methods boosted the country’s image as a leading global health care and technology powerhouse. Early success in managing the pandemic also gave South Korean voters more confidence in President Moon Jae-in’s administration. On Apr 15, Moon’s public approval rating reached a 17-month high of 54.4 per cent and his Democratic Party won a landslide victory in the parliamentary elections. The election victory was partly a matter of luck. Moon’s leadership began to shine during the COVID-19 crisis, especially by swaying public opinion toward his administration’s all-out campaign for pandemic management. Until then, he had faced a lame-duck situation, with a record-low public approval rating of 39 per cent, partly due to the Cho Kuk scandal . He presided over South Korea’s slowest economic growth in decades and stalled nuclear talks with North Korea. It would be a Friday, mid-afternoon, and Wilson would be road-tripping to see his quarterback tutor, John Beck, in southern California. On these trips, Wilson alternated between podcasts and an audiobook. (Steve Young’s lessons of the benefits of adversity in “ QB: My Life Behind the Spiral ” resonated strongly.) Wilson put his body on mind-clearing autopilot, driving through southwest Utah, skirting through 28 miles of northwest Arizona, then into the Pacific Time Zone, through the Vegas sprawl in southern Nevada, into the High Desert of southeastern California, into the SoCal ‘burbs and crashing at the home of … [Read more...] about FMIA: New Insight On NFL’s 17-Game Schedule.
