COVID-19: Slovakia mired in chaos

The coalition wanted to clean up the "mafia state," to be a government for the people, to create justice and transparency. Just shy of a year ago, a coalition headed by Igor Matovic, an anti-corruption and political activist, came to power in Slovakia . It faced quite a challenge — dismantling former Prime Minister Robert Fico's corrupt, mafia-style system with its close ties between politics and organized crime. The coalition also took office in the middle of the first coronavirus lockdown. The government's record is largely disappointing. As far as the coronavirus crisis is concerned, it has been downright disastrous: Slovakia is currently experiencing one of the worst health emergencies in Europe, largely due to the Matovic government's chaotic management. The country tops the list of European virus deaths per million inhabitants and patients hospitalized with COVID-19. In terms of infection rates, Slovakia currently ranks third in Europe after the Czech Republic and Estonia. … [Read more...] about COVID-19: Slovakia mired in chaos

Surviving and Thriving the Pandemic Indoors Again

Our first take at social distancing: when kids were off school for weeks and telework took hold. Then came summer, a bit of a reprieve outdoors. Now, back indoors. We've seen what happens with siblings together 24/7, hardly any sports to watch, canceled trips and school activities a no-go. First it was boredom, bickering, and too many fearful headlines. Now: school/work collide again amid more troubling headlines and an election. To thrive, not merely survive, this pandemic in its varying stages, one needs to work on resiliency, connection, and forced interludes of plain fun. Board games provide social skills. Coloring and card decks relaxation and reflection. Source: Loriann Oberlin, MS, LCPC Stream with a theme. Yes, kids still want to zone out after school. Parents may need the reprieve television affords as they catch up on work. However, when adults guide what goes on the screen, advantages outweigh mindless binge-watching. Look at your streaming choices as … [Read more...] about Surviving and Thriving the Pandemic Indoors Again

Chaos at US airports as COVID-19 medical screenings jam up returning Americans

WASHINGTON: Chaos gripped major US airports on Sunday (Mar 15) as Americans returning from coronavirus-hit European countries overwhelmed authorities attempting to process the surge. Frustrated passengers complained of hours-long lines, crowded and unsanitary conditions and general disarray in the system for screening people for symptoms of the virus. "Very close quarters," Ann Lewis Schmidt told CNN, describing conditions at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport. "So if we didn't have the virus before, we have a great chance of getting it now!" Schmidt said. US airports have been hit with a flood of Americans, many of them students, since restrictions on travel from Europe ordered by US President Donald Trump took effect at midnight on Friday. The airport bottlenecks were the latest evidence of continuing turbulence in the administration's response to a pandemic that started in China in December and has since spread worldwide. On Sunday, the president reacted to news of … [Read more...] about Chaos at US airports as COVID-19 medical screenings jam up returning Americans

Three things to know: It’s been a year and Leon Rose has Knicks thriving

The NBA season is in full swing, and we will be here each weekday with the NBC Sports daily roundup Three Things to Know — everything you might have missed in the Association, every key moment from the night before in one place. 1) One one-year anniversary of taking over, Leon Rose has Knicks thriving If the playoffs started today, the four-seed New York Knicks would host a series at Madison Square Garden. If you had made that statement one year ago today — the day Leon Rose took over as Knicks president of basketball operations — you would have been quickly reminded that New York has not legalized that stuff yet. Maybe Rose would work out in a position where so many others had failed (or been cut off at the knees by James Dolan when they succeeded), but turning around this ship was expected to take several years. No, it didn’t. The Knicks are over .500 on March 1 for the first time since 2013 (the last time they made the playoffs). The Knicks just finished a 9-5 February … [Read more...] about Three things to know: It’s been a year and Leon Rose has Knicks thriving

Hong Kong leader says city cannot tolerate any more ‘chaos’

HONG KONG: Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam warned on Tuesday (Jun 9) the city could not afford further "chaos" as it marked the first anniversary of the start of rolling mass protests. More than a million people flooded the streets a year ago to protest a Bill by Lam's government that would have allowed people to be extradited to mainland China, where courts are controlled by the Communist Party, for trial. "All of us can see the difficulty we have been through in the past year, and due to such serious situations we have more problems to deal with," Lam said during her weekly media conference, which coincided with the … [Read more...] about Hong Kong leader says city cannot tolerate any more ‘chaos’

Philippines tries transport test run to prepare for commuter chaos

MANILA: Police in the Philippine capital did a dry run on Tuesday (May 26) of measures to enforce social distancing on public transport and control the spread of coronavirus, a tricky task in a densely populated city known for its commuting chaos. More than 500 police trainees in Manila posed as rail passengers in an exercise to manage hundreds of thousands of people once public transportation eventually resumes, having being closed for nearly 11 weeks. Cadets in jeans, white T-shirts and face visors marched up the stairs of a light rail transit (LRT) station before joining orderly queues to platforms and filing slowly into spacious train carriages. "From early morning up to late at night there is always a line of passengers waiting to ride a train. We are doing this simulation to better prepare for the smooth operations of the LRT," said Metropolitan Manila police chief Debold Sinas. On a normal day, millions are on the move in and around Manila, pushing transport networks … [Read more...] about Philippines tries transport test run to prepare for commuter chaos

‘Jewel will shine again. Changi will thrive again’: S’pore will prosper anew after Covid-19 crisis, says PM Lee

SINGAPORE - Covid-19 has halted four decades of work that made Changi Airport and Singapore Airlines world-beating institutions, but Singaporeans can be confident that they will thrive again, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said in Parliament on Wednesday (Sept 2). While the pandemic may be a monumental test of the nation's spirit, Singapore will emerge stronger and more united than before, PM Lee pledged as he delivered his rallying call during the debate on the President's Address. Recalling Singapore's difficult birth, Mr Lee said the country had faced each major storm since - such as the Asian Financial Crisis and Global Financial Crisis - not knowing whether it would survive. "Each time, the dire circumstances became the occasion and the platform for ambition and daring, and each time, we transcended ourselves and built again," he said at the end of his speech on Singapore's response to the present crisis that has severely crippled the aviation and tourism sectors as well as … [Read more...] about ‘Jewel will shine again. Chaos reigns as CoWIN keeps shutting down

New Delhi: The excitement for getting vaccinated on Day 1 of the third phase of massive immunization drive turned into a chaos after the CoWIN portal kept shutting down intermittently while processing the inoculation exercise, several hospitals complained while speaking to IANS. It resulted into hours long delay for those who came early for registration on-site and even those who self-registered through the portal. Many hospitals like Moolchand closed walk-in registration as early as 1 p.m. to control the crowd waiting for their turn to get inoculated against the novel Coronavirus. Madhu Handa, Medical Superintendent at south Delhi-based Moolchand Hospital said that the CoWIN portal is crashing every now and then. Many alleged that they were not told that the vaccination would start from 12 noon. Jaswinder Singh from Gurugram, who brought along his father and father-in-law to Moolchand Hospital said that he has been waiting for over two hours. My parents are above … [Read more...] about Chaos reigns as CoWIN keeps shutting down

Football: Fernandes, Pogba can thrive in United midfield, says Solskjaer

LONDON: Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes playmaker Bruno Fernandes and record signing Paul Pogba can form a strong midfield partnership when the Premier League season resumes following the COVID-19 disruption. The 25-year-old Fernandes, who joined United from Sporting Lisbon in January, registered three goals and four assists in nine matches, adding creativity to the team with Pogba out of action due to a foot injury. Pogba, restricted to eight appearances in all competitions this season, was primed to return before the campaign was suspended due to the coronavirus outbreak and Solskjaer said the Frenchman and Fernandes can thrive. "Good players can always play together, so definitely they can... it's a big yes," Solskjaer told Sky Sports. "I've got Scott (McTominay), Fred, Nemanja (Matic). There are many games coming up. I'm sure we can find a good connection between them. We've been discussing that as a coaching team and we're looking forward to it. … [Read more...] about Football: Fernandes, Pogba can thrive in United midfield, says Solskjaer

COVID-19: Ricciardo expects a bit of chaos when F1 returns

LONDON: Daniel Ricciardo cannot wait for Formula One to get back to racing in a COVID-19 blighted season, and when it does he reckons the first grand prix could be a recipe for chaos. The Australian, isolating in Perth since his home race in Melbourne was cancelled in March, has not driven his Renault since the last day of testing in Barcelona at the end of February. Formula One plans to get going in Austria, pandemic permitting, with two races at the Red Bull Ring from the start of July. Ricciardo told the BBC on Saturday (May 9) he expected "some form of chaos, hopefully in a controlled manner" because all the drivers had been out of action, at least on the real racetrack rather than virtual, for so long. "I am not really referencing cars everywhere. But there is going to be so much rust, a combination of emotion, excitement, eagerness," the 30-year-old said. "Everyone is going to be ready to go. You are going to get some guys who perform on that level of adrenaline and … [Read more...] about COVID-19: Ricciardo expects a bit of chaos when F1 returns
