Teaching Classic Lit Helps Game Designers Make Better Stories
“The language I’ve invented is pronounced with the same phonetics as Latin,” explained Justin Harlan, my 21-year-old student. He was doing a presentation on his video game Ordenai , which was so outstanding that it left my boisterous class speechless. This was in the fall of 2019, my first semester teaching Creative Writing for Video Gamers at Lawrence Technological University (LTU) in Southfield, Michigan. This was a class I created, with the help of other faculty, and a prerequisite for those majoring in video game design. Awestruck at the scope of Harlan’s game, I noticed several elements readily found in classic literature that were intimately woven into his story. This helped me realize that appreciating classic literature and art could enhance not only the creation of video games but the player’s experience as well. The first thing that wowed me about Harlan’s work was the intricate web he wove. He created an entire world, replete with 349 words of his invention, enough … [Read more...] about Teaching Classic Lit Helps Game Designers Make Better Stories

Infineon says can meet chip demand with help of new Austria plant
Infineon said on Thursday it was expanding its production capacity to help address global supply shortages and would be able to meet the needs of its customers in the long term. CEO Reinhard Ploss said Infineon's new plant in Villach, Austria, due to open in late summer, would be capable of producing enough power semiconductors each year to equip the drive trains of 25 million electric vehicles. A semiconductor supply crunch has forced carmakers like Volkswagen , Ford and General Motors to idle production after the chip market was swept clean by demand for higher-margin consumer electronics. Analysts say that supply of automotive products like microcontrollers will remain tight until mid-year as chipmakers adjust to demand that has snapped back since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic last spring. Infineon rode out last year's turbulence relatively well by building inventory. But it has faced challenges because - like its competitors - it outsources a share … [Read more...] about Infineon says can meet chip demand with help of new Austria plant
Multilingual e-commerce platform to help China’s ethnic farmers in foreign trade
Video Player Close LANZHOU, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- A multilingual e-commerce platform, available in Chinese, Uygur, Tibetan, Mongolian and English, selling China's distinctive agricultural products has begun its trial run. The platform has been developed by Yu Hongzhi, a professor at Northwest Minzu University located in Gansu Province, and her team. Targeting Belt and Road countries, the platform is expected to facilitate cross-border trade for farmers from various ethnic groups and help more local specialties go global, according to the developers. Shining light on the platform's advantages, Yu said fruit farmers from Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, for instance, could upload the information about Hami melon, the region's popular specialty, onto the platform in Uygur, and English-speaking consumers could instantly browse its English version. School days could be lengthened and holidays shortened to help kids catch up
School days may be lengthened and holidays shortened to let pupils catch up, Gavin Williamson hinted today. The Education Secretary confirmed he is looking at “the whole expanse” of options to help left-behind children. He announced a short-term, £300m ‘recovery premium’ for catch-up schemes - worth about £6,000 for primaries and £22,000 for secondaries on average. Mr Williamson stopped short of confirming his long-term plans as all pupils return to schools in England on March 8. But questioned by Sky, he refused to rule out either lengthening the school day or shortening the summer break. A government source indicated the two options would be considered by Sir Kevan Collins, the Government's new catch up tsar, as part of a new review. And asked about the two options, Mr Williamson said: “We’re looking at a whole range of different actions. “What we wanted to do was give schools the extra resources they needed to be able to take action immediately. “Some of the … [Read more...] about School days could be lengthened and holidays shortened to help kids catch up
How coronavirus stimulus funds helped one state create a ‘broadband miracle’
This story is part of Crossing the Broadband Divide , CNET's coverage of how the country is working toward making broadband access universal. When Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann and lawmakers in the Mississippi legislature got $1.2 billion in federal money from the first stimulus bill in March, they decided to do something different. They used a portion of the funds to supercharge the rollout of high-speed broadband to the most underserved areas of the state in an effort to close the digital divide. They went to rural electric co-ops -- private, independent electric utilities owned by the members they serve -- many of which were left gobsmacked by the offer, according to David O'Bryan, general manager of Delta Electric Power Association, which now serves Carroll and Grenada counties with broadband. Many of these co-ops had been preparing to deploy networks but lacked the cash to begin a major project, especially in the most remote and sparsely populated parts of their territories. … [Read more...] about How coronavirus stimulus funds helped one state create a ‘broadband miracle’

Online services help drive car dealer Inchcape’s profit beat, bring back dividend
Inchcape on Thursday posted a better-than-expected full-year profit and resumed its annual dividend, as online services help it continue delivering vehicles at a time when the pandemic has forced car showrooms to stay shut. The company, which operates in around 30 markets, said it expects significant growth in profits and higher operating margin in 2021, if there are no severe pandemic-related restrictions. Inchcape was able to deliver vehicles, offer a "click-and-collect" service and continue to perform after-sales services through most of the pandemic, which helped its performance pick up mostly in the second half of last year, it said. The company, which sells new and used cars along with car parts, proposed an annual divided of 6.9 pence per share. The global health crisis has added to the troubles of UK car dealers, which were already facing muted demand and pressured margins following Britain's decision to leave the European Union . Pre-exceptional pretax profit … [Read more...] about Online services help drive car dealer Inchcape’s profit beat, bring back dividend
