France tells Airbus to minimize compulsory job cuts

PARIS: The French government urged Airbus on Wednesday to make as few compulsory redundancies as possible after the European aircraft maker announced it was culling 15,000 posts in Europe to survive the coronavirus crisis. Junior Transport Minister Jean-Baptiste Djebbari said the government estimated 2,000 of the planned 5,000 cuts in France could be saved through a long-term reduced-work scheme and because of government investment in next-generation green jets. "The state urges Airbus to ensure that there are as few forced redundancies as possible," Djebbari told BFM TV. "Airbus faces a very difficult period ahead. The state stands beside Airbus, and beside Air France." Djebbari confirmed Air France planned to shed nearly 7,600 jobs in a restructuring to be announced this week, including 1,000 at its regional unit Hop! The figure was presented at a company meeting on Tuesday, he said. The French government has agreed state aid worth 7 billion euros (US$7.9 billion) for … [Read more...] about France tells Airbus to minimize compulsory job cuts

EU says card fee curbs are working, retailers want more

BRUSSELS: Caps on the fees retailers pay to process debit and credit card transactions have helped push down prices, EU antitrust regulators said on Monday, but merchants called for even tighter limits. The Interchange Fee Regulation (IFR), which was triggered by a lengthy battle between retailers and payments groups including Visa and Mastercard, limits debit card fees at 0.2 percent of the transaction value and credit card fees at 0.3per cent of the transaction value. "Interchange fees for consumer cards have decreased, leading to reduced merchants' charges for card payments, and ultimately resulting in improved services to consumers and lower consumer prices," the European Commission said in a report. But retailers said loopholes in the IFR meant card payment companies could still impose hefty fees on some transactions, hurting shops and other businesses already struggling with the economic aftermath of COVID-19. "Nearly 80per cent of card transactions in Europe are … [Read more...] about EU says card fee curbs are working, retailers want more

US to review tariffs on EU goods amid aircraft row

REUTERS: The United States is weighing its tariffs on European products and is considering changing rates for various products as part of the trading partners' aircraft dispute, according to a notice by the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative. "In connection with this review, the U.S. Trade Representative is considering modifying the list of products of certain current or former EU member States that currently are subject to additional duties," the filing posted late on Tuesday said. The review stems from the United States' dispute with the European Union involving Europe's Airbus and U.S. rival Boeing , it said. The World Trade Organization previously found the world's two largest planemakers received billions of dollars of unfair subsidies, and last year allowed the United States to levy tariffs on US$7.5 billion worth of EU goods, including aircraft, wines and cheese in response to Airbus subsidies deemed illegal. The notice, first reported by Bloomberg, was posted on … [Read more...] about US to review tariffs on EU goods amid aircraft row

Bayer close to glyphosate settlement worth US$8-10 billion: Handelsblatt

BERLIN: Bayer AG is close to agreeing a settlement worth US$8-10 billion over claims its glyphosate-based Roundup weedkiller causes cancer, German business daily Handelsblatt reported on Tuesday. The company's supervisory board was due to discuss and vote on the settlement, which includes a US$2 billion buffer for future claims, in the coming days, paper cited company and negotiating partner sources as saying. A spokesman for Bayer declined to comment on the report. Perry Weitz of Weitz & Luxenberg, one of the leading plaintiffs' firms involved in the Roundup litigation, also would not comment. The drugs and pesticides group, which said in May that talks were progressing, is keen to draw a line under the legal dispute, which it inherited via its US$63 billion takeover of Monsanto in 2018. In April, Bayer's management regained shareholder support for its handling of the litigation process. Bayer's shares rose 5.7per cent to 72.52 euros at 1045 GMT. Easy home recipe: LeVel33’s sea bass and beer malt ‘risotto’

For a light but satisfying meal, fish is a superb option – and it certainly doesn’t have to be boring. At craft brewery and restaurant LeVeL33, helmed by chef Archan Chan, one of the signature dishes is sea bass served atop beer malt “risotto”, incorporating components of the beer brewing process for a nutty flavour. Malt is simply germinated cereal grain, so when cooked risotto-style, it’s chewy and savoury. Paired with the meaty fish, it’s a match made in textural heaven. Here, Chef Archan shows us how to whip up a simpler, fuss-free version of this dish at home for some hearty comfort laced with finesse. READ: Stay home restaurant recipe: Blue Jasmine's Thai shrimp paste fried rice If you can’t get your hands on beer malt, you can always use pearl barley, which has a similar bite. And if you don’t have sea bass, any white fish you like will do just as well. No fennel bulb? No problem – a good substitute is celery or the stems of bok choy. Alternatively, order a … [Read more...] about Easy home recipe: LeVel33’s sea bass and beer malt ‘risotto’

Airlines urge regulators to extend airport slots waiver

PARIS: Airlines are urging aviation regulators to extend a waiver on airport slot rules as they struggle to overcome the coronavirus crisis, their main international body said on Tuesday. Authorities are being asked to suspend rules requiring airlines to use 80per cent of their airport slots or else forfeit the capacity, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) said. The waiver should be extended beyond the 2020-2021 winter season as demand remains weak and visibility low, IATA Chief Economist Brian Pearce said. Without a waiver, "connectivity to long-haul destinations will be at risk," he said.
