What data does TraceTogether collect?

SINGAPORE - The TraceTogether token and mobile phone app are used for contact tracing. They exchange short-distance Bluetooth signals with nearby users of the token or app to quickly track people exposed to confirmed Covid-19 cases. But what kind of data does TraceTogether collect? When signing up for TraceTogether, a random user ID (a string of numbers and letters) is generated and linked to the user's contact number and identification details, such as his name and NRIC number. These details are stored in a secure server, according to the TraceTogether website. The Ministry of Health (MOH) uses the identification details to contact the right person when necessary. When app or token users are near one another, their user IDs are exchanged in an encrypted and randomised form, and can be decrypted only by MOH. The encrypted Bluetooth data exchanged is stored in the app or token, and does not contain personal identifiable information. Bluetooth data older than 25 … [Read more...] about What data does TraceTogether collect?

You can collect your TraceTogether tokens at any of 108 CCs from Feb 1

SINGAPORE - From next Monday (Feb 1), the public can collect their TraceTogether tokens from any of the 108 community centres and clubs (CCs) in Singapore. Previously, collection was at selected CCs and people had to collect their tokens from the CCs in their own constituencies. More than 2.6 million tokens have been collected to date under the TraceTogether programme, which helps with tracing close contacts of confirmed Covid-19 patients so that they can be identified and quarantined quickly to limit the spread of the coronavirus in the community. At the end of October last year, 400,000 of the tokens had been collected. Existing token users can get their tokens replaced at the CCs if the batteries have run out or if the tokens are faulty, said the Smart Nation and Digital Government Office (SNDGO) in a Facebook post on Thursday. A token needs to be replaced if it has a blinking red light or when the light has stopped blinking. If the token has a green light that blinks … [Read more...] about You can collect your TraceTogether tokens at any of 108 CCs from Feb 1

PSLE results to be released on Nov 25, students to collect results in classrooms

SINGAPORE: The results of the 2020 Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) will be released next Wednesday (Nov 25) from 11am, said the Ministry of Education (MOE). Candidates will receive their results in their classrooms at their respective primary schools instead of gathered as a cohort in the school hall as in previous years, given the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, said the ministry in a press release on Wednesday. "We recognise that having the opportunity to collect their examination results in person is an important part of the educational journey, as it gives students the opportunity to be with their classmates and consult their teachers face-to-face on their next steps, if necessary," MOE added. Candidates collecting their results in school will be expected to observe safe management measures . "For PSLE students, given their younger age, one parent or guardian can accompany their child or ward to school to collect their PSLE results," said MOE. Transgender minister lauds ‘collective intelligence’ in Taiwan COVID-19 battle

TAIPEI: Taiwan's widely praised handling of the coronavirus was largely due to collective intelligence and transparency – besides masks and hand-washing – according to its digital minister Audrey Tang. The island of 24 million people has recorded about 620 COVID-19 cases and seven deaths, and never went into a full lockdown, instead using technology, contact tracing and 14-day quarantines for arrivals to limit the outbreak. READ: Forming an air travel bubble with Singapore – After Hong Kong, which destination could be next? From the outset – when posts about a mysterious pneumonia in Wuhan, China were circulated on a Taiwan online forum, to a mobile app built by a citizen to map availability of face masks – authorities worked with the community on solutions, Tang said. "The government does not have a procurement relationship with civic tech. Anyone who has a good idea can approach us – it is fundamental to co-creation," said Tang, a transgender woman who was appointed … [Read more...] about Transgender minister lauds ‘collective intelligence’ in Taiwan COVID-19 battle

Government gets tax-rich from oil sector, consumers bear brunt

Government is all set to walk away with the highest level of excise duty collection from the petroleum sector this year, even as fuel consumers continue to face persistent increase in petrol and diesel prices that has taken the retail prices to historic high levels across the country. In the nine month period of current fiscal ending December 31, 2020, Centre's excise duty collections from the petroleum sector has already touched Rs 2,35,811 crore-mark, much more than what it got in the full financial year 2019-20. At this pace, collections may well cross Rs 3 lakh crore for the very first time in FY21. Last fiscal, the Centre received Rs 2,23,057 crore as excise revenue from the petroleum sector. The numbers were even lower at Rs 2,14,369 crore in FY19. Only in FY17, excise collections remained firm at Rs 2,42,691 crore when the government raised excise duty taking advantage of low crude prices. Higher collections as taxes have come at a time when consumers are facing the … [Read more...] about Government gets tax-rich from oil sector, consumers bear brunt

Commentary: Invincible Liverpool look set to regain past glory

SINGAPORE: If you had told fans in England back in 1990 when Liverpool were celebrating an 18th league title that the club would go at least 30 years before lifting the trophy again, nobody would have believed it. The Reds had dominated English football all the way through the 1970s and 1980s, winning 11 domestic leagues and four European titles. They were a relentless machine. Such days look like they may be about to return. Liverpool are champions of Europe but the prize the Reds really want is the English Premier League title. Many think that after a wait of three decades this is their year, even though it is only November and there is still two-thirds of the season still to play. That is how impressive Liverpool are. It is not just the eight-point lead at the top of the table - teams have squandered similar leads in the past. It is not just the fact that they are evolving year after year. It is the belief that stands out. The confidence is almost visible especially at … [Read more...] about Commentary: Invincible Liverpool look set to regain past glory
