Source: AaronAmat/iStock Photo This post was written by Gia Marson, Ed.D. Eating to soothe our worries is a natural coping strategy in times of stress. And with the new variants of COVID-19 emerging, confusion over the rollout of vaccines, and intermittent stay-at-home orders limiting our options for managing anxiety , it’s no wonder that we’re looking to food as a source of comfort or reward now more than ever. But this coping mechanism may be putting you at risk. Here's how to prevent disordered eating or an eating disorder from becoming your pandemic takeaway. Certain foods can remind us of feeling safe and connected to people we love. They serve as a comforting or helpful temporary fix when we are troubled. Perhaps your doting grandmother brought over homemade chocolate chip cookies when you were upset as a child, and now, as an adult, you may crave them whenever you’re in a stressful situation. They Help Put Food on Your Table. Undocumented Farmworkers Should be Legal | Opinion

President Joe Biden called for immigration reform during his presidential campaign. Now that he is in office, it is time his administration and Congress act on behalf of undocumented farmworkers across the nation. In November 2019, the Farm Workforce Modernization Act was introduced. It passed in the House through a bipartisan effort but was then tabled due to the rise of COVID-19. The act will be voted on in Congress on or before March 12 . It addresses the plight of undocumented farmworkers who want legal protection to work in the United States. The initiative would provide migrant farmworkers a course of action to be legal. Many are undocumented and this wouldn't be the first time they pushed for legality in the U.S. Biden's plan for a pathway to citizenship have made the community hopeful. Passing the bill would give over a million agriculture workers a means to gain and renew a so-called Certified Agricultural Worker (CAW) status, which is a merit-based system … [Read more...] about They Help Put Food on Your Table. Coffee helps heart health? It’s more complicated than that

Two new studies about the impact of caffeine on heart health show that the evidence is mixed but the message is clear: everything in moderation. The first study, an analysis of 21,361 participants over 10 years, used a machine learning computer program to search for patterns between behaviours and risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), the umbrella term for conditions that include coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke and heart failure. While marital status, red meat intake and whole milk intake were all risk factors, they found that drinking coffee was most strongly associated with lowering the risk of heart failure (where the heart muscle stops pumping blood properly). Specifically, the research published in Circulation: Heart Failure found that drinking a cup or less a day made no difference, but two-to three coffees a day may lower the risk of heart failure by as much as 30 per cent. Investigators: We May Never Know What Happened to Malaysia Airlines Flight 370

See also: People Have Stopped Talking About the Missing Plane Speaking to reporters in Kuala Lumpur, Inspector General Khalid Abu Bakar said , "Investigations may go on and on and on. The plane's crew, including senior pilot Zaharie Ahmad Shah, 53 and his co-pilot Fariq Abdul Hamid, 27, continue to be under investigation, with Shah's flight simulator being pored over by the FBI. We Must Stop Famine Before it Starts | Opinion

Famine was almost a thing of the past. It has been nine years since famine was declared on the country level in Somalia in 2011. Before that, you'd have to go back 19 years to find another famine on such a large scale. Famine is a tragedy, but also a technical designation—one we hope to never use. An official declaration of famine means one in five families face extreme food shortages, more than one child in three is dangerously malnourished and six out of every 10,000 people die from hunger each day. Consider what it would mean for you to face those odds. Until recently, global hunger was on the decline, thanks to investments in agriculture, health and nutrition education, and increasingly effective humanitarian aid. After 2011, new early warning systems were developed to help predict famine and prevent mass tragedy. By and large, those approaches have worked—until now. Today four countries are on the brink of famine : Yemen, Burkina Faso, South Sudan and Nigeria. This isn't … [Read more...] about We Must Stop Famine Before it Starts | Opinion
