Early on in D-Wave's history, the company made bold claims about its quantum annealer outperforming algorithms run on traditional CPUs. Those claims turned out to be premature, as improvements to these algorithms pulled the traditional hardware back in front . Since then, the company has been far more circumspect about its performance claims, even as it brought out newer generations of hardware . But in the run-up to the latest hardware, the company apparently became a bit more interested in performance again. And it recently got together with Google scientists to demonstrate a significant boost in performance compared to a classical algorithm, with the gap growing as the problem became complex—although the company's scientists were very upfront about the prospects of finding a way to boost classical hardware further. Still, there are a lot of caveats even beyond that, so it's worth taking a detailed look at what the company did. Magnets, how do they flip? D-Wave's system is … [Read more...] about D-Wave’s hardware outperforms a classic computer

Petit Le Mans: WTR wins after leaders clash in final stint
Prototype Alexander Rossi in the Acura ARX-05 snatched the lead from Felipe Nasr’s Action Express Racing Cadillac DPi-V.R with 1hr42min to go but Nasr held on, hung tough, repassed for a split second at Turn 10B and went slightly long, allowing Rossi back ahead. Meanwhile when Dixon handed over the Wayne Taylor Racing Cadillac to Ryan Briscoe, the full-timer dropped it at Turn 10 which dropped him 25sec behind the lead battle. With 74mins to go, Nasr pitted to hand over to Derani, while Rossi stopped one lap later and left the wheel for Taylor. The pair emerged just 1.2sec apart, and Derani used his warmer tires to make the outside pass at Turn 10A and made it stick. However, these two remained within a second, regularly jockeying for position, especially in the Turn 10 brake zone, the Cadillac appearing stronger through the curves, and the Acura stronger in a straight line. Meanwhile, van der Zande was chipping away at the pair of them… Taylor followed Derani into … [Read more...] about Petit Le Mans: WTR wins after leaders clash in final stint
Drago Corse seals Super GT grid spot with new backer
The presence of the team owned by 2000 GT500 champion Ryo Michigami on the GT300 grid was thrown into doubt last month when Honda's announcement of its plans for the 2021 season made no mention of Drago and its solo NSX GT3. It followed the withdrawal of Modulo's sponsorship, with the Honda subsidiary scaling back its support to just the Nakajima Racing GT500 entry for this year. However, Drago has been able to secure a new sponsor in the form of sofa and cushion company Yogibo, and will return with Michigami and Shogo Mitsuyama sharing driving duties at the wheel of the team's Yokohama-shod NSX. Mitsuyama, who last raced full time in SUPER GT in 2016 for Team Taisan SARD, replaces Australian racer Jake Parsons as Michigami's teammate. #34 Modulo KENWOOD NSX GT3 Photo by: GTA Misato Haga, who previously ran the Direxiv team in the mid-2000s and headed up MOLA's 2008 GT300 title-winning team, has come on board as team director. Incidentally, Mitsuyama previously … [Read more...] about Drago Corse seals Super GT grid spot with new backer
Qualcomm and Sophos strike cybersecurity deal that highlights benefits of 5G and AI in PCs
In context: One of the big questions that some people have had about integrating cellular connections into PCs is what exactly are those connections going to do? Or, to put it another way, some have wondered, what’s the point? There are several important capabilities you can gain with an always connected PC, but a newly announced deal between Qualcomm and Sophos puts an interesting new twist on those opportunities. The two companies announced that an Arm-compatible version of the Sophos Intercept X cybersecurity software application will be available on Snapdragon-powered PCs in the second half of 2021. On one hand, it’s easy to think that while porting over a version of an existing x86-native Windows application to Qualcomm’s Arm-powered 8cx and 8cx Gen 2-based PCs is nice to have, it’s not that big of a deal. But what makes this news more interesting are the technologies being leveraged to enable this solution and how they provide a small glimpse into the future of PC software … [Read more...] about Qualcomm and Sophos strike cybersecurity deal that highlights benefits of 5G and AI in PCs
