Marriott plans to open over 60 new hotels in China in 2021

Video Player Close SHANGHAI, March 4 (Xinhua) -- Hotel corporation Marriott International announced on Wednesday that it plans to open over 60 new hotels in China in 2021. The operation of these new hotels, as well as Marriott's existing businesses, will prioritize China's domestic market as international traveling has not fully resumed due to COVID-19. It will cater to holiday travel demands as well as short-distance travel and staycations. The company also plans to incorporate ways to attract younger guests. Earlier this year, the corporation opened a JW Marriott in Shanghai, making Shanghai the first city in the Asia-Pacific region to have 50 hotels managed by Marriott. In 2021, Marriott will not only continue to develop in China's first-tier cities like Shanghai but will further expand its market in other cities as well. For instance, 15 new hotels are planned to be constructed in Xi'an, a famous travel destination in northwest China's Shaanxi Province. The England-born wrestler – whose real name is Thomas Billington – was also one-half of The British Bulldogs, one of the most popular tag teams during the 1980s. Billington joined WWE – then called World Wrestling Federation – in 1984, forming the famous team with his cousin, Davey Boy Smith. The iconic duo, who also had a mascot English bulldog named Matilda, were often involved in classic matches against the likes of The Hart Foundation (Bret “Hit Man” Hart and Jim “The Anvil” Neidhart). New QR code initiative to speed up process of providing feedback on municipal issues

SINGAPORE: The Municipal Services Office (MSO) has launched an initiative to simplify the way residents can report issues. Under the programme, called OneService Lite, QR codes can be scanned at places where residents frequent, such as HDB lift landings. They can then send their complaint through an online form, without having to download the OneService app, announced Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Grace Fu. “We are improving accessibility to services, by bringing our mainstay reporting function to where residents are,” said Ms Fu at the Ministry of National Development’s (MND) Committee of Supply debate on Wednesday (Mar 4). Since February of this year, OneService Lite has been piloted at 20 blocks under the Aljunied-Hougang and Jurong-Clementi town councils, MSO said. It will subsequently be rolled out to neighbourhoods under the Choa Chu Kang, Holland-Bukit Panjang and Pasir Ris-Punggol town councils. Residents will soon be able to submit feedback via social … [Read more...] about New QR code initiative to speed up process of providing feedback on municipal issues

Berlin: Germany Unveils Plan to Re-Open Cinemas But Uncertainty Remains

Movie theaters have been shut across the country since it went into its second lockdown in November. Late Wednesday night there was a sliver of good news for the German film industry —and for anyone trying to sell films into Germany at this week's virtual European Film Market: Germany plans to re-open cinemas. Sort of. Chancellor Angela Merkel's federal government, and representatives of Germany's states, have agreed to a "five-step" program to take the country out of lockdown, including plans to re-open movie theaters, which have been shuttered since November —in the country's second coronavirus lockdown. Under the plan, Germany is set to remain under lockdown until at least March 28, but some businesses will be allowed to open and operate, under hygienic conditions, depending on the infection levels in individual cities and regions. The five steps in the plan refer to infection levels —the number of registered COVID-19 infections per 100,000 population—with restrictions easing … [Read more...] about Berlin: Germany Unveils Plan to Re-Open Cinemas But Uncertainty Remains

Johnson & Johnson knew for decades that asbestos lurked in its baby powder

LOS ANGELES: Darlene Coker knew she was dying. She just wanted to know why. She knew that her cancer, mesothelioma, arose in the delicate membrane surrounding her lungs and other organs. She knew it was as rare as it was deadly, a signature of exposure to asbestos. And she knew it afflicted mostly men who inhaled asbestos dust in mines and industries such as shipbuilding that used the carcinogen before its risks were understood. Coker, 52 years old, had raised two daughters and was running a massage school in Lumberton, a small town in eastern Texas. How had she been exposed to asbestos? “She wanted answers,” her daughter Cady Evans said. Fighting for every breath and in crippling pain, Coker hired Herschel Hobson, a personal-injury lawyer. He homed in on a suspect: the Johnson’s Baby Powder that Coker had used on her infant children and sprinkled on herself all her life. Hobson knew that talc and asbestos often occurred together in the earth, and that mined talc could be … [Read more...] about Johnson & Johnson knew for decades that asbestos lurked in its baby powder

Israel raids Ramallah after two soldiers shot dead

RAMALLAH, Palestinian Territories: A Palestinian shot dead two Israeli soldiers at a bus stop in the occupied West Bank on Thursday (Dec 13), the military said, sparking army raids in the city of Ramallah during which a Palestinian was killed. In response, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to 'legalise' thousands of settlements homes considered unlawfully-built even by Israel. The attack came hours after security forces killed two Palestinian murder suspects. In total six people were killed in the most violent 24 hours to hit the West Bank and Jerusalem in months. The Israeli army said a Palestinian exited his car at a bus stop near the Ofra settlement in the West Bank before opening fire on soldiers and civilians. How brands will target ads to you after the death of browser cookies

(Subscribe to our Today's Cache newsletter for a quick snapshot of top 5 tech stories. Click here to subscribe for free.) Next year, Alphabet Inc's Google plans to phase out technology in its Chrome browser that lets other companies track users' web browsing . But that does not mean you will see irrelevant ads, or that the pair of shoes you have been eyeing will stop following you around the web. Here is why Google is making the move, the backlash it has generated and how advertisers plan to personalise ads even after the company kills off a technology known as third-party cookies. Privacy concerns Severe data breaches early last decade led to ground breaking privacy laws, in place since 2018 in the European Union and California, that impose significant fines on violators. The laws ushered an end to the era of big tech companies tracking users' every move - often without permission - and sharing that data however they wanted with other businesses. Google, Apple Inc, … [Read more...] about How brands will target ads to you after the death of browser cookies

The Altroz iTurbo is a combination of power and performance

The Altroz is a striking looking hatchback with ample space offering an excellent ride and handling balance; a fly in the ointment was the sole petrol engine on offer. Now however, there is a new turbo-petrol which promises improved performance. So what is it like? On paper it certainly delivers. Power is bumped up to 110hp while torque has risen from 113Nm to 140Nm. Coming to its performance, there is good news and bad. The good bit is that the extra power is certainly apparent — the car no longer feels underpowered. Demand more, however, and it will leave you wanting. The trouble is that, while performance is an improvement over the naturally aspirated unit, it is still not as strong as some other small displacement turbo-petrols. Also, the Altroz uses indirect or port injection, which is not as sophisticated as the direct-injection turbo-petrols of its rivals. Riding the torque wave Look at the Altroz Turbo as a more powerful version of the regular Altroz and it starts … [Read more...] about The Altroz iTurbo is a combination of power and performance
