The past year of pandemic precautions and cutbacks has radically altered the way the East Baton Rouge Public Defender’s Office works to represent clients. It is not the first time public defense has weathered a crisis. When much of the parish flooded in 2016, the office suffered: financially with fewer traffic tickets that provide much of the local public defense revenue, and personally with staffers losing their homes. However, the practice of defending clients, while hampered, went back to normal in about a month, according to Lindsay Blouin, deputy district defender. Bangkok – The Metropolitan Police Bureau announced the arrest of pro-democracy activist and singer Ammy “Bottom Blues”, or Chai-amorn Kaewviboon, at the early hour of this morning, March 3rd, after being wanted by the police for allegedly setting fire to the portrait of His Majesty the King in front of Khlong Prem prison on Sunday morning. Police Lieutenant General Pakkapong Pongpetra, the commissioner of Metropolitan Police Bureau, told reporters this afternoon that Ammy was detained at a rented room in Ayutthaya Province at about 1:00 AM. He was taken to the nearest hospital in the province for initial treatment as he claimed injuries to his left shoulder and pelvis. The singer was initially charged with Section 112 of lese majeste, burning property, and mischief charges, according to the arrest warrant issued by the Criminal Court. Vietnam begins COVID-19 vaccination on March 8 Vietnam launches its COVID-19 inoculation drive on March 8 morning, administering the AstraZeneca vaccine to medical workers in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and northern Hai Duong province – the country’s biggest pandemic hotspot at present. The vaccination is conducted at the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Hanoi, the HCM City Hospital for Tropical Diseases and two medical centres in Hai Duong. As many as 100 staff members of the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases are expected to receive the shots in the morning of March 8. The hospital is allocated 450 doses among the first batch of 117,600 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine the country has received. In Hai Duong, 50 medical workers at Hai Duong city’s medical centre, and 30 others at Kim Thanh district’s medical centre will be the first in the province to be injected.
