Virtual reality, online booking sites have yet to replace traditional travel tools, says report

Image: Delta Air Line via AFP Relaxnews A new study looking at American travel habits reveals that while consumers have been quick to embrace some emerging trends, they’ve been wary of accepting others. According to new research from global market research group Mintel, over the last year, 12 percent of Americans booked accommodations on a home-share website like Airbnb and HomeAway. That rises to 19 percent among millennial travelers, which Mintel defines as a group aged 23 to 40. Despite the plethora of third-party online booking providers like Expedia, Kayak, Booking and Hotels.com, the survey also showed that the most popular way to book a trip remains the traditional travel agency, with 40 percent of Americans working directly with an agent. That compares to 35 percent of consumers who booked through an online travel agency. While consumers have been quick to embrace the convenience of self-check-in kiosks, authors noted a reluctance and skepticism for technologies like … [Read more...] about Virtual reality, online booking sites have yet to replace traditional travel tools, says report

Initiative’s success helped by quick response to pandemic

As 2020 is coming to end, how do you evaluate the development of businesses that received recognition during the Vietnam Value Programme? Vu Ba Phu, director general of the Trade Promotion Agency under the Ministry of Industry and Trade After 17 years of running the programme with seven times choosing national brands, we have witnessed the continuous growth of many domestic enterprises. At the first selection in 2008, we saw only 30 chosen companies with their products. By 2018, this number had grown to 97, and this year we have recorded 124 enterprises and their brands. However, the growth of the business community has not only happened in the number of participating businesses, but also export turnover, sales, and their contribution to the state budget, as well as their efforts in social responsibility and job creation. Asia’s ‘Milk Tea’ activists cross borders for democratic change

Solidarity between pro-democracy advocates has been gaining momentum across Asia in the last couple of months, both in cyberspace and in the streets. The informal Milk Tea Alliance unites like-minded political activists from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand and Myanmar. Although their agendas at home vary, protesters clashing with riot police in Myanmar can relate to Thais demanding reform of the monarchy. Hong Kongers contesting Beijing’s National Security Law , meanwhile, can resonate with Taiwanese resisting Chinese mainland encroachment. Thitinan Pongsudhirak, a professor of political science at Thailand's Chulalongkorn University, told DW that the growing transnational movement "has aligned the aspirations of young demographics across Asia, favoring democratic norms and values against authoritarianism in their countries and beyond." How did the Milk Tea Alliance come about? In recent months, young pro-democracy activists in Asia have shown how online activism can morph into … [Read more...] about Asia’s ‘Milk Tea’ activists cross borders for democratic change

Natural gas and America’s clean energy transition

President Biden has set the ambitious, important climate goal of achieving net zero emissions from the nation’s electric power sector by 2035.  Already, natural gas has played a key role in lowering U.S. carbon dioxide emissions in the past 15 years, in part by displacing higher emitting coal. But gas, which still provides more than a third of America’s electricity, must play an even greater part in America’s decarbonization plans going forward. Right now, gas uniquely supports the expansion of renewable energy by providing an instantly dispatchable source of electricity. Unlike coal and nuclear plants, natural gas power plants turn on and off within minutes, allowing the grid to quickly match supply and demand even when the wind isn’t blowing and the sun isn’t shining. As a U.S. National Renewable Energy Laboratory report has noted, this unique flexibility of natural gas generation thereby facilitates the steady expansion of renewables. Yet as we move toward … [Read more...] about Natural gas and America’s clean energy transition

Digital technologies key to modernization of farm ecosystem

Farmers play a vital role in the global community, because their hard work and dedication produce the food and other necessities that we all need. Agriculture is the most basic priority of a successful society. As the famous agronomist, Nobel Peace Prize winner and "father of the green revolution" Normal Borlaug said, "Everything else can wait; agriculture can't." Among all the nations in the world, China has the largest population and thus the most mouths to feed. The well-being of our own people depends on our ability to feed ourselves with safe, nutritious food that is grown sustainably. This is not easy, given that we have 20 percent of the world population but only 7 percent of arable land. China has successfully developed its agricultural sector over past decades but such development has also contributed to a shortage of good farmland as well as a strain on water supplies. Beyond our borders, the whole world faces an urgent need to collaborate on climate change and … [Read more...] about Digital technologies key to modernization of farm ecosystem
