Les Miles offered a secret settlement to an LSU student, sources say. It has now surfaced.

Former LSU head football coach Les Miles reached a settlement with a former student who accused him of harassment several years ago, and the settlement has surfaced as investigators probe the university’s handling of sexual misconduct and domestic violence complaints, multiple sources with direct knowledge of the situation have confirmed to The Advocate | The Times-Picayune. The episode goes back about a decade, when a former LSU Athletic Department student intern accused Miles of “hitting on her,” three of the sources said. “As part of the Husch Blackwell review and our internal investigations, we have heard about a settlement but LSU is not a party to it and we have not seen it,” Jim Sabourin, the university's vice president of strategic communications, said when presented with the allegations Wednesday. Husch Blackwell is the law firm LSU hired to scrutinize the university's handling of sexual misconduct and other complaints. AstraZeneca to miss second-quarter EU vaccine supply target by half

AstraZeneca Plc has told the European Union it expects to deliver less than half the COVID-19 vaccines it was contracted to supply in the second quarter, an EU official told Reuters on Tuesday. Contacted by Reuters , AstraZeneca did not deny what the official said, but a statement late in the day said the company was striving to increase productivity to deliver the promised 180 million doses. The expected shortfall, which has not previously been reported, follows a big reduction in supplies in the first quarter and could hit the EU’s ability to meet its target of vaccinating 70% of adults by summer . The EU official, who is directly involved in talks with the Anglo-Swedish drug maker, said the company had told the bloc during internal meetings that it “would deliver less than 90 million doses in the second quarter.” AstraZeneca’s contract with the EU, which was leaked last week , showed the company had committed to delivering 180 million doses to the 27-nation bloc in … [Read more...] about AstraZeneca to miss second-quarter EU vaccine supply target by half

Photograph: Daniel Pockett/Getty Images World number one Ash Barty's dream of become the first homegrown Australian Open champion since 1978 was shattered on Wednesday after an extraordinary 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 quarter-final loss to Karolina Muchova. The Czech was a player transformed after taking a medical timeout when she started feeling dizzy in the Melbourne heat and rallied to secure a place in her first Grand Slam semi-final. The 24-year-old will meet the winner of the later quarter-final between Americans Jennifer Brady and Jessica Pegula for a place in the final against Serena Williams or Naomi Osaka. Barty had no complaints about the medical timeout that turned the match on its head. "It's within the rules," Barty said. IMAGE: Karolina Muchova receives medical treatment. Over her 10-year career, the casting manager has earned a reputation for her on-target instinct in identifying new stars. "This is my 10th year looking for new talent in showbiz. ‘Gavin Williamson is dunce of our schools at time when role is most vital’

When the coronavirus has disrupted the schooling of a generation of children the role of the Education Secretary has rarely been so important. Yet we have been lumbered in the form of Gavin Williamson with arguably the most incompetent person to have filled that post. Parents are crying out for clarity on how schools will reopen after the long lockdown. They were led to believe that all pupils in England would be back in class on March 8. It has now emerged that secondary schoolchildren will only start to return from that date and it will be dependent, in part, on the success of a new testing programme. Despite having weeks to plan for this circumstance, it is still unclear how the mass testing regime will work in practice. Do you enjoy reading about politics? Sign up for all the best politics news from the Mirror Nor is the money promised to help children catch up with lost learning nearly sufficient. Jeep Wrangler Drag Races Mercedes G-Class And Two Defenders

Forget off-roading and see how they perform in the quarter-mile. The Jeep Wrangler , Land Rover Defender , and Mercedes-Benz G-Class are not generally the type of vehicles that you would see in a drag race, which makes this video from Car Wow so fascinating. Plus, it puts America's venerable off-roader against two European competitors. The Wrangler here packs the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that makes 272 horsepower (203 kilowatts) and 295 pound-feet (400 Newton-meters) that runs through an eight-speed automatic. The new Defender has a 2.0-liter turbodiesel with 240 hp (179 kw) and 317 lb-ft (430 Nm) that routes through an eight-speed automatic. There's also a classic Defender with a 2.2-liter turbodiesel with just 122 hp (91 kW) and 266 lb-ft (360 Nm) with a six-speed manual. Finally, there's the G350 version of the latest G-Class that packs a 2.9-liter inline-six turbodiesel with 286 hp (213 kW) and 443 lb-ft (600 Nm) channeling through a nine-speed … [Read more...] about Jeep Wrangler Drag Races Mercedes G-Class And Two Defenders

McLaren Artura Turns Into A Spider In New Unofficial Rendering

It still looks good without its roof. Last week, McLaren introduced the Artura , its new hybrid hypercar that packs significant performance for the price. It represents several firsts for the company, integrating the latest safety tech along with batteries and its “E-Motor.” However, McLaren has only shown off the fix-roofed coupe. It hasn’t said if a convertible version is coming, but our friends at Motor.es created an unofficial rendering imagining what one would look like. The Artura is a bit more mainstream than its previous supercars, though that doesn’t mean it doesn’t look like a McLaren . The Artura Spider rendering removes the roof, which drastically changes the greenhouse. The sloped roof is replaced with a pair of roll hoops that add some stylistic flair to the drop-top. The renderings also feature a pane of glass spanning between the roll hoops, which would likely reduce wind noise and buffeting. Little else changes, which is perfect considering the … [Read more...] about McLaren Artura Turns Into A Spider In New Unofficial Rendering

Remembering a Forgotten Protest: Vince Matthews, Wayne Collett and the 1972 Munich Olympics

They are the lost souls of protest, nearly five decades on from an act that was both misunderstood and reviled in its own time and largely forgotten or ignored since, even as it becomes more historically relevant by the day. They were two young Black American athletes – Vince Matthews from New York City and Wayne Collett from Los Angeles, more alike than the distance between their homes, yet different in ways that had defined their pasts, and would shape their futures. They were both fast, both strong. And fearless. Most of all, fearless. They ran the 400 meters, after all, and the track and field event they call the quarter (-mile) is not for the meek. The race of their lives was the 1972 Olympic 400 meter final in Munich, Germany ( West Germany, at the time). At 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 7, eight runners pushed away from starting blocks and staggered halfway around the first turn of the rust-colored, all-weather track. Matthews was in lane two, wearing high white socks; … [Read more...] about Remembering a Forgotten Protest: Vince Matthews, Wayne Collett and the 1972 Munich Olympics

ViacomCBS topped Wall Street analysts’ expectations for its fourth-quarter results, reporting diluted earnings per share of $1.04 and total revenue of just shy of $6.9 billion. The consensus forecast by analysts was for earnings of $1.01 and revenue of $6.9 billion, up 13% and 3%, respectively, from the same quarter in 2019. Because the merger of Viacom and CBS was completed in December 2019, the financials reflect pro-forma and adjusted results.
