Gabeira breaks women’s big wave record with Nazare giant

REUTERS: Brazilian daredevil Maya Gabeira has improved her own world record for the biggest wave surfed by a woman, riding a 73.5 foot (22.4m) giant at Portugal's Nazare and overshadowing the top male surfers in the process. Gabeira, who broke her leg and almost drowned at the same spot in 2013, was towed by jetski into her winning wave during a World Surf League (WSL) Big Wave competition in February. It not only topped her 68 foot (20.7m) record from 2018, also at Nazare, but was the biggest wave ridden by any surfer over the last year. "This world record really strikes me as quite amazing because the size of the wave was taller than the men's size this year," Gabeira said. "It means a woman actually rode the biggest wave of the year overall and that to me is crazy. "I had dreamed of it years ago but not as something realistic because there was no representation for me to believe that it was possible." The winner of the men's biggest wave for the year, Hawaii's Kai … [Read more...] about Gabeira breaks women’s big wave record with Nazare giant

Yohannes Brhanu, 22, identified as victim of North York ‘gun battle’ in Toronto’s record-tying 89th homicide of 2018

A midnight “gun battle” on a residential street has left one young man dead, stunned a quiet North York community and matched a tragic record in Toronto’s history. The eruption of gunfire early Wednesday killed Yohannes Brhanu, of Toronto, and brought the city’s homicide count to 89 in 2018, the highest on record since since 1991 — with six weeks remaining in the year. Story Behind the Story delivers insights into how the Star investigates, reports, and produces stories. Brhanu, 22, was found unresponsive in the driver’s seat of a vehicle shortly after midnight, following what police called an “alarming” concentration of firepower involving at least four guns and as many as 20 bullets fired. He died in hospital. Brhanu’s death is hitting his family and community hard. Brhanu was among the young men known as the “Neptune Four,” a high-profile case from 2011 that began with two Toronto officers stopping four Black teens on their way to an after-school program, and ended … [Read more...] about Yohannes Brhanu, 22, identified as victim of North York ‘gun battle’ in Toronto’s record-tying 89th homicide of 2018

Hassan breaks women’s one-hour record by 413 metres

BRUSSELS: Sifan Hassan, of the Netherlands, smashed the world record for the women's one-hour race by more than a lap when she ran 18,930 metres during the Brussels Diamond League meeting on Friday. The Ethiopian-born athlete, who won gold in the 1500 and 10,000 metres at the world championships last year, ran 413 metres - more than one whole lap - further than the previous record of 18,517, set by Ethiopian Dire Tune in 2008. The 27-year-old Hassan took control of the rarely-run race almost from the outset and surged away over the last minute of the endurance test to add to the mile world record she set at Monaco last year. "An hour is long; it takes a lot of concentration and focus," Hassan said. "After the first half, I found my rhythm. I'm really happy with this record". Lonah Chemtai Salpeter, of Israel, was second, having covered 18,571 metres - also beating the previous record - while Kenya's Eva Cherono finished third with 18,341. Formula 1: Hamilton on brink of Schumi record after three-in-one win

LONDON: Six-times world champion Lewis Hamilton took his tally of Formula One wins to 90 and the brink of Michael Schumacher's record on Sunday (Sep 13), but he said it felt like he had just done three in a day. The Briton's latest victory , in a Tuscan Grand Prix that was twice red-flagged and re-started, left him one shy of the Ferrari great - a record once held up as a milestone to withstand the test of time. "Hectic," said the 35-year-old Mercedes driver, when asked to sum up his afternoon at Ferrari-owned Mugello in central Italy. "Such a roller-coaster ride, emotionally and physically." "It was all a bit of a daze. It was like three races in one day." Hamilton has won six races out of nine this season and, with a seventh title looking inevitable, the year has become a countdown to two of the greatest records in the sport - both owned by Schumacher. There are eight races remaining and it is inconceivable that Hamilton will not win at least one more. He has been … [Read more...] about Formula 1: Hamilton on brink of Schumi record after three-in-one win

Commentary: How blockbuster The Wandering Earth captured China’s heart and smashed box office records

BEIJING: The Chinese have a blockbuster superstar action hero they can believe in and his name is Wu Jing. The man has the Midas touch whenever he stars in a film released to Chinese movie theaters. He had captured the hearts and minds of the Chinese as Wolf Warrior, which had scored record-breaking box office success, and gone on a wildly successful sequel Wolf Warrior 2, generating US$307 million for its first week in ticket sales in the summer of 2017. As groundbreaking as these films were, Wu’s latest flick The Wandering Earth has now surpassed that with a one-week total of US$349 million, according to Forbes magazine, during this year’s Chinese New Year’s celebrations. Wu Jing not only has Hollywood-worthy handsome looks, but in all his movies, he plays an all-too familiar lead character as the strong and silent, but reluctant hero, a man with a troubled soul who rises above it all despite his inner turmoil, when a crises ensues. His stereotyped caricature represents the … [Read more...] about Commentary: How blockbuster The Wandering Earth captured China’s heart and smashed box office records

Yamaha’s Vinales sets lap record to claim pole at San Marino Grand Prix

REUTERS: Yamaha's Maverick Vinales took pole position for Sunday's San Marino Grand Prix after setting a lap record of one minute, 31.411 seconds in qualifying to edge out Petronas Yamaha's Franco Morbidelli in Misano on Saturday. It was the Spaniard's second pole of the season and he was 0.312 seconds quicker than Morbidelli. Championship leader Fabio Quartararo will start the race from third on the grid. "I feel on the limit," Vinales, who eclipsed Jorge Lorenzo's all-time lap record of one minute, 31.629 seconds set in 2018, told reporters. "We tried to take out all the maximum from the bike... for sure we made a good strategy because I saved quite a lot of tyres during the weekend to put everything into Q2. It pays. "I feel amazing. I had a really good few weeks at home... carried on the good mood and every lap I felt fantastic on the bike... we're going to try and go at the maximum tomorrow." With Misano welcoming fans back into the grandstands with social distancing … [Read more...] about Yamaha’s Vinales sets lap record to claim pole at San Marino Grand Prix

Build-up of greenhouse gases hits new record despite lockdowns: UN

LONDON: Concentrations of greenhouse gases in the Earth's atmosphere hit a record high this year, a United Nations report showed on Wednesday (Sep 9), as an economic slowdown amid the coronavirus pandemic had little long-term effect. The sharp, but short, dip in emissions earlier this year represented only a blip in the build-up of climate-warming carbon dioxide. "Greenhouse gas concentrations - which are already at their highest levels in 3 million years - have continued to rise," said Petteri Taalas, head of the World Meteorological Organization, a UN agency based in Geneva. While daily emissions fell in April to just 17 per cent relative to the previous year, those levels were still on a par with 2006 emissions - underlining how much global emissions have grown over the last 15 years. And by early June, as factories and offices reopened, emissions were back up to within 5 per cent of 2019 levels, according to the report by several UN agencies. Even if 2020 emissions are … [Read more...] about Build-up of greenhouse gases hits new record despite lockdowns: UN
