Myth busting: Pluck out a strand of grey hair and 10 more will grow in its place

If you’ve spotted a strand of grey hair peeking out from your jet-black tresses before, you might have done what your mum explicitly advised you not to: Pulling it off your head. Mum’s rationale, or at least according to an old wives’ tale, is that yanking that single grey hair off will earn you 10 more in its place. The good news is, doing so won’t suddenly lead to an explosion of more, said Dr Eileen Tan, a dermatologist with Eileen Tan Skin Clinic & Associates at Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital. But there’s a bit of bad news, too: If you keep doing that, you may suffer from permanent loss of hair, she said. The fact is, the follicle (a tiny sac in your scalp from which hair grows) that produced the grey hair you pulled off will produce another strand of grey hair in its place – just not 10, like your mum said. And if you’re constantly plucking out from that same follicle, that mini hair-making factory might go on strike and cease producing for good. WHAT … [Read more...] about Myth busting: Pluck out a strand of grey hair and 10 more will grow in its place

Cartoonist Turns Audi R8 Into A Wicked Art Car

Marketing meets art. Art cars are not new. Artists use the automobile as a blank canvas for both beautiful and exciting works of art. No two are alike, and that’s the beauty of the art car. BMW is probably most famous for such creations , with a plethora of glammed-up examples. But other automakers have dipper their creative toes in the water, such as Rolls-Royce and Alfa Romeo in the recent past. Audi has, in the past, done an art car as well, but the Audi R8 here is not an official project of the automaker. Instead, aftermarket tuning company ABT Sportsline, known for taking performance Audi vehicles and turning them straight to insanity, commissioned the car. ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ runs into trouble in India over ‘homosexual’ content

India’s Broadcasting Content Complaints Council (BCCC) has issued a notice to the channel Star World for showing a ‘homosexual encounter’ and ‘denigrating women’ in the popular American medical drama series Grey’s Anatomy . See also: 7 oddly specific things banned from movies around the world The notice was given after a complaint from the ministry of information and broadcasting which described the scenes as ‘indecent’ and ‘vulgar’. BCCC, a self-regulatory body set up by the Indian Broadcasting Foundation, has asked for a reply from the channel by Dec. 1. Homosexuality is still illegal in India, under Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code. This law dates back to 1860, the period of British rule, and criminalises sexual activities “against the order of nature”. This is the latest instance of TV channels being held responsible for offensive content. In 2013 and 2014, the government had ordered the entertainment channel Comedy Central to be taken off-air for a total of … [Read more...] about ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ runs into trouble in India over ‘homosexual’ content

Legal Grey Areas Lead to Messy Mail-Order Bride Divorces

January 20, 2012 07:40 The increase in international marriages in Korea has led to growing abuse and complaints which end in divorce as Korean men marry mail-order brides from abroad after only a few hours of acquaintance, or in some cases none at all. When they divorce, the women sometimes use children from the marriage as a means to blackmail their ex-husbands. The Seoul Family Court saw about 40 cases last year where child custody was one of main conflicts in international marriages. As of 2010, there have been more than 26,000 international marriages between Korean men and foreign women. In the same year, nearly 8,000 of such couples divorced. There is not much that men who have been scammed can do. If they turn to the police, it may mean that they never see the child again. One 44-year-old man who married a 24-year-old Vietnamese woman two years ago is having a hard time because his wife sent the child to Vietnam last year and is now demanding a W30 million … [Read more...] about Legal Grey Areas Lead to Messy Mail-Order Bride Divorces

Ellen Pompeo Says

Few characters in all of fiction have been through as much as Dr. Meredith Grey , played by Ellen Pompeo. Over 17 seasons of Grey’s Anatomy , Meredith has seen shootings, bomb scares, plane crashes, ferryboat crashes, death, destruction, and despair, all while trying to maintain a career as an attending surgeon and occasional dog mom. How much more grief can one character take? CBS Sunday Morning tried to get Pompeo to answer that very question on today’s episode, asking whether or not the long-running ABC medical drama created by Shonda Rhimes will continue after the current season, which is on winter hiatus. Pompeo answers, “Can’t say. We honestly have not decided. We’re really trying to figure it out right now.” The producer is incredulous, asking, “You’re in the middle of deciding whether it ends or doesn’t end?” and Pompeo answers a question with another question: “What story do we tell to end a show this iconic? How do we do it? I just want to make sure we do this … [Read more...] about Ellen Pompeo Says

Cold comfort: On Pak continues to be in FATF

To Islamabad’s deep disappointment, the Paris-based 39-member Financial Action Task Force has decided once again to keep Pakistan on its “grey list” of countries under “increased monitoring” , giving it another three months to complete its commitments. After being removed from that list in 2015, Pakistan was put back on it in June 2018, and handed a 27-point action list to fulfil. On Thursday, FATF President Marcus Pleyer announced that although Pakistan has made “significant progress”, it had three remaining points of the 27 that were only partially addressed, notably all in the area of curbing terror financing. The body listed the remaining tasks: demonstrating terror-funding prosecution is accurate, effective and dissuasive, and thoroughly implementing financial sanctions against all terrorists designated by the UN Security Council, which include LeT founder Hafiz Saeed, JeM chief Masood Azhar, other leaders of terror groups in Pakistan, and those belonging to al Qaeda. … [Read more...] about Cold comfort: On Pak continues to be in FATF

CFL eyes September return but no season a possibility

REUTERS: The Canadian Football League (CFL) will try for a September kickoff but acknowledged on Wednesday there was a possibility of no season at all due to the novel coronavirus outbreak. If a season can be salvaged, the championship Grey Cup game will not be played in Regina, Saskatchewan as planned but will be awarded to the team with the superior record. Regina, home of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, will host the 2022 Grey Cup, the CFL said in a statement. Hamilton, Ontario will stage the 109th Grey Cup in 2021. The league also said it was cancelling the Touchdown Atlantic game scheduled for June 25 in Halifax, another setback in CFL expansion plans. "We are not announcing or promising a return this fall," said CFL commissioner Randy Ambrosie during a virtual town hall with season ticket holders. "A cancelled season is also possible. Again, it’s too soon to make a sure call at this point." Ambrosie has maintained that more than just a season is at stake if the … [Read more...] about CFL eyes September return but no season a possibility

Apple iPhone 13 may come with 1TB storage option

Data storage woes of iPhone users and potential buyers could soon be lessened a lot, if a report about the in-the-works iPhone 13 are to be believed. The upcoming Apple iPhone 13 could offer a 1TB storage option, as per a report by 9To5Mac. The report is based upon the inputs received from analysts at Los Angeles-based investment firm Wedbush. The maximum possible storage you could get with the iPhone 12 series is 512GB. There was an earlier report by Front Page Tech also, which said that the next iPhone could offer a 1TB storage option with its high-end model. The recent report by 9To5Mac corroborates the same. If the claims in the report turn out to be true, the iPhone 13 would become the first iPhone to offer a 1TB storage option. Till date, Apple has not stretched the storage option of the iPhone beyond 512GB, though it has done the same for the iPad, with the iPad Pro model that comes with a 1TB storage option. Apple’s competitor Samsung, on the other hand, … [Read more...] about Apple iPhone 13 may come with 1TB storage option
