Joe Biden’s Plan to Cancel $10K of Student Debt Is More Popular Than Eliminating $50K: Poll

Despite the push from progressive lawmakers to cancel up to $50,000 of student loans per borrower, President Joe Biden 's scaled-back plan to tackle the debt crisis is much more popular. According to a new poll from Monmouth University, Biden's pitch to eliminate $10,000 in college debt for anyone with an outstanding federal loan has 61 percent support among U.S. adults. Thirty-seven percent of those surveyed opposed the idea. When the amount was increased to $50,000 of debt cancelation, public support dropped to 45 percent. A majority of those polled—53 percent—opposed the proposition. Democrats overwhelmingly supported both measures, although 18 percent more backed Biden's $10,000 proposal than the progressive pitch for $50,000. More than two-thirds of Republicans opposed both options. Biden has repeatedly rejected calls from some members of his party to cancel $50,000 of student debt per loan borrower, disputing claims from Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Senate … [Read more...] about Joe Biden’s Plan to Cancel $10K of Student Debt Is More Popular Than Eliminating $50K: Poll

Senate Advances COVID Relief Bill With Kamala Harris as Tie-Breaking Vote

The U.S. Senate voted 51-50 on Thursday to advance President Joe Biden 's coronavirus relief bill, bringing the sprawling $1.9 trillion package one step closer to being passed. Vice President Kamala Harris served as the tiebreaker in the procedural vote. All 48 Democrats and the two independent lawmakers who caucus with them voted in favor of moving forward with the legislation. Meanwhile, every single Republican member voted against it. Next, the chamber's clerks will read the nearly 700-page bill aloud—a request made by Senator Ron Johnson (R-Wisc.) to further delay the legislation's passage. After the reading, lawmakers will have up to 20 hours to debate the bill before participating in a vote-a-rama with unlimited amendments. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) promised Thursday that the chamber will stay in session "no matter how long it takes" to finish voting on Biden's American Rescue Plan this week. "Once the American people have heard all over … [Read more...] about Senate Advances COVID Relief Bill With Kamala Harris as Tie-Breaking Vote

As George Floyd Trial Looms, Cops in Minneapolis Apologize for Detaining Black Victim at Airport

Airport police have apologized for briefly detaining a Black victim instead of the white woman who harassed her at Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport in Hennepin County, Minnesota, where authorities are preparing for George Floyd 's murder trial. On February 15, a bystander filmed a video showing airport police briefly detaining a Black victim of verbal abuse rather than a white woman who was harassing passengers. The footage depicts the white woman walking up to travelers, before reaching to grab a mask worn by the Black woman. As the Black victim raises her hands to defend herself, a police officer can be seen intervening by grabbing the Black woman. "Wrong person, wrong person," bystanders yelled in the video as they pointed to the white woman. "It's her." The cop lets go of the Black woman after roughly 13 seconds to detain the white woman. The Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) apologized for the initial confusion. Kaley Cuoco Opened Up About The “State Of Shock” She Was In After Jim Parsons Announced He Was Leaving “Big Bang Theory”

Kaley Cuoco has enjoyed a pretty massive career so far and, of course, it's largely due to her standout role in The Big Bang Theory . The CBS sitcom was huge and thrust its leading stars into the mainstream spotlight. It was so successful that the cast was even able to negotiate million-dollar-per-episode payouts from Season 8 onward. Reflecting on the role of a lifetime in a recent interview with Variety, Cuoco said she didn't know how to react after signing her first big-money contract with the show, as it left her and costar Johnny Galecki stunned. And from the very beginning, Cuoco explained that she felt equal to her male costars in terms of pay, something which "set a standard" for the star moving forward. "I knew that I was equal to them from day one," she said. "And that was never questioned in my experience with Big Bang — which I will always appreciate, because it set a standard for me." However, it all had to come to an end at some … [Read more...] about Kaley Cuoco Opened Up About The “State Of Shock” She Was In After Jim Parsons Announced He Was Leaving “Big Bang Theory”

‘QAnon Shaman’ Says He’s ‘Disappointed’ Trump Did Not Pardon Him

Jacob Chansley, otherwise known as the “QAnon Shaman,” said during an interview from his prison cell he was “disappointed” former President Donald Trump did not pardon him and other participants of the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol. Chansley told “60 Minutes+” reporter Laurie Segall in a video posted Thursday that he remains loyal to Trump but regrets participating in the Capitol riot “with every fiber of” his being. Chansley and his attorney previously requested a pardon shortly before Trump left office, a request that was not granted. The interview is Chansley’s first since being arrested in January. “I honestly believed and still believe that he cares about the Constitution, that he cares about the American people, and that’s also why, and you know it wounded me so deeply, and why it disappointed me so greatly that I and others did not get a pardon,” Chansley said of the former president during the interview. ‘QAnon Shaman’ Hasn’t Eaten In Days, Attorney Says In Motion For Release

An attorney for the so-called “QAnon Shaman” arrested for participating in the Capitol riots filed an emergency motion for his release Tuesday after finding he had not eaten for days, according to a court document. Attorney Al Watkins filed a emergency motion on Feb. 2 on behalf of Jacob Chansley, a self-described shaman, citing his client’s refusal to consume non-organic foods which has resulted in significant weight loss, KTVI FOX 2 reported . The defense team’s court filing claims Chansley has lost more than 20 pounds within a week. United States District Judge for the District of Columbia Royce C. Lamberth granted Chansley’s request for organic-food Wednesday afternoon following the filing of Watkins’ motion, Law & Crime reported . Chansley was arrested by authorities Jan. 9 for his alleged role in the Capitol riots after being photographed numerous times throughout the Capitol building. 20 Attorneys General Deem H.R. 1 Unconstitutional: It Sets ‘Alarming Mandates’

Twenty attorneys general signed a letter addressed to House and Senate leaders pleading against H.R. 1, which the Democrat-led House passed on party lines late Wednesday evening, deeming it unconstitutional as it sets what they described as “alarming mandates,” leading to the federalization of state elections. The House passed H.R. 1, of the “For the People Act of 2021,” Wednesday night, earning praise from Democrats across the board. Hours prior to its passage, 20 attorneys general, led by Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita (R), sent a letter addressed to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY). H.R. 1 “betrays several Constitutional deficiencies and alarming mandates that, if passed, would federalize state elections and impose burdensome costs and regulations on state and local officials,” they wrote, detailing the Elections Clause of Article I of the … [Read more...] about 20 Attorneys General Deem H.R. 1 Unconstitutional: It Sets ‘Alarming Mandates’

Senate nears $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief bill votes after half-day GOP delay

WASHINGTON — The Senate steered on Friday toward a voting marathon on Democrats’ $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief bill after enduring an extraordinary half-day holdup forced by a Republican foe of President Joe Biden’s top legislative priority. The chamber planned to begin voting around midday on a mountain of amendments, mostly by GOP opponents and virtually all of which were destined to be rejected. That would set the Senate on course toward approving its reworked version of the massive measure, probably over the weekend, and shipping it back to the House so it could whisk the final package to Biden for his signature. Moments after the Senate took up the legislation Thursday, Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., forced the chamber’s clerks to read aloud the entire 628-page measure. The exhausting task took the staffers 10 hours and 44 minutes and ended shortly after 2 a.m. EST, with Johnson alternately sitting at his desk and pacing around the mostly empty chamber. Democratic leaders made … [Read more...] about Senate nears $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief bill votes after half-day GOP delay
