‘Thanks Jack!’: Twitter’s ‘Hacked’ Documents Warning Backfires, Leading to Exposé Going Viral

Twitter has reversed its warning label that it initially applied to a story, published by The Grayzone news site, revealing a UK government funded mass propaganda effort aimed at isolating and destabilising Russia. The Grayzone's Max Blumenthal published the story, shortly after investigative journalist Kit Klarenberg's own piece on the matter, based on a treasure trove of documents belonging to the UK's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). The Grayzone's article is entitled Reuters, BBC, and Bellingcat participated in covert UK Foreign Office-funded programs to “weaken Russia,” leaked docs reveal. However, one day after the story began to be shared via the social media giant, a message from Twitter was added stating, "These materials may have been obtained through hacking". If a user attempted to like or retweet the article the message would appear again, this time encompassing most of the screen if the he or she was using their mobile phone. EPL: Raphinha helps Leeds to 3-0 win over Southampton

Photograph: Mike Egerton/Pool via Reuters A superb free kick from Brazilian winger Raphinha capped a 3-0 win for Leeds United over Southampton at Elland Road on Tuesday, condemning the struggling Saints to their seventh defeat in eight Premier League games. The tone was set for Southampton in the first half when a decision to award them a penalty after Nathan Tella appeared to be felled in the box was overturned by referee Andre Marriner following a VAR review. Marriner also ruled out a goal for the Saints from a quickly-taken free kick just before halftime, saying he had not blown the whistle before James Ward-Prowse played in Che Adams, who put the ball in the net. Leeds went ahead two minutes into the second half when Tyler Roberts played an incisive pass to Patrick Bamford, who fired across the goalkeeper and into the net. Why Actions Speak Louder Than Words in Psychology

Source: PublicDomainPictures / Pixabay There he was, renowned behavioral analyst Dr. Billy Baum. Harvard trained and highly regarded in the field of behavioral analysis, Billy, as he is called by those who know him well, would always put on a little show at our weekly departmental colloquia for the Psychology Department at the University of New Hampshire, where I got my Ph.D. in 1997. With a beard worthy of Santa Claus, a twinkle in his eye, and a white lab coat permanently affixed to his body, Billy, who is still writing about the nature of behavior, to my understanding, was ready to pounce on any speaker on any topic. Never in a mean way. But always with a very particular agenda. You see, Billy and his close colleague Tony Nevin both were what we would call old-school behaviorists. They were trained in the tradition of B. F. Skinner and others who represented a perspective that dominated the behavioral sciences for decades during the 20th century. Behaviorists saw … [Read more...] about Why Actions Speak Louder Than Words in Psychology

Vernon Reid and the Power of Comic Book Complexity

By Michael A. Friedman “Look in my eyes, what do you see? The cult of personality . I know your anger , I know your dreams . I’ve been everything you want to be. I’m the cult of personality.” — from “ Cult of Personality ” by Living Colour There is something enticing about viewing the world in simplistic all-or-none terms of “good” and “evil.” We love seeing ourselves as righteous and perfect, while viewing those with whom we have conflict as villainous and devoid of moral value. Why get involved in the stickiness of the complexity of human interaction? And often we choose our entertainment based on our desire for this fantasy world. Good guys versus bad guys, cops versus robbers, superheroes versus villains — these are the dichotomies that pervade our cultural landscape. Source: Photo by Travis Shinn Who doesn’t love seeing a bad guy get their due in a television show or movie? And the more intense the retribution, the better – because if … [Read more...] about Vernon Reid and the Power of Comic Book Complexity

Cathy Tyson says she shunned Hollywood in 80s because it didn’t match her values

In the 1980s, the world was fawning over a stunning young British actress who was set to become the next star of Hollywood. Aged just 21, Cathy Tyson was already one of the UK’s most recognisable actresses after wowing audiences as a glamorous prostitute in the 1986 film Mona Lisa with Bob Hoskins. She had been nominated for a Golden Globe and had won best supporting actress at the Los Angeles Film Critics Association awards. The Liverpudlian was spoken of in the same breath as other emerging stars such as Julia Roberts and Sharon Stone. But her upbringing left her cautious – because she had been raised to believe America was bad. “I was brought up by a mother who was anti-American and pro-Russia,” says Cathy, “She wasn’t a spy, she was a socialist. So when I went to Hollywood at the age of 20, I went with this kind of attitude. I was very wary. “I spent some months there, and I did one film, but it was shot in Haiti not in America. I was getting lots of offers to do … [Read more...] about Cathy Tyson says she shunned Hollywood in 80s because it didn’t match her values
