iPhone shares the spotlight with new services at Apple’s annual showcase
by Glenn Chapman The iPhone will be front and center at Apple’s upcoming media presentation even as the California tech giant steps up its efforts in content and services for its devices. In its trademark, tight-lipped style, Apple disclosed little about its plans for Tuesday’s event at its headquarters in the Silicon Valley city of Cupertino. For years now, Apple has hosted events in the fall to launch new iPhone models ahead of the holiday shopping season. Speculation is that Apple will introduce three upgraded iPhones, including “Pro” models, and a successor to its more affordable iPhone XR, as premium handset prices hover around $1,000. Some analysts say services, subscriptions and online content will share the stage with the company’s glitzy hardware as Apple seeks to shift its focus. “I think it is going to be the first year the event is going to also be about services,” Creative Strategies analyst Carolina Milanesi said. “We might get to see what Apple looks like … [Read more...] about iPhone shares the spotlight with new services at Apple’s annual showcase
iPhone 11 launch – Apple cuts prices, new services
by Glenn Chapman “The new iPhones are jam-packed with new capabilities and an incredible new design.” – Tim Cook Apple unveiled its iPhone 11 models last night (Thai time) with a price cut for the most basic models while also laying out plans for streaming and gaming services as it bids to weather the slump in the global smartphone market. No major surprises. But in a surprising tone for the tech leader, Apple focussed on ‘price’ as a key strategy in today’s announcements. Price appeared to be a key consideration as the tech giant reduced the entry level price for the iPhone 11 to $699 and undercut rivals for its gaming and streaming television subscriptions. Apple unveiled three versions of the iPhone 11 including “Pro” models with triple camera and other advanced features starting at $999 and $1,099, unchanged from last year’s prices, touting upgraded features including ultra-wide camera lenses. The surprise from Apple was the reduction in the starting price at $699, … [Read more...] about iPhone 11 launch – Apple cuts prices, new services
iPhone’s Face Unlock with a mask will soon work a lot better, but of course there’s a catch
If you've tried to unlock your iPhone using Face ID while wearing a face mask over the last year, you surely know how frustrating it is that it flat-out doesn't work. Instead of not even thinking about unlocking your phone as you swipe up from the bottom of the screen, you're asked to enter your passcode . Annoying, right? Well, there's good news. Apple has figured out a workaround , but there's also a catch: You have to have an Apple Watch . Apple finally stole my heart from the Google Pixel with this iPhone camera feature
ProRaw, the new photo format Apple introduced on its iPhone 12 Pro Max, is the number one thing pulling me away from my Pixel phone. I still love my Google Pixel . But more and more often, I reach for my iPhone 12 Pro Max when taking a shot. Its telephoto camera, which sits alongside wide-angle and ultrawide cameras, is a big draw. The control the ProRaw format gives me when I edit my shots, however, is the key to my shifting photography habits. The new ProRaw technology lets me achieve a look that's more pleasing and natural than I can get with the standard JPEG or HEIC photos most camera phones produce. That's important for both my nature and family photos. McAfee will break iPhone crypto for FBI in 3 weeks or eat shoe on live TV
In an op-ed for Business Insider titled " I'll decrypt the San Bernardino phone free of charge so Apple doesn't need to place a back door on its product ," libertarian presidential candidate and former antivirus developer John McAfee waded into the ongoing battle of words between Apple and the FBI with some choice words of his own. Never one to bring a knife to a verbal gunfight, McAfee unleashes a howitzer of invective, blasting the United States government for undermining the country’s "already ancient cybersecurity and cyberdefense systems." It takes only four short paragraphs for McAfee to start talking about Nazis and Hitler. Two paragraphs later—not counting blockquotes—McAfee proclaims that by pressing Apple to "back door" (his words) the iPhone and bypass or defeat the mechanisms keeping its data secure, the government is seeking to bring about the end of the world (as we know it). This is heavy stuff. We’ve written plenty of our own takes on the current situation … [Read more...] about McAfee will break iPhone crypto for FBI in 3 weeks or eat shoe on live TV
