Eerie images show snow and ice covered buildings in Russia 's Sementnozavodsky region. The images were taken in abandoned buildings in a settlement 11 miles (17 km) from the coal-mining town of Vorkuta. The region reaches extremely cold temperatures as low as minus 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit) in the winter months. Photos show how the snow has settled to cover the floors and furniture of the buildings while huge icicles have formed at the windows. An image taken from above shows how the snow has even formed a layer over the roofs of the buildings. Other images show how abandoned lorries have been buried during the snowfall. Migration out of the region each year from 2013 has turned some settlements into ghost towns amid the freezing temperatures and rising unemployment. The coal-mining town of Vorkuta is known as the easternmost and the coldest town in Europe, with short, cool summers and extremely cold and snowy winters. It has an estimated … [Read more...] about The frozen city: Snow and ice covers Russian ghost town abandoned since 2013 due its freezing -50C temperatures

Lego sushi, artificial snow, obstacle courses: Parents get creative during the COVID-19 circuit breaker
SINGAPORE: What started as a hunger pang for parent Andre Lim ended with him creating a building made of "Lego sushi" with his two sons. The 33-year-old said that he wanted to make sushi, but without an oshibako – a wooden mould for pressing rice and sushi toppings – he had to improvise. “I’m stuck at home so there’s no way we can get the wooden box, so I thought, ‘What’s the next special thing we can do?’” he told CNA. While Mr Lim prepared the saba fish and sushi rice for the dish, his children, aged five and three, started making the oshibako with Lego blocks – complete with a lid. After lining the improvised box with cling wrap, Mr Lim taught his two boys how to make sushi, the way he saw it done in Japan on his travels there. Cartoonist Turns Audi R8 Into A Wicked Art Car
Marketing meets art. Art cars are not new. Artists use the automobile as a blank canvas for both beautiful and exciting works of art. No two are alike, and that’s the beauty of the art car. BMW is probably most famous for such creations , with a plethora of glammed-up examples. But other automakers have dipper their creative toes in the water, such as Rolls-Royce and Alfa Romeo in the recent past. Audi has, in the past, done an art car as well, but the Audi R8 here is not an official project of the automaker. Instead, aftermarket tuning company ABT Sportsline, known for taking performance Audi vehicles and turning them straight to insanity, commissioned the car. Teachers, kids and 9News’ Kyle Clark call for DPS to bring back snow days
Teacher Lauren Epps has started a petition to Denver Public Schools in hopes of bringing back snow days. DPS did not call for a snow day despite nearly a foot of snow dumping late Wednesday and early Thursday — the city’s biggest snowmaker in five years . Pre-pandemic Thursday likely would’ve been filled with hot cocoa and sledding. Instead, DPS transitioned into a fully remote learning day. “On top of an already stressful time, Denver Public Schools is being unrealistic, tone-deaf, and most importantly, inequitable,” writes Epps in the Change.org petition. “By being the only school district in Colorado to call a “remote day” during the first storm last winter when every other district was closed, they have set a detrimental precedent.” Epps says it is extremely frustrating not to get a delayed start at minimum, which would allow her to adapt learning plans from the classroom to online. “As a parent, you should not be expected to suddenly turn your home or the home of … [Read more...] about Teachers, kids and 9News’ Kyle Clark call for DPS to bring back snow days

South Pole warmed three times the global rate in last 30 years: Study
BUENOS AIRES: At the South Pole, considered the coldest point on Earth, temperatures are rising fast. So fast, in fact, that Kyle Clem and other climate researchers began to worry and wonder whether human-driven climate change was playing a bigger role than expected in Antarctica. Temperature data shows that the desolate region has warmed at three times the global warming rate over the last three decades up through 2018, the South Pole's hottest year on record, the researchers report in a study published Monday in Nature Climate Change. Looking at data from 20 weather stations across Antarctica, the South Pole warming rate was seven times higher than the overall average for the continent. "The South Pole seemed to be isolated from what was going on across the rest of the world," said Clem, who has focused his research at the Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand on better understanding the Antarctic climate. "But all of the sudden, it ramps up with rapid warming, … [Read more...] about South Pole warmed three times the global rate in last 30 years: Study
2019 Jeep Cherokee Gets A More Traditional Face, Roomier Interior
Plus a 200-pound diet and a new 2.0-liter turbo engine. The unconventional look of the Jeep Cherokee caused quite a stir when it was revealed at the 2013 New York Auto Show. As in, a lot of critics hated the way it looked. “It was very progressive, modern,” admits Mike Manley, Head of the Jeep brand. “But we needed to do that to break through the segment.” With a tiered lighting arrangement and a pointy grille that were not at all like any contemporary Jeep, the Cherokee certainly stood out. But that was the intention: make an impact as Jeep returned with a vengeance to the segment dominated by names like CR-V and RAV4. The strategy worked, with the Cherokee selling well and nobody mentioning the “weird” styling ever again. “It did what it was supposed to do, it called attention to the vehicle,” says Mark Allen, Head of Jeep design. But when it was time to develop the refreshed 2019 Cherokee , he was asked to significantly tamp down on the crossover’s boldness – … [Read more...] about 2019 Jeep Cherokee Gets A More Traditional Face, Roomier Interior
President’s Trip to Lone Star: Why Texans Don’t Buy Into Narrative of Biden Being Consoler-in-Chief
The latest winter storm could become "the costliest disaster" in Texas' history, "potentially exceeding the $125 billion in damage from Hurricane Harvey", The Texas Tribune highlighted on Thursday. On 20 February, Biden approved the Texas Disaster Declaration providing financial aid to the state. However, many rural Texan counties have been literally left out in the cold, according to the news outlet. State is Split Over Biden's Performance Biden's visit has prompted a heated debate on Twitter, with some Americans hailing the trip while the others have lambasted the president for coming "too late" to the winter storm-battered state. "Thank you President Biden for visiting Texas and helping us to get back on our feet", wrote former Democratic Representative Beto O'Rourke. "I mean it’s only been two weeks but hey at least 'his empathy will be on display'", tweeted Donald Trump Jr. "A little late: Biden, First Lady to tour ‘Frozen Texas’ as temps rise to a pleasant 77 … [Read more...] about President’s Trip to Lone Star: Why Texans Don’t Buy Into Narrative of Biden Being Consoler-in-Chief

Floor curling: a new winter sports trend in Chinese schools
Video Player Close YINCHUAN, March 1 (Xinhua) -- With schoolmates and her coach standing along the track and staring at the red curling in her hand, Li Jiajie chose to ignore them and focused on the yellow curling in the circle at the track's end - that is her goal. "Go!" At the team leader's order, Li pushed forward the red curling stone, successfully attacking a yellow one, and scoring a point. "The secret is to keep calm no matter how nervous you are, and you have to focus on your goal in the distance rather than the curling stone in your hand," said Li coolly amid the applause. The 12-year-old Li is a sixth-grade student of a primary school in Yanchi County of northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. The students are competing on two floor curling tracks at the school's library. In 2019, China proposed to take the opportunity of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics to develop winter sports and aimed to engage some 300 million people. Many of China's schools … [Read more...] about Floor curling: a new winter sports trend in Chinese schools
