Have you ever seen a bird sitting contently on a tree and wondered whether it will be afraid of the branch breaking? The bird in all likelihood doesn’t have that fear because fundamentally it’s trust doesn’t lie in the branch — it lies in its wings. The fear of external factors and rather than trust in one’s own capabilities often stifle innovation and creativity. Perhaps that’s why Apple took a quantum leap of faith by launching its own silicon chip — called M1 — and with it a new range of MacBook devices. MacBook Air has been a perennial favourite with many but the M1 chip — as per Apple’s claims — puts it on a higher pedestal. For almost three months, we have been using the M1 MacBook Air as our daily driver and we have gone back and forth on our views about the laptop. In this review we find out how good a laptop MacBook Air is. And whether it has the wherewithal to be the absolute game changer Apple claims it is. Court ruling on gay father’s adoption appeal: MSF says to consider if policies need to be reviewed
SINGAPORE: The Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) on Monday (Dec 17) said that it respects the High Court's ruling to allow a gay Singaporean father to adopt his biological son, but that the ministry will consider if the relevant policies need to be reviewed. MSF's comments come after the man, a 46-year-old pathologist,on Monday won the right to adopt his five-year-old biological son who was born via a surrogate in the United States, in a landmark court ruling for Singapore. READ: Gay father permitted to adopt biological son born via surrogacy, in first for Singapore "MSF respects the court’s decision," said an MSF spokesperson. EU regulator starts a review of Russia’s COVID-19 vaccine
MOSCOW: The European Medicines Agency (EMA) said it has started a rolling review of Sputnik V, many months after the vaccine was first approved for use in Russia and after dozens of countries around the world have authorised it. In a statement on Thursday (Mar 4), the European regulator said the review is based on results from lab studies and research in adults, which suggests the vaccine may help protect against coronavirus. Despite skepticism about Russia’s hasty introduction of the vaccine, which was rolled out before it had completed late-stage trials, the vaccine appears to be safe and effective. According to a study published in the journal Lancet, Sputnik V was about 91 per cent effective in preventing people from becoming severely ill with COVID-19. READ: Russian scientists say Sputnik V vaccine performs well against COVID-19 mutations The EMA has not set a date for when its expert group might meet to assess Sputnik V data to decide if it should be approved across … [Read more...] about EU regulator starts a review of Russia’s COVID-19 vaccine

Skoda Kodiaq Coupe To Be Called Kodiaq GT
Another crossover is in the works and it will likely be a B-segment model. Originally announced back in March, the “coupe” version of the Skoda Kodiaq large SUV is going to carry the “GT” suffix based on a roadmap shown recently at a presentation in China. Taking into account it will have a more sloped roofline that will surely eat into the rear headroom (and trunk), there’s a good chance it will be available strictly as a five seater unlike the regular model that you can optionally order with seven seats. Revealed: Skoda Kodiaq GT Revealed As Brand's Flagship Model In China Skoda has already expressed its interest as far as coupe-SUV mashups are concerned with the Vision E , but that will remain strictly an electric concept for the time being. As to when we will see the first Skoda model to feature the much-criticized body style, the Kodiaq GT is expected to debut until the end of the decade. For those wondering why the Yeti is being shown on the … [Read more...] about Skoda Kodiaq Coupe To Be Called Kodiaq GT
‘Ballad of a White Cow’: Film Review | Berlin 2021
The widow of a man wrongfully executed for murder seeks justice in all the wrong places in Behtash Sanaeeha and Maryam Moghaddam’s Iranian drama. Adding another strong voice to the chorus of anti-capital-punishment films coming out of Iran is Ballad of a White Cow ( Ghasideyeh gave sefid ), a drama almost entirely centered on the wife of a condemned man who is wrongfully executed for murder in the opening scene. Played with huge amounts of feminine dignity by Maryam Moghaddam, who co-directed with Behtash Sanaeeha, the widow Mina is shown to be refreshingly capable of raising her deaf daughter on her own and navigating the minefield of a highly misogynistic society — and even (gasp) of finding love. But as hostility against Mina builds from her family, neighbors and the authorities, disaster looms and the story grows more suspenseful, teetering on the edge of melodrama. Fortunately, the realism of the acting and the classic, restrained camerawork keep things on a believable … [Read more...] about ‘Ballad of a White Cow’: Film Review | Berlin 2021
Allow taxis, private-hire drivers to use bus stops and lanes: Industry associations
SINGAPORE: Taxi drivers and private-hire drivers could be allowed to pick up and drop off passengers at bus stops and bus lanes in the future, if recommendations from two industry associations are accepted. The recommendations by the National Private Hire Vehicles Association (NPHVA) and National Taxi Association (NTA) are in response to a call by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) for feedback on the Land Transport Master Plan 2040. The master plan should "actively involve chauffeured services as part of a seamless and well-connected public transport network", the two associations said in media release on Wednesday (Dec 19). They reasoned that with Singapore facing an ageing population, workplace decentralisation, a rise in freelance workers or workers with dynamic work arrangements and families with growing childcare demand, there will be a need for more flexible or shorter transportation. "Rigidity arising from fixed routes, fixed locations of MRT stations and bus stops … [Read more...] about Allow taxis, private-hire drivers to use bus stops and lanes: Industry associations
The Highs and Lows of NYTW’s
Fredi Walker-Browne and friends at NYTW’s benefit. Photo: Jon Burklund/ZANNI Productions New York Theatre Workshop punches far above its weight. The gutsy little theater on East 4th Street, just in recent seasons, has produced shows like Slave Play, Once , and Hadestown, all of which later traveled uptown to play successfully on Broadway. Its primary impact on the theatrical Zeitgeist, though, struck way back in 1996, with the super-blockbuster Rent , Jonathan Larson’s rock adaptation of Puccini’s La Bohème. To celebrate the show’s silver anniversary, NYTW organized its annual fundraising benefit as a kind of birthday celebration. Between solicitations for donations, it invited current workshop collaborators to talk about Rent ’s impact on their work, Zoomed with old cast and crew members to share their memories of making the show, and presented new interpretations of a few Rent songs by the current crop of Broadway stars. Daphne Rubin-Vega videoed in, looking … [Read more...] about The Highs and Lows of NYTW’s
