SINGAPORE: It is estimated that there are 78,000 persons above the age of 60 living with dementia in Singapore today. This number is expected to go beyond 100,000 by 2030, as Singapore grapples with a burgeoning ageing population. 100,000 isn’t merely a statistic. Behind this number is a challenging story of the human condition, for stats belie the lives and faces affected by this condition, especially loved ones playing the role of caregivers. Think about the mounting pressure faced by caregivers on a daily basis as they deal with cognitive and psychological symptoms so unpredictable that it is hard to put on a brave front while they watch their loved ones fade away. THE ROAD TO DIAGNOSIS People generally view dementia as a normal part of ageing, that as you age, memory is just an element that fades. On the contrary, as of recent, we see more young-onset cases – more individuals below 65 are being diagnosed with dementia. It is often hard to grasp the condition of … [Read more...] about Commentary: Dementia caregivers put on a brave front – while watching loved ones fade away

Arsenal’s Arteta targets Europa League glory as top-four hopes fade
REUTERS: Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has described Thursday's Europa League last-32 second-leg clash against Benfica as a 'final' after Sunday's 1-0 home defeat by Manchester City further dented their hopes of a top-four finish in the Premier League. Raheem Sterling's goal after 75 seconds condemned Arsenal to their third defeat in four games and left them in 10th with 34 points, 11 points adrift of fourth-placed West Ham United. If Arsenal do miss out on a top-four spot, they can qualify for the Champions League by winning the Europa League and Arteta said the competition had taken on added significance, with their tie against Portuguese club Benfica finely poised after a 1-1 draw in the first leg. "The Europa League's always been really important but obviously every defeat now in the league will put us in a difficult position," Arteta said. "We have to take it game by game, we need a run of games. I think we are having a big run of performances but we lost two or three … [Read more...] about Arsenal’s Arteta targets Europa League glory as top-four hopes fade
GameStop jumps nearly 19%; ‘meme stocks’ fade after another wild ride
GameStop Corp shares rallied, finishing with double-digit gains despite a sharp retreat from session highs and leading a surprise resurgence of so-called "stonks" championed online by passionate retail investors. GameStop shares , which doubled their value on Wednesday, hit $160 at Thursday's open before being halted after several minutes of trading and fell to around $129 before the second halt. The stock closed for the day at $108.73 for an 18.5% gain, after soaring almost 90% at the session peak. Other "stonks" or "meme stocks" popular on sites such as Reddit 's WallStreetBets also saw their rallies fade. Headphone company Koss Corp closed up 16.8% gain after rocketing nearly 61% during the session. AMC Entertainment ended down nearly 9% after jumping more than 15% during the session. Analysts were puzzled by the rally that came even as the benchmark S&P dropped 2.4%. Some ruled out a short squeeze like the one in January that battered hedge funds that had bet against … [Read more...] about GameStop jumps nearly 19%; ‘meme stocks’ fade after another wild ride
Most traffic junctions to have red-amber-green arrows instead of discretionary right turns by 2023
SINGAPORE: As part of efforts to increase pedestrian safety, red-amber-green turning arrows will be introduced at the majority of traffic junctions over the next three years. These arrows – which allow motorists to turn only when there is a green arrow – have already been installed at more than 300 junctions, and will be installed at 1,200 junctions by 2023, said Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Transport Baey Yam Keng on Thursday (Mar 5). Mr Baey was responding to Hougang MP Png Eng Huat during the Committee of Supply debate for the Ministry of Transport. Mr Png noted that there was an accident on Jan 6 involving a student who was hit by a vehicle making a discretionary right turn – where motorists can turn even in the absence of a green arrow – if they determine it is safe to do so. “The discretionary turning on green rule is a recipe for accidents to happen because there are two green lights in operation at the same time - one for the vehicle to turn right and the other … [Read more...] about Most traffic junctions to have red-amber-green arrows instead of discretionary right turns by 2023
‘Late Night’s Seth Meyers Talks 1,000 Shows, ‘A Closer Look’, Amber Ruffin, ‘The Thorn Birds’ & Weighing A Return To The Studio
Seth Meyers has, like the rest of the late-night community, been doing his NBC talkshow from his own house since the end of March. Late Night With Seth Meyers , filmed in the comedian’s attic, has been gaining particular steam thanks to his A Closer Look segments, which dissect the craziness of the news, as well as Amber Ruffin’s takeover of the start of his show following the death of George Floyd and the subsequent protests against police brutality. Taking over from Jimmy Fallon in 2014, Meyers has now made more than 1,000 episodes of his show, which is run by Mike Shoemaker and exec produced by Lorne Michaels. Deadline spoke to Meyers during his two-week hiatus, which he said he was enjoying but admitted that he was “chomping at the bit” to return to structure, even if wasn’t the structure he was used to. Commentary: When will COVID-19 end? History suggests diseases fade but are never truly gone
COLUMBIA, South Carolina: When will the pandemic end? All these months in, with over 37 million COVID-19 cases and more than 1 million deaths globally, you may be wondering, with increasing exasperation, how long this will continue. Since the beginning of the pandemic, epidemiologists and public health specialists have been using mathematical models to forecast the future in an effort to curb the coronvirus’ spread. But infectious disease modeling is tricky. Epidemiologists warn that models are not crystal balls, and even sophisticated versions, like those that combine forecasts or use machine learning, can’t necessarily reveal when the pandemic will end or how many people will die. As a historian who studies disease and public health, I suggest that instead of looking forward for clues, you can look back to see what brought past outbreaks to a close – or didn’t. Commentary: Wuhan virus – how prepared is your company? What gets green, amber and red rankings
SINGAPORE: Governments around Asia are racing to implement measures to stem the spread of the deadly Wuhan virus. Many have rolled out border health screenings, including Singapore and Malaysia, travel bans or require civil servants to work from home, like Hong Kong. In the corporate space, many companies and facilities management in Asia have already implemented hygiene measures such as entrance temperature checks, restaurant or co-working space location closures, increased availability of hand sanitisers, and, at the behest of governments, reviewed their business continuity plan. These high-stakes efforts cannot be understated, and require a wide range of actions, from assurances that frontline staff are safe to ensuring manufacturing operations can continue apace. Aeon, Japan’s largest supermarket operator, expects sales to plummet by half, spokesperson Makoto Sueyoshi said on Monday (Jan 27). Apple has already provided a wider-than-usual forecast for this quarter’s … [Read more...] about Commentary: Wuhan virus – how prepared is your company? What gets green, amber and red rankings
Football: European leagues’ domestic TV revenue set to drop as competition fades
MANCHESTER, England: Revenues from football's domestic broadcast rights deals are expected to fall across Europe's top leagues this year, due to a lack of competition between broadcasters, in a further blow to COVID-19 hit clubs who have spent almost a year without fans in stadiums. Italy's Serie A could announce their deals for the 2021-2024 cycle later this week with revenue unlikely to meet the €1.15 billion (US$1.39 billion) a year target and could fall slightly short of the 973 million a year current deal. With the Premier League, the French Ligue 1 and Spain's Liga also due to negotiate deals for the next cycle this year, there is little optimism that domestic rights, which had grown strongly over the past two decades, will bring a much-needed cash boost. Germany's Bundesliga concluded their deal last year, marking a slight fall. "Everyone agrees that (revenue) will go down," says European television rights consultant Pierre Maes, author of a book on the sector. Mysterious stripes spotted over Russia in satellite images — and NASA is perplexed
Near the Markha River in Arctic Siberia, the earth ripples in ways that scientists don't fully understand. Earlier this week, NASA researchers posted a series of satellite images of the peculiar wrinkled landscape to the agency's Earth Observatory website . Taken with the Landsat 8 satellite over several years, the photos show the land on both sides of the Markha River rippling with alternating dark and light stripes. The puzzling effect is visible in all four seasons, but it is most pronounced in winter, when white snow makes the contrasting pattern even more stark. Why is this particular section of Siberia so stripy? Scientists aren't totally sure, and several experts offered NASA conflicting explanations. Related: Earth's 8 biggest mysteries One possible explanation is written in the icy ground. This region of the Central Siberian Plateau spends about 90% of the year covered in permafrost, according to NASA, though it occasionally thaws for brief intervals. … [Read more...] about Mysterious stripes spotted over Russia in satellite images — and NASA is perplexed
I Found My Niche on TikTok—You Can Too
The first time I heard about TikTok was in the fall of 2019. My coworker at an NYC coffee shop told me how Charli D'Amelio, the most-followed person on TikTok, filmed a video at our location. “Who’s that?” I asked as she tried to explain the app and D’Amelio to me. As a 22-year-old recent college graduate, I thought TikTok still referred to the Ke$ha song. I felt out of the loop for once and dismissed TikTok as just another social media app that would fade away. At the start of the pandemic, though, I was newly unemployed and forced to move back into the home of my parents in Texas (hopefully temporarily). I finally downloaded TikTok and made a free account, and spent hours scrolling mindlessly to numb the pain of the world. When I first saw a video of someone playing a vinyl record, it clicked. Being home, I had access to 11 years’ worth of vinyl albums that I’d started to collect as a hobby in 2010 at 13 years old—something that was such a massive part of my life. I’d always … [Read more...] about I Found My Niche on TikTok—You Can Too
