Latest Anti-Coup Demonstrations in Myanmar Turn Deadly

At least two protesters are dead in Myanmar Monday amid another day of public demonstrations against last month’s military overthrow of the civilian government. The latest fatalities occurred in the city of Myitkyina, the capital of northern Kachin state.  Photos taken by reporters with VOA’s Burmese service depict gunshot victims lying in the street in a pool of blood, some being attended to by emergency personnel. Another photo showed a woman being helped to her feet after suffering a gruesome arm injury. The latest deaths coincided with a general strike launched by an alliance of nine trade unions in an attempt to back the anti-coup movement and pressure members of the military junta. "To continue economic and business activities as usual...will only benefit the military as they repress the energy of the Myanmar people," they said in a joint statement. "The time to take action in defense of our democracy is now.” Myanmar: Trade Unions Call for Economic … [Read more...] about Latest Anti-Coup Demonstrations in Myanmar Turn Deadly

3 protesters killed in Myanmar; shops and factories closed as workers go on strike

YANGON: Three protesters were killed in Myanmar on Monday (Mar 8), witnesses said, as demonstrators across the country sought to paralyse the economy with strike action following a weekend of night raids and arrests. Shops, factories and banks were closed in the main city of Yangon. Photos posted on Facebook showed the bodies of two men lying on the street in the northern town of Myitkyina. Witnesses said they were taking part in a protest when police fired stun grenades and tear gas. Several people were then hit by gunfire from buildings nearby. One witness, who said he helped move the bodies, told Reuters two people were shot in the head and died on the spot. Three people were injured. "How inhumane to kill unarmed civilians," said the witness, a 20-year-old man. "We must have our right to protest peacefully." It was not immediately clear who fired on the protesters although both police and the military were at the protest, the witnesses said. China says it is ready to engage with relevant parties to ease Myanmar situation

The Chinese government's top diplomat, Wang Yi, said on Sunday that Beijing is ready to engage with relevant parties to ease the situation in Myanmar, where the military seized power last month. China's friendship is with all of Myanmar, State Councillor Wang told a news conference on the sidelines of China's annual gathering of parliament. Meanwhile, authorities in Myanmar have asked India to return several police officers who have sought refuge to avoid taking orders from a military junta that seized power in the Southeast Asian country last month, an official in northeast India said on Saturday. Around 30 Myanmar police and their family members came across the border seeking refuge in recent days, as the junta's suppression of protesters turned increasingly violent, with dozens killed since the Feb. 1 coup. The senior-most official in Champhai, a district in the Indian state of Mizoram, told Reuters that she had received a letter from her counterpart in Myanmar's Falam … [Read more...] about China says it is ready to engage with relevant parties to ease Myanmar situation

Lexus LFA Drag Races Mercedes SLR McLaren 722 Edition Roadster

These supercars still have plenty of speed. Neither the Lexus LFA nor the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722 Edition Roadster is on the market anymore, but they still have impressive performance. In this video from Lovecars , Tiff Needel gets behind the wheel of the Lexus, and the owner is at the controls of the SLR for the drag race. The LFA remains a very special supercar in large part because of its naturally aspirated 4.8-liter V10 engine that can rev to 9,500 rpm. The result is one of the best-sounding road cars ever. Gallery: 2010 Lexus LFA 8 Photos Before McLaren got really serious about building its own vehicles, there was the SLR as a joint venture with Mercedes. It packed a 5.4-liter supercharged V8 with extra tuning for the 722 Edition making 641 horsepower (478 kilowatts), which was 84 hp (63 kW) more than the standard version. Myanmar protests continue

YANGON: Anti-coup protesters gathered across Myanmar on Monday, answering a trade union call for a general strike following a weekend of night raids and arrests. The country has been in turmoil since a February 1 coup ousted civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi from power and triggered mass protests against the new military junta. The police and military have responded with an increasingly brutal crackdown on demonstrators, with more than 50 people killed and nearly 1,800 arrested. Despite the risk, protesters rallied in parts of the commercial capital Yangon, the second-largest city Mandalay and other towns around the country. Monday’s demonstrations followed an appeal by trade unions for mass walkouts to bring the economy to a standstill. “To continue economic and business activities as usual… will only benefit the military as they repress the energy of the Myanmar people,” 18 unions said in a statement. “The time to take action in defense of our democracy is now.” … [Read more...] about Myanmar protests continue

Bank of Thailand Leaves Key Interest Rate Unchanged at Record Low

The Bank of Thailand has left its key interest rate unchanged at a record low on Wednesday, preserving its limited policy ammunition, but warned of risks as the country deals with a fresh wave of coronavirus infections. Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy continues to recover but risks remain high and it could grow less than the previously forecast 3.2% this year, Monetary Policy Committee Secretary Titanun Mallikamas told a news conference. The Bank of Thailand’s committee members voted unanimously to keep the one-day repurchase rate unchanged at 0.50% for a sixth straight meeting, after three cuts in the first half of 2020 to mitigate the impact of the pandemic. The tourism-reliant economy still needs support from low interest rates and monetary policy will remain accommodative, he told Reuters . The BOT said in a statement the impact of the recent outbreak on the Thai economy would be less severe than last year due to less strict containment measures, but it expects … [Read more...] about Bank of Thailand Leaves Key Interest Rate Unchanged at Record Low
