The frozen city: Snow and ice covers Russian ghost town abandoned since 2013 due its freezing -50C temperatures

Eerie images show snow and ice covered buildings in Russia 's Sementnozavodsky region. The images were taken in abandoned buildings in a settlement 11 miles (17 km) from the coal-mining town of Vorkuta. The region reaches extremely cold temperatures as low as minus 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit) in the winter months. Photos show how the snow has settled to cover the floors and furniture of the buildings while huge icicles have formed at the windows. An image taken from above shows how the snow has even formed a layer over the roofs of the buildings. Other images show how abandoned lorries have been buried during the snowfall. Migration out of the region each year from 2013 has turned some settlements into ghost towns amid the freezing temperatures and rising unemployment. The coal-mining town of Vorkuta is known as the easternmost and the coldest town in Europe, with short, cool summers and extremely cold and snowy winters. Cartoonist Turns Audi R8 Into A Wicked Art Car

Marketing meets art. Art cars are not new. Artists use the automobile as a blank canvas for both beautiful and exciting works of art. No two are alike, and that’s the beauty of the art car. BMW is probably most famous for such creations , with a plethora of glammed-up examples. But other automakers have dipper their creative toes in the water, such as Rolls-Royce and Alfa Romeo in the recent past. Audi has, in the past, done an art car as well, but the Audi R8 here is not an official project of the automaker. Instead, aftermarket tuning company ABT Sportsline, known for taking performance Audi vehicles and turning them straight to insanity, commissioned the car. Hospitals prepared for spike in dengue cases amid concerns about rising numbers

SINGAPORE: Hospitals are prepared to cope with a possible spike in dengue cases in the coming months, with data showing high numbers of infections. “The number of COVID-19 cases is declining and we aim to continue current preventive efforts to control the spread of COVID-19. We have sufficient capacity to cope with (a) dengue surge,” said Professor Leo Yee Sin, executive director of National Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCID). Adding that the entire healthcare system has been activated to cope with COVID-19 cases while ensuring that other patients receive the care they need, Prof Leo noted that similar efforts will be deployed if more dengue cases require hospital care. Doctors in Tan Tock Seng Hospital’s (TTSH) emergency department are closely monitoring the situation, she added. “We keep a lookout for signs and symptoms that suggest dengue among fever patients, and carry out the necessary dengue tests. We also regularly review our hospital capacity to ensure that we are … [Read more...] about Hospitals prepared for spike in dengue cases amid concerns about rising numbers

Joel Schumacher, director of St Elmo’s Fire and Batman Forever, dies at 80

Joel Schumacher, the eclectic and brazen filmmaker who dressed New York department store windows before shepherding the Brat Pack to the big screen in St Elmo's Fire and steering the Batman franchise into its most baroque territory in Batman Forever and Batman & Robin, has died. He was 80. A representative for Schumacher said the filmmaker died Monday (Jun 22) in New York after a year-long battle with cancer. A native New Yorker, Schumacher was first a sensation in the fashion world after attending Parsons School of Design and decorating Henri Bendel's windows. His entry to film came first as a costume designer. Schumacher dressed a pair of Woody Allen movies in the 1970s: Interiors and Sleeper. He also penned the screenplays to a pair of musicals: The Wiz and Sparkle. As a director, he established himself as a filmmaker of great flare, if not often good reviews, in a string of mainstream films in the '80s and '90s. To the frequent frustration of critics but the delight … [Read more...] about Joel Schumacher, director of St Elmo’s Fire and Batman Forever, dies at 80

French ex-president Nicolas Sarkozy sentenced to prison over corruption case

Judges on Monday found former French President Nicolas Sarkozy guilty of corruption after he tried to bribe a top lawyer with the promise of a job in Monaco. He will serve a one-year prison term. The 66-year-old has faced multiple graft accusations since leaving office in 2012 and prosecutors successfully argued he tried to obtain information about a separate probe into alleged financial impropriety in his party. He did so by offering to help judge Gilbert Azibert secure a well-paid legal adviser role in the principality of Monaco. Nicolas Sarkozy is the first modern French head of state to actually appear in court Sarkozy told the court he had "never committed the slightest act of corruption." The graft and influence-peddling charges — among several legal cases against him — carried a maximum sentence of 10 years and a fine of up to €1 million ($1.2 million). New social norms, disruption to routines: Trying times for autistic community as Malaysia enters COVID-19 recovery phase

KUALA LUMPUR: These days, mornings start at 7am for Mohd Adli Yahya, 56, and his son, Luqman Shariff Mohd Adli, 21. The two of them then head to the supermarket at 8am to purchase ingredients such as chicken, onions and spices for their ayam percik catering business, under Mohd Adli's food establishment Autism Cafe Project. To accommodate senior citizens and people with disabilities, several supermarkets and hypermarkets are opening earlier than their usual hours shortly after Malaysia's movement control order (MCO) was put in place on Mar 18. This allows Luqman, who is on the autism spectrum, to shop at ease before the rest of the customers arrive and form a long queue at the entrance. “There aren't many people during this time, so social distancing isn't an issue. And even if we were to enter a crowded place, he’s been slowly learning," Mohd Adli told CNA. Once the shopping is done, the father and son go home and start preparing the chicken. Although Luqman's … [Read more...] about New social norms, disruption to routines: Trying times for autistic community as Malaysia enters COVID-19 recovery phase
