Sounds resident remembers ‘washing machine’ water for days after Japan quake

SUPPLIED Large surge coming into Tokomaru Bay. Narelle Guard spent Friday morning listening to tsunami updates on the radio, having watched the mussel boats leave the bay below her hillside home. Guard has experienced many tsunami surges in her 48 years living at Te Whanganui/Port Underwood, chief among them the Japanese earthquake in 2011 . “The tides swirl around in the current and stir up all the mud. After the Japanese earthquake, we had four days of the tides rushing back and forwards, like a big washing machine,” she said. Supplied Residents on safe ground in Whakatāne are waiting to see whether a tsunami comes over the horizon or not. Guard had yet to see any effects from Friday’s earthquakes, speaking about lunchtime on Friday, but felt “safe enough” in her house 60 metres above sea level. ‘Landings’ art exhibition in Otara marks 140 years since arrival of first Indians in Fiji

Ever wonder how the Indians ever got to Fiji? A visual and digital art exhibition now on at the Fresh Gallery in Auckland aims to mark the arrival of the first Indians to Fiji shores - 140 years ago. Landings - an exhibition by five iTaukei (indigenous Fijian) and Indo-Fijian artists - marks the beginning of a new chapter in Fiji's history when the first batch of about 500 Indians were brought in by the British rulers to work in the sugar cane plantations as labourers. Since then, more than 60,000 Indians were brought in over 87 voyages through to 1916 (when the indenture system ended) - many making Fiji their home. This exhibition is a mediation on loss, removal, grief and how communities come together and have the capacity to remake  themselves. Landings artists delve into this colonial narrative and question how past and current histories are acknowledged. Emele Ugavule, Zaiba Khan, Shivanjani Lal, Sangeeta Singh, and Luisa Tora use video, printmaking and sculpture … [Read more...] about ‘Landings’ art exhibition in Otara marks 140 years since arrival of first Indians in Fiji

Why Walgreens Is Building Its Own Universal Health-Care System

advertisement advertisement advertisement Everyone knows Gary Gustin. When he walks through the halls of L-3 Communications’ Camden, New Jersey, office, he gets smiles and hellos from everyone he meets. Gustin isn’t the CEO or the guy who developed the defense contractor’s secure BlackBerry substitute for President Obama. He’s a Walgreens employee. advertisement advertisement Not that any of L-3’s 1,100 workers in Camden know, or care. When they see Gustin, they see the nurse manager who has attended to them for nine years. “They see us as a friendly face, and they trust us,” he says. “And we have to work very closely with them, so we need it that way.” L-3’s employees have what all Americans, particularly the almost 46 million uninsured, want from the health-care system: convenience, ease of access, transparent pricing (in L-3’s case, free), and widespread availability. Small Pennsylvania Town Celebrates Its Single UPS Driver

Dauphin, Pennsylvania, community members surprised the town’s one UPS driver with a celebration, and a gift, on Tuesday. Fewer than 800 people call Dauphin their home. Sitting on the bank of the Susquehanna River, the hamlet cannot even claim a single traffic light. But, like many small communities, Dauphin residents are especially close-knit. After a year of 60-80 hour weeks struggling to provide vital supplies to his town, UPS deliver man Chad Turns discovered just how much he means to his neighbors. “Everyone knows how special Chad is,” resident Jenny Shickley told NBC’s TODAY. “If he thinks something might be a gift – and this happened to us – he literally didn’t deliver it when the kids were in the yard, he just drove by, and then he drove all the way back to our house after dark, because he was nervous it was a gift and didn’t want to ruin it for the kids.” But this account of Turns’ persistent goodwill is just one of many. “On Facebook, another friend mentioned there … [Read more...] about Small Pennsylvania Town Celebrates Its Single UPS Driver
