The government shutdown is now stretching into 2019. Photo: Jim Lo Scalzo/EPA-EFE/REX/Shutterstock The 115th Congress will conclude on January 2 with roughly one-fourth of the federal government shut down. The following day, the 116th Congress will be sworn in. The House will quickly elect Nancy Pelosi as its new Speaker, and approve a package of Democratic-designed rules for the chamber that will govern its operations over the next two years. And then Pelosi is expected to take the reins of the Democratic strategy for dealing with the Trump-engineered shutdown with a formal vote, as Roll Call’s Lindsey McPherson explains: House Democrats will vote Thursday, the first day of the new Congress in which they’ll be in the majority, to reopen the government with six full-year appropriations bills and a short-term continuing resolution for the Department of Homeland Security, according to a senior Democratic aide. In other words, Democrats will seek to detach the … [Read more...] about The Government Shutdown Will Continue As Long As Trump Thinks It Benefits Him

Courtney Lawes used to dream of winning Grand Slams — but at Wimbledon rather than Twickenham. The England star is in the mix to start against visitors France in round two of the Six Nations on Sunday, with Maro Itoje out for at least two matches with knee-ligament damage suffered in Saturday's win over Ireland. Lawes is the most experienced forward available to head coach Eddie Jones — his next cap will be his 70th, and only three England locks have won more. For a decade he has made brutal hits, yet he started out smashing tennis balls rather than opponents on the rugby pitch. “Growing up, I didn’t have a set plan— other than to play sport,” said Lawes, who turns 30 on February 23 — the day England play Wales in Cardiff. “I loved football and tennis, which I played all the time. Tennis gave me good hand-eye co-ordination and helped me in other ways — you’re on your own. You can’t rely on anyone else to do it for … [Read more...] about Six Nations 2019: England’s Courtney Lawes reveals surprising past as TENNIS player
LONDON (AP) — British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is preparing to take on opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn in the last head-to-head debate before a general election in six days — and facing allegations that he’s shirking tough questions about his character and record. Friday’s televised showdown comes amid an ongoing controversy over Johnson’s decision to avoid an in-depth interview with Andrew Neil, a BBC journalist known for his forensic questioning. Four other party leaders, including Corbyn, endured such a grilling, and Neil has accused Johnson of “running scared.″ Neil issued a challenge to Johnson on national television Thursday, saying political leaders in the last two U.K. elections had agreed to be interviewed by him — “All of them. Until this one.” He said Johnson needed to answer questions about trust, “and why at so many times in his career, in politics and journalism, critics and sometimes even … [Read more...] about Johnson under pressure ahead of final UK election TV debate
Is history about to repeat itself? With less than a week to go until Britain’s third general election in five years, the Conservatives have failed to confront any of the shortcomings that led to them losing their majority in 2017. Their manifesto offered nothing new in terms of policy for young people or remain voters – two key groups who voted overwhelmingly against the Conservatives in 2017. Boris Johnson’s campaign has instead focused on winning the support of leave voters, attempting to avoid making any new promises and relentlessly criticising Jeremy Corbyn. At first glance, this strategy would appear to be working: in the fourth week of the election campaign, the Conservatives were 10 points ahead of Labour on average in the polls, and on a universal swing would have won a majority of 46 seats. But beneath the headline figures in the polls, the numbers tell a story that should leave the Conservatives deeply worried. In 2017, there were three main factors that … [Read more...] about The Tories may think they’ve already won – but the stats tell a different story

The Electoral Commission has fined the European Movement, an active participant in the EU referendum which helped set up the official Remain campaign, for filing false returns. The group’s ultimate goal is “the creation of a Pan‐European federation as the first step towards peace and world federalism”, according to its youth wing’s constitution, and it is heavily funded by the European Union. In fact, the European Movement’s memorandum of association literally sets out its remit as “propaganda and other activities” — which it fulfils as part of a wider network of so-called civil society groups paid by the EU to lobby for greater European integration. The European Movement took credit for the launch of Britain Stronger in Europe (BSE), the official Remain campaign which has now been rebadged as Open Britain on social media, with its then chairman Laura Sandys acting as BSE’s original director — a … [Read more...] about Major Pro-EU Remain Campaign Group Fined for Making False Declarations During EU Referendum
By Perez Brisibe Air Vice Marshal Frank Ajobena (Retd), is a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC in Delta State and was one of the proponents for the emergence of a governorship candidate of the party from Delta North senatorial district for the 2019 governorship elections in the state. In this interview, he spoke on why the party performed woefully at the polls accusing some leaders of the party including Minister of State for Petroleum, Dr Ibe Kachikwu and former governor of the State, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan of not actively supporting the party’s drive. Why we wanted an APC candidate from Delta North From the beginning, some of us were committed to a Delta North candidate. As you are aware, we had two parallel state committee and it was obvious to me that one of the committees was hijacked by some people who wanted a candidate from Delta Central and the only option I had was to seek a platform for a northern candidate that will enable the party to win and that … [Read more...] about The internal conspiracies that destroyed Delta APC – AVM Ajobena
