In an early scene of Singin' in the Rain, Donald O'Connor's character tells Gene Kelly's character about the importance of comedy for their audiences and proceeds to perform a physically exhausting slapstick comedic dance number. O'Connor performs many pratfalls, jumps, gags, and backflips, making this number possibly one of the epitomes of physical comedy. Urban legend has it that O'Connor was bedridden for days after filming. The sequence is often paid tribute to, with the show Glee attempting a reenactment, along with a performance of the song from Joseph Gordon-Levitt for Saturday Night Live. … [Read more...] about 100 Greatest Movie Songs From 100 Years of Film

‘One Night in Miami’ movie review: Regina King makes a thrilling directorial debut
When Brown tells Clay he is looking at a movie career, Clay says, “Being the sacrificial Negro ain't the same as the NFL”. To which Brown calmly says, “We are all gladiators.” Brown displays a quiet understanding of the ways of the world when he asks Malcolm if his militancy is “about trying to prove something to the white people or the black people?” His take on racism, of white people congratulating themselves for treating black people almost like human beings is similarly acute when he says, “Do you expect a dog to give you a medal for not kicking it that day?” … [Read more...] about ‘One Night in Miami’ movie review: Regina King makes a thrilling directorial debut

When Coates played it back home, he discovered that it was not a conventional record. “It was recorded on one side at 78 rpm. The tune on it was ‘Rock Around The Clock’ by Bill Haley, but the strangest thing about it was that it was made using an old X-ray film. Sea shanties have taken over TikTok. Here’s why
Since roughly the end of December, TikTok has seen a rise in interest in videos of people not just singing sea shanties, but also crafting impressive, a cappella arrangements of the tunes traditionally sung by crews on merchant sailing ships. Thanks to the platform's capacity for collaboration, folks don't have to be on the same ship to sing together. So far, videos tagged with #seashanty have more than 89 million views. And that number continues to grow as word spreads. On Tuesday, Google Trends tweeted that "sea shanties" had been searched more than at any other time in the platform's history. Spotify says more than 12,000 sea shanty playlists have come into being since the end of December. … [Read more...] about Sea shanties have taken over TikTok. Here’s why
