A new poll shows President Donald Trump losing to every prospective Democratic nominee if the 2020 general election were held today. A Quinnipiac University survey released Tuesday shows Trump trailing to six Democrats vying for the party's nomination -- Joe Biden, Michael Bloomberg, Pete Buttigieg, Amy Klobuchar, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. Former Vice President Biden had the biggest lead on Trump compared to the other Democratic candidates. Fifty-one percent of registered voters polled said they would cast their ballot for Biden while 42 percent said they'd support Trump. The race was tighter between the president and the other Democrats. Senator Sanders was shown beating Trump by 8 percentage points and Senator Warren was shown defeating him by 7 percentage points. These results are similar to a poll conducted by Quinnipiac University in October. That survey showed Biden beating Trump by 11 percentage points, Sanders leading Trump by 7 percentage points and Warren defeating … [Read more...] about New National Poll Shows Every Prospective Democratic Nominee Beating Donald Trump

Trump on impeachment brink, but far from falling
For a man on the brink of becoming only the third US president to be impeached, Donald Trump sure sounds confident."You're so lucky I became your president," he boomed to cheering supporters late Tuesday in Hershey, Pennsylvania."A regular president would have been under the table, thumb in mouth, saying 'take me home, Mommy, this is too tough for me.'"Hours earlier in Washington, Democratic leaders unveiled two impeachment charges against Trump that the full House of Representatives, dominated by Democrats, will likely confirm in the near future. The Republican businessman is now so entangled in controversy that it takes a hardened Washington politics junkie merely to unravel the strands.Russia collusion, Ukraine quid pro quo, foreign emoluments clause, deep state coup -- the terminology alone illustrates the increasingly exotic political mess engulfing Trump. Mitt Romney under fire after comments caught on video
Mitt Romney was caught up in a fresh and damaging secret video controversy on Monday night, only hours after his campaign team tacitly admitted it was struggling and was going to have revise its campaign strategy. The video, showing Romney at a closed-doors fundraising event, captures him dismissing 47% of the nation as government-dependent. "My job is not to worry about those people," he says. He adds: "I'll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives." The release of the video, on the liberal Mother Jones website, came at an awkward moment for the Romney campaign amid reports of internal strife and bickering among his campaign managers. The Republican presidential candidate is also running behind Barack Obama in the polls, albeit only by 3%, after a lacklustre Republican convention in August. His campaign team announced on Monday morning that it would recalibrate its strategy and that, instead of focusing on criticising Obama, it will begin … [Read more...] about Mitt Romney under fire after comments caught on video
Dinner with Margaret Thatcher: the story of a secret supper
On a clear autumn night in 1982, a government Daimler pulled out of Downing Street and began its glide across London to a house in Ladbroke Grove. In the passenger seat was a personal protection officer. He had been to the house earlier that day to check the security arrangements for the evening and had decided there was no need to include sniffer dogs or metal detectors for the guests. (The Brighton bombing and the enhanced security that would come with it were two years away.) In the back was Margaret Thatcher, the prime minister. When they parked, she stepped out and entered the house without fanfare. Indeed someone had to whisper to the host, the historian Hugh Thomas, who had recently been created Baron Thomas of Swynnerton: "Behind you!" An impromptu receiving line formed. There was a sense of both sides sizing each other up, of mutual curiosity, of reciprocated suspicion. She was wearing blue. It made her stand out among the grey and black suits. When Margaret Thatcher died in … [Read more...] about Dinner with Margaret Thatcher: the story of a secret supper
Leslie Marshall: Democrats want to impeach Trump because they are patriots – not for political reasons
close Video House Democrats settle on two articles of impeachment against President Trump Democratic leadership says it is time to move forward, arguing the next election is in jeopardy; chief congressional correspondent Mike Emanuel reports from Capitol Hill. President Trump and his defenders claim the decision by House Democratic leaders Tuesday to propose two articles of impeachment against him is all about politics. They say the misconduct he is accused of is a hoax and that he is the victim of a witch hunt. Don’t believe them. Democrats are acting in spite of politics. They know impeachment could hurt them politically and perhaps even give Republicans a House majority in elections next year. And Democrats are acting even though they know the Republican-controlled Senate will acquit Trump in a trial and not throw him out of office. That’s because removing the president in a Senate trial takes 67 votes, and there are only 47 Democrats and allied … [Read more...] about Leslie Marshall: Democrats want to impeach Trump because they are patriots – not for political reasons
Opinion: Republicans don’t really have a choice about supporting Trump in the impeachment process
Democrats seem bewildered by Republicans’ inability to see President Trump as deserving impeachment. But it’s not all that mysterious. Republicans understandably don’t want to commit political suicide, either for themselves or for their party. Nearly all political observers acknowledge that a Republican who votes for impeachment would be inviting a primary challenge from a candidate who will defend Trump 100%. The latest polls show 94% of Republicans support the president and are against impeachment. It is also likely that Trump would campaign for any challenger who takes on a Republican incumbent voting for impeachment. Moreover, those who break with the party on Trump’s impeachment could have a tougher time in the general election, even if they win in the primary. This is especially true in competitive races, such as those of Susan Collins in Maine or Cory Gardner in Colorado. In districts that trend purple, every vote counts, and if turnout by either party is … [Read more...] about Opinion: Republicans don’t really have a choice about supporting Trump in the impeachment process

Why the Fed is about to become a ‘sideshow’
London (CNN Business)Happy Wednesday. A version of this story first appeared in CNN Business' Before the Bell newsletter. Not a subscriber? You can sign up right here. President Donald Trump wants the Federal Reserve to keep cutting interest rates. That looks unlikely — at least for now. Investors agree that the Fed, which announces its latest interest rate decision on Wednesday, will choose to sit tight for the time being. From strategists at Bank of America: "The Fed's communication since the October meeting has been crystal clear: policy is appropriate and there would need to be a 'material reassessment' of the outlook to adjust rates." A solid jobs report for November all but ensured that policy will remain unchanged. Things get much more interesting when looking ahead to 2020. Read More Wall Street's view: Goldman Sachs expects rates to stay on hold next year, with Fed members signaling one hike in 2021 and one in 2022. But not everyone agrees.
