The Memo: Specter of vaccine hesitancy rises after J&J blow
The pause in the use of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine announced Tuesday is virtually certain to exacerbate vaccine hesitancy, dealing a fresh blow to the nation’s efforts to recover from the pandemic. Vaccine hesitancy is on its way to becoming the main hurdle in the fight against the virus, experts say. Vaccinations are becoming more plentiful. The nation has recently been averaging more than 3 million vaccination shots per day, bringing relief to people desperate for protection against a virus that has claimed more than 560,000 lives in the United States. ADVERTISEMENT But what happens when all those people are vaccinated? Millions of Americans seem likely to decline the vaccine — and their reluctance is only heightened by any bad news, such as the suspension of the J&J vaccine. Vaccine hesitancy “is a significant worry,” said Larry Gostin, a Georgetown Law School professor and expert in public health. Gostin noted that reluctance to be vaccinated had … [Read more...] about The Memo: Specter of vaccine hesitancy rises after J&J blow

Around 675,000 Migrants in Sweden Not Self-Sufficient in Work, Receive State Benefits
Around 675,000 migrants living in Sweden are either on welfare benefits or are not able to support themselves through the work they do have, according to statistics from the Swedish Parliamentary Investigative Service (RUT). The figures were highlighted in a recent detailed report on migration and integration presented by the centre-right Moderate Party that states the figure, which was recorded in 2019, means that a large section of the migrant population makes less than 186,000 Swedish Kronor (£15,890/$21,852) per year. The report also cites another study by the Swedish Entrepreneurship Forum that revealed that between 1990 and 2016, it took migrants an average of four to five years to find a job and more than ten years for just half of new arrivals to find self-sufficient work. Swedish Professor: Integration of 2015 Migrants into Labour Force Has Been a Failure
Swedish economics professor Johan Eklund has criticised the government’s failure to integrate migrants who arrived in 2015 into the labour force. A total of 163,000 migrants came to Sweden during the height of the migrant crisis in 2015, and of those granted asylum, around 60,000 were given permanent residency. But despite efforts, just over half of those aged 20 to 64 with residence rights had worked at all in 2019. Around 11,900 migrants were said to be on local welfare programmes in 2019 while 10,000 benefitted from parental allowance and 8,700 received student aid money, newspaper Helsingborgs Dagblad reports . Casa Bonita files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy
After more than a year closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Lakewood’s Casa Bonita has filed for bankruptcy. Summit Family Restaurants, Casa Bonita’s parent company, filed for Chapter 11 protection in Arizona on April 6. But that doesn’t mean the business is closing for good; the Chapter 11 filing should buy Casa Bonita more time to pay off its debts, which amount to $4.4 million, according to court documents. And it could even continue to operate in the meantime. Court documents show that most of Casa Bonita’s debt is owed to its owner, Summit Family Restaurants, through a capital lease agreement. But after staying closed for the past year, the restaurant is losing around $40,000 a month, court filings state. Now Casa Bonita needs outside investment and a cash flow once again to save itself. “The restaurant is in big trouble,” said Jaime Zender, finance professor with the University of Colorado Leeds School of Business. “As it looks now, without some infusion of cash, they … [Read more...] about Casa Bonita files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy
