Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible filming scrapped as crew fly home from the Middle East
MISSION Impossible’s all about pulling off the unfeasible – but shooting the film during a pandemic is a challenge too far for leading man Tom Cruise and his team. He flew the cast and crew to the Middle East for the latest run of scenes, but has been forced to end filming of the seventh instalment of the franchise after people refused to work any longer. Production staff demanded they were allowed to head back to the UK this weekend before hotel quarantine rules come into effect on Monday. Studio bosses have now had to charter a private jet to bring them home because they were up in arms about not being able to return to their families. A movie insider said: “The whole production has hit yet another issue and there have been revolts among the cast and crew. “For quite a few of them, the prospect of having to quarantine in a hotel back in the UK is a step too far and they’ve demanded to be flown home before the rules change. The studio has had to fund a jet back and the … [Read more...] about Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible filming scrapped as crew fly home from the Middle East

For the most up-to-date news and information about the coronavirus pandemic, visit the WHO website . Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai has a plan for how to spend $200 million earmarked for telehealth in the coronavirus emergency spending bill Congress passed last week. Pai on Monday circulated a proposal for the COVID-19 Telehealth Program , which is designed to help health care providers pay for broadband service and devices they need to provide telehealth services. President Donald Trump on Friday signed into law the $2 trillion Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act . As part of that bill, Congress appropriated $200 million to the FCC to quickly disseminate funding to health care providers to use telehealth services to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. EU wants employers to report pay levels to fix gender gap
BRUSSELS: The European Union executive wants to force employers to be much more open about how much their employees earn to make it easier for women to challenge wage imbalances and close the gender pay gap. Even though the gender pay gap across the 27-nation bloc has been reduced to 14 per cent for people doing exactly the same work, the European Commission wants to eliminate the disparity by imposing specific rules to make pay levels public. “For equal pay, you need transparency. Women must know whether their employers treat them fairly," said EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Since its inception in 1957, the EU has sought to end such gender bias, but progress has been slow over the decades. When it comes to pension rights, reflecting working conditions of the past 30 to 40 years, the gender gap still stands at 30 per cent. Wage conditions and scales in Europe have long been shrouded in secrecy, which has helped extend inequality and proved to be a big hurdle … [Read more...] about EU wants employers to report pay levels to fix gender gap
Planning a celebration? Here’s how to choose the right wine
You’ve closed that important business deal, or earned a promotion. Your loved one has dropped you a hint about the upcoming birthday or anniversary. Your old classmates have asked for a reunion. A celebration is on the cards. Is champagne the de rigueur choice? To help you plan the perfect party, CNA Lifestyle spoke to five wine experts: Kenny Leong, freelance wine journalist; Kelvin Tay, group sommelier mentor of The White Rabbit restaurant; Lim Hwee Peng, wine educator and consultant; Gerald Lu, head sommelier of Praelum Wine Bistro; and Alice Wee, executive director of wine distributor Wine Clique. WHAT KIND OF WINES WOULD YOU RECOMMEND FOR A CELEBRATORY OCCASION? Kelvin Tay (KT): Champagnes have always been the preferred wine for such an occasion. I am fond of the elegant Champage Devaux ‘Cuvée D’, which has a creamy texture, thanks to its high concentration of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. If the guest doesn’t fancy a champagne, I’d recommend white wines from … [Read more...] about Planning a celebration? Here’s how to choose the right wine

How did conservative India come to repeal S377’s ban on consensual gay sex?
INDIA: Some have hailed it as a step towards freedom from discrimination, humiliation and oppression. Certainly, India’s Supreme Court ruling on Section 377 (S377) of the Penal Code has given a new lease of life to millions who had been living under the weight of criminality and in the shadow of fear. READ: India's Supreme Court ends colonial-era ban on gay sex Not only was there an overwhelming response from gay rights activists and the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community, there was also support from the main political parties, like the opposition Congress party. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party did not oppose the judgment, while the Hindu group Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) even supported the ruling, saying that gay sex was not a crime but a moral issue. While S377, which criminalises sexual activities "against the order of nature", remains in force in relation to sex with minors and bestiality, the court ruled last month that its … [Read more...] about How did conservative India come to repeal S377’s ban on consensual gay sex?
Activists fear Biden’s commitment to $15 minimum wage
WASHINGTON — Union activist Terrance Wise recalls being laughed at when he began pushing for a national $15 per hour minimum wage almost a decade ago. Nearly a year into the pandemic, the idea isn’t so funny. The coronavirus has renewed focus on challenges facing hourly employees who have continued working in grocery stores, gas stations and other in-person locations even as much of the workforce has shifted to virtual environments. President Joe Biden has responded by including a provision in the massive pandemic relief bill that would more than double the minimum wage from the current $7.25 to $15 per hour. But the effort is facing an unexpected roadblock: Biden himself. The president has seemingly undermined the push to raise the minimum wage by acknowledging its dim prospects in Congress, where it faces political opposition and procedural hurdles. That’s frustrating to activists like Wise, who worry their victory is being snatched away at the last minute despite an … [Read more...] about Activists fear Biden’s commitment to $15 minimum wage

Courts getting to grips with Civil Code
How much should a man pay his ex-wife for home chores in their divorce settlement? Well, according to a recent court ruling, the sum is 50,000 yuan ($7,700). Last month, Fangshan District People's Court in Beijing ordered a defendant to pay his ex-wife that amount as compensation for the housework she did during their five-year marriage. It was the first verdict the Fangshan court had made with reference to a new legal provision-compensation for unpaid domestic duties-under the Civil Code, which took effect on Jan 1. According to the code, a spouse is entitled to seek compensation in a divorce if he or she bore greater responsibility for raising children, caring for elderly relatives or assisting their partner's work. Moreover, the courts should decide the amount if the two sides are unable to agree on a figure. Media reports on the landmark ruling generated great public interest, especially after a hashtag was created on Sina Weibo, China's Twitter-like service.
