Republic of bandits

Kindly Share This Story: By Yinka Odumakin HOW fast a country can degenerate into a failed republic is presently playing out in a Nigeria that is tottering towards the edge, unhinged in the hands of leaders willing to do this without remorse. The same people who were promoting change six years ago and their counterparts under the umbrella, including their soulmates who were pretending to belong to the clergy are all out now with their daggers drawn to murder the country as fast as they could and unless the enlightened world rises in its self-interest. But it might be too late to save Nigeria from one of the worst cataclysms that the world would have witnessed in recent times. I spoke with the envoy of a superpower country a few days ago with my brother and colleague, Bashorun Akin Osuntokun, and he was tongue-tied at the prospect of his country not being able to turn back one million Nigerians who may storm their border posts if it gets to midnight in the evil … [Read more...] about Republic of bandits

Slavery reparations are a divisive waste of time

Why are we talking about slavery reparations again? Why has this hot-button topic made its way back into the national spotlight? Like most Americans, I am sickened by the specter of slavery and understand the horrors it wreaked on African Americans generations ago. Most of us are painfully cognizant of slavery’s ugly legacy. Under … [Read more...] about Slavery reparations are a divisive waste of time

Arabs, Islam and Nigeria (2)

Kindly Share This Story: *The first part of this piece published last week explained the historical significance of how the force of language brought different Arabs together. By Patrick Dele Cole MOHAMMED had found the two keys of unity – the discipline of the worshippers and their shared allegiance. But the greatest key of all was Mohammed’s power over language – the special oratorical high Arabic. In Mohammed’s hands the tongue was inspired via an angel by God who had chosen Mohammed as his Prophet – Noble Messenger, forging the Arabs into temporary unity. This unity was doomed, for he himself prophesied that the Arabs would break into 73 sects – that is the reality of disunity because the Arabs were, according to Mohammed, “the worst in unbelief and hypocrisy and the least to know the laws of Allah”(You would find similar statements from the Prophets about Jews in the Bible). Arabs also had a raiding ethos, whose predatory skills were … [Read more...] about Arabs, Islam and Nigeria (2)
