SINGAPORE - Once upon a time, Children's Day was a joyous celebration of childhood in Singapore, a day to treasure the innocence and exuberance of little ones. Children's Day on Friday, though, marks eight months of the toughest and strangest year for kids. They have had to grow up suddenly in the shadow of the pandemic, often with parents who were as scared and confused as they were. "I felt kind of trapped in a cage because we were just locked into this house for 12, 13 hours a day, and we could only go outside for a short time," recalls Yaash Kirpalani, 11, of the circuit breaker. Over the months, however, tantrums transformed into habit as kids learnt to wear masks every day, trepidation over Home-Based Learning (HBL) woes evolved into baby steps towards independent learning, and misery over social isolation changed to acceptance as they found new ways to connect. The Straits Times takes a look at how the Covid-19 crisis has shaped childhood in Singapore so far this year. … [Read more...] about A lost or more resilient generation? 6 ways Covid-19 changed childhood in Singapore

Here’s five big things Baton Rouge schools need to change, a new report says
Sito Narcisse, the new Baton Rouge schools superintendent, released a report from outside consultants yesterday that said "time is running out" for parish public schools to avoid "becoming one more large urban school system that is under-resourced and full of dysfunction." Here's a quick list of some the report's biggest observations and recommendations. To read a more in-depth story on the report , click here; to read the report itself, click here: Expand magnet schools: The report calls for more of these specialized schools, which have admissions criteria to enroll. Suggested new schools include a law and public policy high school; a language immersion high school; and an arts high school. The consultants argued that creating more magnet schools could attract students currently in private schools, reversing declines in enrollment and funding. Try to prevent a breakaway school district in St. George: " The District should do everything to keep St. George within the … [Read more...] about Here’s five big things Baton Rouge schools need to change, a new report says

Outriders Demo Patch Is Coming Next Week
The recent demo for upcoming looter-shooter Outriders has been played by over two million people in just a week. Developer People Can Fly isn't resting on its laurels, however, with a significant patch set to arrive at some point next week that fixes a number of issues ahead of the game's full release on April 1 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Stadia. Connectivity issues were a problem when the demo launched last week, so People Can Fly is currently working on the game's backend to ensure the same thing doesn't happen when the full game launches. The developer says that while its infrastructure was ready for the raw number of expected players, the speed with which they were joining exceeded its expectations and the backend systems were unable to scale in time. People Can Fly also reiterated that any changes to the demo need to be carefully balanced with its work towards launching the full game. With that in mind, a patch for the demo is set … [Read more...] about Outriders Demo Patch Is Coming Next Week

Ben Shephard defends himself after laughing at Tipping Point player’s ‘wrong’ answer
Ben Shephard had to explain himself after bursting out laughing at a Tipping Point player's wrong answer. The ITV show presenter misunderstood player Paul's response when he was asked a question about sunscreen. During the quick fire round, Ben asked the player what the 'P' in SPF stood for and which Paul didn't know the answer. He asked to "Pass" the question and move on to the next, but Ben thought it was his answer. The answer he was looking for was "protection", which would have spelt out: "Sun Protection Factor." Ben, 46, tried to hide his laugh before moving on to the next question. However, the presenter felt the need to explain himself, saying: "I only laughed because you said pass. No, it's not pass. Protection." In the end, Paul didn't earn enough from the drop zones to stay in the contest, with his competitor Jill beating him to the final. Jill got a string of questions right - which meant more counters to put into the machine - and watched as the jackpot … [Read more...] about Ben Shephard defends himself after laughing at Tipping Point player’s ‘wrong’ answer

Will AI Replace Coaches and Psychologists?
Empathetic AI? Source: Photo by Owen Beard on Unsplash with Meg Price I recently heard that coaches and helping professions like social workers are considered the last refuge against the ‘fact’ AI. But now AI is learning so fast it can theoretically learn and replace any human task. Even being empathetic ! Research from Harvard University recently suggested coaching can soon be automated. AI comes in many forms, from those little chatbots on websites to Alexa and many other automations that are proactive like the programs in Tesla that the driver talks to. But advances in conversational AI means we can now have conversations with technology that makes us ‘feel’ we are talking to a human that really listens and responds ‘intelligently’. So what? People still want to connect to people! The work of a coach or health care professional requires extensive professional, empathic, psychological, and other skills like human intuition . How could these … [Read more...] about Will AI Replace Coaches and Psychologists?
L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti on Dr. Seuss: ‘There Is No Place for Racist Imagery’
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said that “there is no place for racist imagery” when asked to respond to the ongoing controversy about Dr. Seuss, whom the city has honored in the past. The company that handles Dr. Seuss’s books withdrew six of his books from publication this week over concerns about early caricatures, and the left has been critical of Dr. Seuss for preaching racial tolerance without concern for “structural power imbalances.” Breitbart News asked Garcetti about the issue during a press briefing on Thursday night. Of course, there are images that are blatantly racist that have no place in 2021. And you can’t just look at a book and say, “Hey, 99% of this is great,” and there is a blatantly racist picture of somebody who is presumed to be Chinese or African. So, I know there is this whole back-and-forth about whether people are canceling folks. This is not about canceling. This is about standing up against blatant racism where we see it, and just making sure … [Read more...] about L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti on Dr. Seuss: ‘There Is No Place for Racist Imagery’
