Home Affairs to have AU$75 million ‘simple’ visa system ready by late 2021
The federal government has this week gone to market to find a provider to help build its new permissions capability architecture, which it expects to use for delivering Commonwealth digital services that require permissions. While the plan for the new platform is for it to be used across a range of government applications, the request for tender (RFT) is focusing on the first use case: Visas. "The Department needs to be able to facilitate international travel and the gradual reopening of our borders, while also ensuring that it has the necessary defensive layers to safeguard against new infections being introduced through the travelling public," the RFT says. Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible filming scrapped as crew fly home from the Middle East
MISSION Impossible’s all about pulling off the unfeasible – but shooting the film during a pandemic is a challenge too far for leading man Tom Cruise and his team. He flew the cast and crew to the Middle East for the latest run of scenes, but has been forced to end filming of the seventh instalment of the franchise after people refused to work any longer. Production staff demanded they were allowed to head back to the UK this weekend before hotel quarantine rules come into effect on Monday. Studio bosses have now had to charter a private jet to bring them home because they were up in arms about not being able to return to their families. A movie insider said: “The whole production has hit yet another issue and there have been revolts among the cast and crew. “For quite a few of them, the prospect of having to quarantine in a hotel back in the UK is a step too far and they’ve demanded to be flown home before the rules change. The studio has had to fund a jet back and the … [Read more...] about Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible filming scrapped as crew fly home from the Middle East
Gardening couple transform Wairarapa chicken farm into a haven for birds
Todd Kaspers This breathtaking property was once a poultry farm, but is now home to many other feathered friends, hence it's name, which means bird garden. You can create something beautiful in all conditions,” says Maria Fairburn, who alongside her husband Miles has developed not only a garden of beautiful vistas, but also a haven for a variety of birds. Now enjoying retirement, the Fairburns have more time to reflect. Both agree this is the “best phase” of their gardening journey. Having achieved their ultimate goal – to transform sloping, south-facing drought-prone paddocks on the side of a hill into a garden of beautiful vistas offering a safe home for winged visitors – it’s now a time of contemplation and satisfaction in knowing that they have indeed brought the birds back. It’s been a journey of three distinct chapters, a fair amount of twists and turns, and as with most good stories, not without a few dramas. ‘Love Island’ To Return To ITV This Summer
ITV has confirmed that hit entertainment show Love Island will be restored to its summer schedule after last year’s sun-soaked dating format was derailed by the coronavirus pandemic. ITV’s content chief Kevin Lygo said Love Island will be back after it has been off-air for around a year. The last season was a winter version, filmed in South Africa by ITV Studios for ITV2. His confirmation follows ITV CEO Carolyn McCall saying last month that this year’s season was in the balance as Covid-19 continues to rampage across Europe. “We will want to put Love Island on air because it’s been off air for a little while [after] we didn’t do it last summer. We’re looking at all our options at the moment because the pandemic makes that hard,” she told the BBC. The Daily Mirror reported this week that the island of Jersey has been identified as a back-up for the Love Island’s traditional home in Mallorca, should international travel be restricted when filming needs to … [Read more...] about ‘Love Island’ To Return To ITV This Summer
Clash erupts during Israel operation in Gaza, six dead
GAZA CITY, Palestinian Territories: An exchange of fire erupted during an Israeli military operation in the Gaza Strip on Sunday (Nov 11), leaving six Palestinians dead, officials said, while potentially dashing hopes that a recent agreement would restore calm. As tensions rose following the clash, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said he would cut short his trip to Paris, where he had been attending World War I commemorations, and return home. Fawzi Barhoum, a spokesman for Hamas, the Islamist movement that runs the blockaded Gaza Strip, denounced a "cowardly Israeli attack." After the clash erupted, sirens were reported in southern Israel indicating possible rocket fire from the Gaza Strip. Two launches from Gaza toward Israel were confirmed and both were intercepted by Israeli missile defences, the army said. Details were still emerging of the incident that Palestinian officials said occurred east of Khan Yunis in the southern Gaza Strip. Gaza's … [Read more...] about Clash erupts during Israel operation in Gaza, six dead
India vs England: Joe Root’s side bowled out for 205 on another disappointing day with the bat
England endured another disappointing outing with the bat in India, being bowled out for 205 on day one of the fourth Test in Ahmedabad, before a James Anderson strike with the ball briefly lifted spirits late on. The visitors were again undone by Axar Patel (4-68), as the left-arm spinner took his wicket tally to 22 for his three maiden Test appearances in the series, and this coming on a surface that didn't turn as much as the one used for the two-day third Test at the Narendra Modi Stadium last week. Ben Stokes (55) scored a 24th Test half-century, while Dan Lawrence (46), recalled to the side to strengthen the batting, did just that with some useful runs from No 7 in the order, but England never threatened to post a considerable first-innings score despite again having first use of the pitch after winning the toss. Fourth Test scorecard: India vs England Day One in Ahmedabad - as it happened Lawrence, along with Dom Bess, was one of two changes to the … [Read more...] about India vs England: Joe Root’s side bowled out for 205 on another disappointing day with the bat
