As he laid his bed

Kindly Share This Story: By Yetunde Arebi Toyin, at barely 16, was pregnant and proudly announcing her great news to all who cared to listen.  Tall, dark, well bosomed with all the right womanly curves, appeared to have grown up before her time when I met her and her family. We had just moved to the area and her mother ran the neighbourhood retail shop right in front of their house. One could not but notice the family. Her mother, a very polite, slightly heavy figured woman made it her duty to exchange pleasantries with all the neighbours as they drove or walked past their shop. All the children took after their mother, tall, dark complexioned and blessed with her good looks. However, Toyin’s father, though dark skinned too, was the opposite of his household. Short, smallish, with a monstrous temper. He went off the handle often and ‘does not send’ when his temper possesses him. He does not care for the neighbours’ approval of his actions and many decent people … [Read more...] about As he laid his bed

Award-winning journalist Jehan Casinader on covering Christchurch terror attack

Sunday reporter and Sri Lankan Kiwi Jehan Casinader has spent his career telling stories usually relegated to the margins by mainstream media. He shares with Katie Kenny why covering the Christchurch terror attack is personal, and why, even though he's tired, "now is not the time for a cup of tea and a lie down". Sunday 's Jehan Casinader was about to leave TVNZ's office for the day when his boss asked if he'd heard about the shooting in Christchurch. "No," Casinader replied. He had just finished editing a story about the Pike River mine explosion. It had been a long week. But after hearing several people had been killed at a mosque, Casinader didn't waste time in booking flights. Then a contact sent him a link to what appeared to be a video of the massacre. Standing in the middle of the newsroom with his arm outstretched, the 29-year-old showed his editors the first few minutes of the livestream. As they watched the small screen resting on his palm, he noticed his hands … [Read more...] about Award-winning journalist Jehan Casinader on covering Christchurch terror attack

She lost her sight and her hearing but she never lost hope and optimism

SINGAPORE - Tan Siew Ling has an uncanny ability to remember dates, reeling off with conviction days and months of events that she considers important. She reckons it is because she is blind. Referring to books or notes to jolt the memory is not an easy option. "I cannot just pick up something and read, I need someone to read it for me and I don't have people around to help me all that often so I have to remember things," she says. The 33-year-old lost her sight when she was 11. Her life was made even more difficult when she also lost her hearing two years ago. Her optic and hearing nerves were damaged by tumours in the brain because of a genetic disorder known as Neurofibromatosis Type 2. Thankfully, she refuses to let her condition dampen her optimism, and is determined to take it on the chin. She works as an executive assistant in the CEO office at SG Enable, an agency dedicated to enabling people with disabilities. We are talking with the help of an interpreter … [Read more...] about She lost her sight and her hearing but she never lost hope and optimism

Lose the Virus, Keep the Mask

I grew up in South Korea, where mask-wearing was an accepted norm. Individuals would don face coverings for a myriad of reasons: when they were feeling sick; when they didn’t have enough time to put on makeup; when the air was so cold it chapped their skin; and when high-speed winds kicked up dense dust storms in the deserts of China and Mongolia that wrought havoc on neighboring countries. "I grew up in South Korea, where mask-wearing was an accepted norm." Source: Angelina Bambina/Shutterstock When I immigrated to the United States, I brought a cotton mask with me, and on a crisp fall day, I decided to wear it to my elementary school. The mask immediately drew the attention of my concerned classmates and teacher, who asked if I was feeling OK. I stopped wearing it. Back then, I never would have expected that mask-wearing was to become mandatory. Then, at the beginning of the pandemic, industrious home sewers churned out fabric masks with rapid alacrity. Then … [Read more...] about Lose the Virus, Keep the Mask
